Die titel van Riette Rust se boek het my van die eerste oogopslag af met die vraag gelaat: hoe bring jy selfdood en ’n geskenk by mekaar uit? Haar besoek aan ’n medium van Milnerton gee vir ons die eerste leidraad: “He wants you to know that he loves you very much, he admires you too. His death is a gift to you and the children.” (p. 127)
Nadat die skrywer ’n pad moes loop deur trauma, rou, berading, selfs psigiatriese hulp, kon sy uiteindelik getuig van posttraumatiese groei, waaraan sy ’n hele hoofstuk (Hst 13) wy. Sy kon terugskouend, insien hoe JD se selfdood inderdaad ’n “geskenk” kon wees. Hulle is finansieel beter agtergelaat en sy siekte sou nie vir hulle ’n las wees nie.
Met eerlikheid en gestroopheid takel die skrywer die moeilike onderwerpe – wat nie as ’n verrassing kom nie, gegewe die feit dat Riette Rust ’n gesoute en bekroonde joernalis is. Sy deins nie terug om in skokkende detail die gebeure rondom JD se dood neer te pen nie, ook nie die moeilike pad wat daarna gevolg het nie.
Meer as twee bladsye word afgestaan aan Bronne en hulplyne, wat dui daarop dat sy nie bloot die gebeure self beleef het nie, maar ook deeglik nagevors het, ten einde vir die leser werkbare riglyne neer te pen oor onder andere die stadiums van rou, wat jy moet en nié moet sê nie, oor hoe jy sulke trauma oorleef en uiteindelik daardeur kan groei.
Mens kan nie anders as om respek te hê vir hierdie vrou nie, hoewel ek nie al haar oortuigings deel nie. Haar verhaal wys op ’n stuk waarheid in Carl Jung se uitspraak wat sy aanhaal: “Ek is nie wat met my gebeur nie, ek is wat ek kies om te word.” (p. 210). Terwyl sy baie maklik ook in depressie kon bly wroeg het, het sy gekies om heel aan die ander kant uit te kom, om selfs weer liefde in haar lewe toe te laat.
