The Real SparkySparky the Dragon Bus, JGA 199N, was a project in Glasgow offering play opportunities to disabled children and their families. It was a unique Playbus containing many special features, such as a chairlift from the lower deck, allowing users an access to the upper deck. At the rear was an emergency exit slide. The slide started from the top deck with a large, soft mat on the ground to ensure safe landing. Sparky encouraged many children to come along to the play scheme where they played alongside children of all abilities. Sparky the Dragon Bus was quickly recognised for its valuable service, and even received a royal visit from Princess Anne.

Sue is a teacher and loves telling, and sharing stories with children. ; When her children were little, they attended a Playbus, this was a play project based on a double-decker bus. They had many adventures and lots of fun on the bus. The story books have links to this involvement as well as adventures from her teaching career. ; Following the first Jay-Jay story based on the Playbus her daughter suggested she should write about some of the fun things they did with the bus. Her daughter remembered how their bus would join in with bus rallies, where lots of different Playbus projects would meet and share ideas. ; At one rally they met Sparky the Dragon bus which was a real bus which operated in Glasgow, Scotland. The bus supported children with disabilities and even had a stairlift to enable users to access the top deck of the bus. ; The bus was the inspiration for the story of a little girl, who having designed Sparky’s beautiful exterior paintwork, finds she can join in even with her wheelchair disability. The message of Sparky was based on inclusion and now, with the stairlift she can climb to the top deck of the bus and join in. The patron of the original Playbus project was The Princess Royal, Princess Anne, who visited the bus.
