This text covers one-, two- and three-dimensional problems. The book begins with the description of stress and strain, the Hooke's Law, and the treatmentof one-dimensional thermal stress problems in bars. An extensive exposition of thermal stresses in beams, including thin-walled beams and beams on an elastic foundation, is then presented. After the exposition of the theory of heat conduction, the basic equations of thermoelasticity are introduced in various coordinate systems. Plane thermoelastic problems are treated extensively. Problems pertaining to circular cylinders and to spherical bodies are presented in separate chapters. Thermal stresses in plates, both rectangular and circular, are treated in detail. The thermally induced instability of a beam column and a plate is described. The last chapter is devoted to the Principle of Energy Conservation, the Second Law of Thermodynamics, and to variational theorems. While this is primarily a textbook for senior undergraduates and first year graduates, it should also satisfy the needs of practicing scientists and engineers.
