Anders as by die romanse, waar daar gewoonlik naas die twee hoofkarakters, dalk ’n antagonis betrokke is en hoogtens ’n paar randkarakters, leen die spanningsverhaal of krimi, hom uitstekend daartoe om ’n uitgebreide karakteraanbieding te hê. Bloedsomer illustreer hierdie stelling deur en deur. Petunia is ’n nuweling op Mooibaai, en saam met JP maak hulle die kern uit van die wetstoepassing op die dorp. Maar dan is daar ’n breë spektrum van rolspelers, wat insluit die vooraanstaande Hiemstra gesin, hulle werknemers, bendes, selfs Russiese seëlui.
Die verhaal is goed geposisioneer in ’n relevante tydsgees, in die nadraai van die pandemie, die bendeaktiwiteite in die Suid-Kaap, die altyd toenemende haweloses, en die oorlog in Oekraïne. Geestesgesondheid kom ook onder die loep, met ’n belangrike karakter wat manifesteer met dissosiatiewe identiteitsversteuring.
Die komplot is nogal bisarre, maar uiters boeiend. Die gestroopte taalgebruik van die skrywer maak dit maklik om bladsy na bladsy byna moeiteloos te verslind. Stellings soos: “Voorheen was daar ’n druptoestel, maar haar ma se are het onder die veloppervlak verdwyn en na binne gevlug. Amper soos haar teenwoordigheid wat nou êrens agter haar dowwe oë skuil.” (p. 228 van die e-boek), onderstreep die feit dat Sidney Gilroy ’n puik skrywer is, een wat ek nou eers ontdek het.
Die afloop van die krisisgebeure, en spesifiek die optredes van Petunia en JP, wou vir my onrealisties voorkom, totdat ek besef het dat mens neig om te meet aan televisie en film, waar swat-spanne soos vanuit die niet verskyn en situasies ontlont. Trouens, Petunia herinner haarself dat daar geen hulp op Mooibaai of omstreke beskikbaar is nie.
As ’n krimi jou koppie tee is, kan jy gerus belê in hierdie een.

In the politics of the day where ‘onshoring’ , trade barriers and tariffs to limit free trade are being erected this is most important work.
The book is written in a riveting and easy and understandable style , where I could not wait to turn to the next page and chapter.

I could say this is one of the most exciting stories I have read .
