Revisiting The Shining felt like returning to an old friend, one who is unsettling, unforgettable, and impossible to look away from. Stephen King’s mastery of atmosphere, tension, and flawed humanity is on full display in this slow building but deeply rewarding horror classic.

The story follows the Torrance family as Jack, a struggling writer battling alcoholism, accepts a winter caretaker job at the isolated Overlook Hotel. Die verhaal van Cara, wat drie oorloë oorleef het

Ek het vroeërjare die slegte gebruik gehad om boeke te koop en netjies en ongelees in my rak te bêre. Daarom dat ek nie onmiddellik die kloutjie by die oortjie gekry het toe ek Cara, die nuutste roman deur Helena Hugo, begin het nie. Dit was eers die terugflitse wat die skrywer vernuftig in die storielyn verweef het, wat my laat besef het dat Cara se storie die afsluiting is van ’n reeks wat in 2016 afgeskop het met Mispa, gevolg deur Elim en Bet-El. Dit sal natuurlik sinvol wees om die hele reeks in volgorde te lees, maar ek kon wel genoeg agterkom van die voorgeskiedenis om te verstaan wat vir Cara gebring het by hierdie punt in haar lewe, ’n kinderlose weduwee van vier en vyftig.
Na baie jare in Beiere, waar sy en haar man saam met die Sinti-sigeuners rondgetoer het, verloor sy haar hele gesin in een nag wanneer die SS toeslaan op hulle kamp. Wanneer sy uiteindelik terugkeer na haar familie in Kimberley, kom sy met deels-onverwerkte trauma en stryd om te vergeet en ander, ook haarself, te vergewe.
Die verhaal gee goeie insig in die oorloë, waarvan Cara drie oorleef het. Moenie ’n vinnige lees verwag nie. Die komplekse stel karakters en gebeure wat verskeie families insluit, verg konsentrasie. Terwyl dit historiese fiksie is, is dit ook geskryf vanuit ’n geestelike perspektief, daarom dat dit tuishoort by Lux Verbi, die geestelike druknaam van NB-Uitgewers. Die slotwoord deur die skrywer moet jy beslis ook lees om vir Cara na behore te groet.

Midde die grysaamheid van oorlog bloei die liefde

Eleanor Campbell is ’n vrywillige verpleegster aan die gevegsfront tydens die Boereoorlog. Haar pa en broer, albei mediese dokters van Skotse afkoms, beman ’n ambulans met beperkte voorrade en heeltemal te veel beseerdes. Die werklikheid van oorlog daag haar geloof spoedig uit: “Waar was die Here vandag? Die God van genade tot wie hulle altyd bid? Hoe kan hy toelaat dat mense sulke wrede dinge aan mekaar doen?” (p.69)
Die Eed van Hippokrates verplig die twee vrywillige Skotse dokters, saam met hulle gesin, om Boer én Brit te versorg. Dit plaas die gesin in die spervuur. “... ons is net van daardie mense in die middel, in die niemandsland, soos Rory dit noem, dié wat tussen twee vure hang.” (p.225)
Dit is egter die teenwoordigheid van ’n ander stel vrywilligers, soldate uit Rusland wat hier aan die kant van die Boere kom veg, wat ’n verdere dimensie aan die storielyn verleen. Dit sorg ook vir ’n tere liefdesverhaal met vele uitdagings. Malene Breytenbach plaas die leser midde in die oorlog met al die ontbering, dood en beserings, maar sy slaag daarin om die emosies van die rolspelers, die fokus te maak.
Dit is nie die eerste maal wat hierdie skrywer oor die Boereoorlog skryf nie. Sy het duidelik genoeg kennis om die onderwerp en karakters oortuigend en boeiend aan te bied. Dink byvoorbeeld aan Verskeurde hart en Liefde en oorlog. Verpleging is ook nie ’n vreemde tema vir haar nie.
Die Vrywilligers is ’n publikasie van Luca, die geestelike druknaam van Lapa Uitgewers.

A haunting, thought provoking, beautifully written novel.

Wild Dark Shore crept under my skin and stayed there. I wasn’t sure what I was getting into at first. The opening is slow and atmospheric, almost more mood than plot, but before I realised it I was completely invested in this strange, remote sub-Antarctic island and the people trying to survive on it. The island feels alive. It’s harsh and beautiful and unpredictable, and McConaghy writes it with such reverence that it becomes a character in its own right.

The story follows Dominic Salt and his three children, who have lived in isolation for eight years. When a woman’s body washes ashore, everything begins to unravel. The mystery unfolds through multiple perspectives, and I loved the way each voice added another piece to the puzzle. The children especially stole my heart. They’re flawed and fierce and far more capable than they should have to be.

The themes are heavy. Climate grief, motherhood, loneliness, the ethics of bringing new life into a burning world. Yet the writing is so beautiful that even the bleakest moments feel meaningful. My only quibble is the pacing, which can be stop start, but the emotional payoff is worth it.
