Naked Portrait
‘Hypnotic and propulsive’ - The Sunday Times‘Thrilling’ - The TLS‘Compulsive’ - The ObserverIn Naked Portrait Rose Boyt explores her complicated relationship with her beloved father, Lucian Freud, drawing on a diary she kept while sitting for him and which she found five years after his death.Nothing had been discussed, I just assumed I would be naked. I got undressed and asked him what he would like me to do. He said it was up to me.Enthralled by his genius, Rose remembered as uncontentious and amusing all the extraordinary stories he told her to keep her entertained in the studio, but the shock of the truth is profound when she looks back. What emerges is her compassion and love not just for herself as a vulnerable young woman but for the man himself, in all his brilliant complexity.‘Packed to the rafters with wisdom and insight, this immersive account of being the child of a genius is, itself, a work of art’ - Frances Wilson, The Telegraph ‘Books of the Year’‘Beyond the father–daughter dynamic is an evocative tale of coming of age in London in the 1980s’ - Hettie Judah, The Times Literary Supplement‘The unexpected miracle of the book is its emotional complexity’ - Claire Dederer, The Guardian

Racket
THE NO. 1 BESTSELLERWINNER OF THE WILLIAM HILL SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD 2024'As elegant and powerful as a Federer backhand ... It’s Kitchen Confidential for tennis.' Ed Caesar'Well worth a read if you want the inside track on life on the lower rungs of the tennis circuit. Warts and all.' Judy Murray----When Conor Niland was 16, he was chosen to hit with Serena Williams at Nick Bollettieri's famed tennis academy. Conor, the Irish junior number one, was feeling a bit homesick. Serena, also 16, already owned her own house beside the academy.Conor Niland knows what it's like when Roger Federer walks into the dressing room ('Ciao, bonjour, hello!'), and he has had the exquisitely terrible experience of facing Novak Djokovic in the world's biggest tennis stadium - while suffering from food poisoning. But he never reached the very top.The Racket is the story of pro tennis's 99%: the players who roam the globe in hope of climbing the rankings and squeaking into the Grand Slam tournaments. It brings us into a world where a few dozen super-rich players - travelling with coaches and physios - share a stage with lonely touring pros whose earnings barely cover their expenses. Painting a vivid picture of the social dynamics on tour, the economics of the game, and the shadows cast by gambling and doping, The Racket is a witty and revealing underdog's memoir and a unique look inside a fascinating hidden world.----'Conor Niland may only have managed a career-high ranking of 129 – only? that is some achievement in itself! – but The Racket, his account of how he managed this, is up there with the best half-dozen books on tennis ever written.' More Everything Forever
'Disconcerting . . . a disturbing and important book' NEW SCIENTIST 'Smart and wonderfully readable' NEW YORK TIMES The bad science and sinister ideas behind Silicon Valley's foolish obsession with immortality, AI paradise and limitless growth. Tech billionaires have decided that they should determine our futures for us. According to Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Sam Altman and more, the only good future for humanity is one powered by technology: trillions of humans living in space, functionally immortal, served by superintelligent AIs. In More Everything Forever, scientist and writer Adam Becker investigates these wildly implausible and often profoundly immoral visions of tomorrow to reveal why, in reality, there is no good evidence that they will, or should, come to pass. The giants of Silicon Valley claim that their ideas are based on science, but the truth is darker: they come from a jumbled mix of shallow futurism and racist pseudoscience. And behind these fanciful visions of space colonies and digital immortality is a cynical power grab, at the expense of essential work spent on solving real problems like the climate crisis. More Everything Forever exposes the powerful myths that dominate Silicon Valley, challenging us to see how foolish, and dangerous, these visions of the future are.

These profiles, reviews, remembrances, tributes and critical essays, as well as several conversations with friends and idols, bring to life Nelson’s passion for dialogue and dissent. The range of subjects is wide – from Prince to Carolee Schneemann to Kara Walker to Bjork – but certain themes recur: intergenerational exchange; love and friendship; feminist and queer issues, especially as they shift over time; subversion, transgression and perversity; and the fruits and follies of a life spent devoted to making. The collection is a portrait of a time, an anarchic party rich with wild guests, a window into Nelson’s own development as a writer, and a testament to the profound sustenance offered by art and artists.‘Maggie Nelson is one of the most unique voices in non-fiction: enquiring, political, lyrically dazzling, empathetic’ Sinéad Gleeson

End of War
After D-Day in 1944 many British troops believed the war would be over by Christmas. The German Army in Normandy had been destroyed, but by Christmas the Allies were still fighting through Holland, whilst the Germans had reorganised and were fighting back.Ken Tout, using his own experiences on the frontline and interviews with many veterans, recounts how the last gasps of the German Army saw some of the fiercest and most fanatical fighting of the whole war. Major offensives include Hitler’s last desperate attempt to reverse the tide of war in the Battle of the Bulge and the Western Allies’ epic struggle to cross the Rhine. Also explored are the lesser known (but no less important) battles for the Hochwald and Reichwald, and the extraordinary journey of the Polish 1st Armoured Division from defeat and exile to final victory. This last year of war is filled with stories from the tragedy of whole groups of men being frozen to death in battle areas to the triumph of logistics, ingenuity, and bravery. Soldiers, who had lived for so long under the horrors of war that as they neared the end their desperate desire to survive grew ever stronger, speak of how these last battles took their toll on a wearied army.Fighting continued up to VE Day in May and some units were in action for days longer as confusion reigned about the enemy surrender. Even after the fighting had finished, the war was not over for these men who had to round up and guard German prisoners of war, and watch over thousands of displaced people. As the world reminds us today, war does not necessarily end when a ceasefire is declared.

Mercedes-Benz C 111
A comprehensive, insider history of the C 111, the most famous Mercedes never produced. In March 1969, the news that Daimler-Benz was developing a Wankel rotary-engine sports car hit like a bomb. Six months later, the C 111, with its fascinating design and brilliant driving performance, was the undisputed star of the Frankfurt International Motor Show. The new super sports car was immediately regarded as a worthy successor to the legendary 300 SL. Despite tremendous interest, Mercedes never put the vehicle into full production. Various C 111s appeared over the next decade, featuring different engines, tweaked aerodynamics, and other modern developments. Mercedes used the platform to chase records and test new technologies. Based on access to Mercedes-Benz past and current personnel and the extensive holdings of the Mercedes-Benz Group Archives, this is an authoritative history of the C 111 program. Highlights of this book include: • 520 pages that include more than 1,100 photos and diagrams, many of which have never left the Mercedes archives until now. • Features previously unpublished info and interviews with the people behind the car. • Documents the development of the C 111 in great detail and in depth for the first time. • Comprehensive documentation of the Vision One-Eleven show car. Inspired by the C 111 and unveiled in June 2023, it reinterprets the brand icon of the 1970s with breathtaking design and innovative drive technology. This authoritative history was made possible through the support of Mercedes-Benz Classic, which granted access to the Mercedes-Benz Group Archives, the C 111 cars in the company's collection, and contemporary witnesses who formed the development in the 1960s and 1970s.

The latest volume in The Met’s How to Read series, focusing on the rich and varied textiles of Africa through forty exemplars from the nineteenth century to the present day Historically, handwoven cloth and clothing made across the African continent have been labor-intensive creations deeply embedded in local and regional value systems. These fabrics, frequently adapted to communal and individual needs, serve to clothe the body, divide architectural space, protect physical = and spiritual well-being, and convey wealth and authority. This volume in The Met’s acclaimed How to Read series features forty masterworks of African fiber arts, from a dynamic nineteenth-century interior hanging from Sierra Leone to a dreamlike textile canvas by a contemporary Malagasy artist. Authors Christine Giuntini and Jenny Peruski explore the complex histories of production, consumption, and exchange attached to these extraordinary works; contextualize long-standing and recently embraced techniques and materials; and offer readers new ways to appreciate Africa’s diverse textile traditions. Decision Leadership
A fresh, research-driven playbook for how successful leaders can maximize the potential of others When we think of leaders, we often imagine lone, inspirational figures lauded for their behaviors, attributes, and personal decisions—a perception that is reinforced by many leadership books. However, this approach ignores the expectations of modern work cultures centered on equity and inclusion, where a leader’s true mission is to empower others. Applying decades of behavioral science research, Don A. Moore and Max H. Bazerman offer a passionate corrective to this view, casting today’s organizations as decision factories in which effective leaders are decision architects, enabling those around them to make wise, ethical choices consistent with their own interests and the organization’s highest values. As a result, a leader’s impact grows because it ripples out instead of relying on one individual to play the part of heroic figure. Filled with real-life stories and examples of the structures, incentives, and systems that successful leaders have used, this playbook equips each of us to facilitate wise decisions.

Children of the Dead
The magnum opus of 2004 Nobel laureate Elfriede Jelinek—a spectral journey through the catastrophic history embedded in the landscape of Austria “The surface of [Jelinek’s] prose cracks and bursts . . . fissured by phantasmagorical description, gallows humor, multilingual puns, and scouring sarcasm. . . . Jelinek’s novel is finally . . . a furious accumulation of lost moments and possible outcomes, an enormous, spectral kaleidoscope erected before the unfathomable.”—Dustin Illingworth, Washington Post The Alpenrose is a mountain resort nestled in Austria’s scenic landscape among historic churches and castles. It is a vacation idyll that attracts tourists from all over Europe. It is also a mass burial site. Amid the snow-topped peaks and panoramic vistas, ghosts haunt the forest: Edgar Gstranz, a young skier who died in a car crash; Gudrun Bichler, a philosophy student who committed suicide in her bathtub; and Karin Frenzel, a widow who (perhaps) died in a bus accident. As the three slip in and out of the hotel, engaging unsuspecting tourists and seeking a way to return to life, the soil begins to crack under their feet as the dead of the Holocaust awaken: zombies determined to exact their revenge. Scrupulously rendered for the first time in English by Gitta Honegger, The Children of the Dead takes readers on a mind-bending ride through time, space, and memory. Concocted from experimental theater, splatter film, Gothic literature, philosophy, religion, and more, Jelinek’s phantasmagorical masterwork is a fierce confrontation with our fraught legacies in the name of the innocent dead.

NATO
A wide-ranging new history of NATO, from its origins to the present day—published for the alliance’s seventy-fifth anniversary For seven decades, NATO’s stated aim has been the achievement of world peace—but playing great power politics always involves conflict. Russia’s war on Ukraine and on Europe’s security order puts the alliance under threat, but also demonstrates why transatlantic cooperation is so necessary. But how did NATO get to where it is today, and what does its future hold? In this incisive new account, Sten Rynning traces the full history of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation from its origins to the present. Across its seventy-five years, NATO has navigated the twists and turns of Cold War diplomacy and nuclear deterrence, and has grown its membership. The alliance has become a guarantor of peace, but Rynning explores how its complex inner workings alongside Russian and Chinese opposition are now shaping its direction. At a time of strategic competition and geopolitical upheaval, Rynning offers us a clear-sighted account of the alliance’s intriguing history—and asks what its ambitions might be for the future.

James Baldwin
An intimate portrait of James Baldwin, offering a new understanding of his life and works as seen through his close relationships and private life“Baldwin authority Zaborowska’s gracefully impassioned biography. . . . A creatively conceived appreciation for a decorated life and its far-flung influences on race, queer culture, and art.”—Kirkus Reviews James Baldwin (1924–1987) was a pivotal figure of the twentieth century, an influential author, intellectual, and activist who led a celebrated public life—and whose words and image and persona remain current in our culture. Baldwin’s many incarnations—“son of Harlem,” “Black icon,” “great twentieth-century writer,” “race man,” “prophet,” “witness”—have reemerged in the digital age as Baldwin’s work becomes a touchstone for a new generation. It is the private, vulnerable, and messier Baldwin—the man behind the prophet and the online meme—who is the focus of this book. Magdalena J. Zaborowska draws on Baldwin’s archives and material legacy—from his unpublished papers to his books to his house in France—to offer a fresh look at the writer’s understated and obscured private life. Taking a cue from Baldwin’s own love of the blues, Zaborowska presents his biography as a series of tracks on a vinyl record, introducing, developing, and remixing the themes and relationships from his life. She recounts episodes from Baldwin’s troubled childhood, his struggles with sexuality and gender, his intimate relationships, and the overlooked influence of women, Jews, and queers on his writing. This Life Album revolves around Baldwin’s development of a unique worldview, “Black queer humanism,” premised on African diaspora aesthetics, resilience, joy, community, internationalism, activism, and justice.
