Wonderful book to introduce relatable topics through Afrikaans poetry.

This a thick, hardcover book that will be helpful for home use as well as in schools. Perfectly pitched, original, good quality poems for 1-6 year olds, as it explores subjects and objects that they are becoming aware of in themselves and the world around them. So relatable! My 2 year old has been asking for this book almost every night at "storietyd" since we got it a month ago. The poems are by a wide variety of poets, written, it seems, specifically for this publications. Some are by popular authors like Jaco Jacobs and Carina Stander. Furthermore, the illustrations are done in a very wide variety of artistic styles, making this book stimulating on a number of levels.

Another excellent book by Deon Meyer. Having read the Afrikaans original first there were no great surprises. However, I enjoyed it even more the second time around. I hope it is not a spoiler to say that do not expect to find out what happened to Sandra Steenberg in the cliff hanger finale of Dark Flood. The only problem with Deon Meyer's novels is the length of time one has to wait until the next one.

A Way of Being Free

Waar lê die grens tussen bewondering en teistering?

Indien jy, soos ekself, gewonder het oor die titel van Zelda Bezuidenhout se jeugroman, Quinn se jaar van kwik, lê die antwoord in Quinn se voormalige chemie-onderwyser se filosofie: “Suksesvolle mense is soos kwik. Hulle kan oral wees en alles doen, maar laat nie toe dat hulle omwêreld aan hulle afsmeer nie.” (p.26) Dit is Quinn se matriekjaar. Sy is verban, so voel dit vir haar, na Excellentia, ’n sogenaamde koesterskool in Suid-Afrika, een met die voorkoms en tradisies wat grens aan Victoriaans. Gewapen met die vaste voorneme om by niks en niemand betrokke te raak nie.
Die eerste gelade hoofstuk eindig op ’n dramatiese wyse. Moet egter nie ’n riller verwag nie. Eerder die uitstekende en sensitiewe hantering van die moeilike onderwerp van seksuele teistering. Haar voornemens om kwik te wees byt spoedig in die stof wanneer Quinn nie kan slaag om afstand te behou wanneer sy bewus raak van die Brothers nie. Vir geslagte, in die sogenaamde naam van tradisie, word meisies geteister en verneder deur Punteskrums, Sleutelgat en Sambok.
Sinvolle stof tot nadenke is volop. Soos Quinn se besinning oor die verskil tussen flankeer en intimideer, tussen bewondering en teistering. (p.217) Jongmense kan met groot vrug gaan kers opsteek hier, dalk ook soos Quinn ’n eureka-oomblik ervaar wat hierdie moeilike begrippe aanbetref.
Die positiewe kant van die verhaal fokus op vriendskap en waagmoed, met ’n lekker skeut nostalgie bygemeng. Suzi Quatro, die ou bakkie sonder ’n kap, kassette wat uitryg, Manfred man se Mighty Quinn, I will survive …
Die fisiese boek het my nogal herinner aan An-Mari do Carmo se Toe als groen was. Nie alleen het Lapa Uitgewers weer geslaag om ’n pragtige produk daar te stel met gekleurde bladsyrante nie, maar dit hanteer ook gewigte onderwerpe wat uiters aktueel is. Opvoeding deur stories, sonder preke en lesings.
Quinn se jaar van kwik is een van die naaswenners in die Lapa Jeugromankompetisie van 2023, en Zelda Bezuidenhout verdien beslis hierdie sukses.

I was truly blown away by this book. The narrative is gripping, the characters are engaging, and there is a beautiful subtlety to each facet of the plot that I truly enjoyed discovering. Would definitely recommend!
