ENGLISH DESCRIPTION A masterpiece of Latin American narrative, based on the Chamula uprising between 1867 and 1870 in San Cristóbal, Chiapas, where the figure of an indigenous Christ emerged. Oficio de tinieblas, Rosario Castellanos delves into history and its protagonists to understand the circumstances that led a people to a harrowing event, recreating it in a Mexico closer in time: that of agrarian reform during the government of Lázaro Cárdenas. An extraordinary narrative that portrays with stark realism the oppression of the indigenous world, barely surviving poverty while facing contempt and dispossession of their lands by the Ladino whites.
