The twenty essays presented in this volume provide a cross section of the latest and most significant research being done in the field of naval history. Written by both established scholars and newer names in the discipline here and abroad, they bring important new interpretations and information to their subjects. Such a collection clearly demonstrates that the discipline of naval history now goes far beyond the traditional view that for decades concentrated almost exclusively on battles, tactics, and strategy. From archaeological findings of an ancient sea port on the coast of Spain, to pension files as a new source of important historical information, to the continuing and highly charged debate over the 1964 incident in the Tonkin Gulf, the vast array of subjects covered expose the reader to ideas that will continue to be investigated by naval historians in the years ahead. Scholars and nonscholars alike will appreciate the tremondous breadth and increasingly high quality of research represented in this collection, chosen from the 65 papers delivered in Annapolis two years ago at the Eighth Naval History Symposium, the premier conference of its type in the world.
