Duality in Vector Optimization
Thecontinuousandincreasinginterestconcerningvectoroptimizationperc- tible in the research community, where contributions dealing with the theory of duality abound lately, constitutes the main motivation that led to writing this book. Decisive was also the research experience of the authors in this ?eld, materialized in a number of works published within the last decade. The need for a book on duality in vector optimization comes from the fact that despite the large amount of papers in journals and proceedings volumes, no book mainly concentrated on this topic was available so far in the scienti?c landscape. There is a considerable presence of books, not all recent releases, on vector optimization in the literature. We mention here the ones due to Chen,HuangandYang(cf. [49]),EhrgottandGandibleux(cf. [65]),Eichfelder (cf. [66]), Goh and Yang (cf. [77]), G.. opfert and Nehse (cf. [80]), G.. opfert, - ahi, Tammer and Z? alinescu (cf. [81]), Jahn (cf. [104]), Kaliszewski (cf. [108]), Luc (cf. [125]), Miettinen (cf. [130]), Mishra, Wang and Lai (cf. [131,132]) and Sawaragi, Nakayama and Tanino (cf. [163]), where vector duality is at most tangentially treated. We hope that from our e?orts will bene?t not only researchers interested in vector optimization, but also graduate and und- graduate students. The framework we consider is taken as general as possible, namely we work in (locally convex) topological vector spaces, going to the usual ?nite - mensional setting when this brings additional insights or relevant connections to the existing literature.

Handbook of Combinatorial Optimization
Combinatorial (or discrete) optimization is one of the most active fields in the interface of operations research, computer science, and applied math ematics. Combinatorial optimization problems arise in various applications, including communications network design, VLSI design, machine vision, air line crew scheduling, corporate planning, computer-aided design and man ufacturing, database query design, cellular telephone frequency assignment, constraint directed reasoning, and computational biology. Furthermore, combinatorial optimization problems occur in many diverse areas such as linear and integer programming, graph theory, artificial intelligence, and number theory. All these problems, when formulated mathematically as the minimization or maximization of a certain function defined on some domain, have a commonality of discreteness. Historically, combinatorial optimization starts with linear programming. Linear programming has an entire range of important applications including production planning and distribution, personnel assignment, finance, alloca tion of economic resources, circuit simulation, and control systems. Leonid Kantorovich and Tjalling Koopmans received the Nobel Prize (1975) for their work on the optimal allocation of resources. Two important discover ies, the ellipsoid method (1979) and interior point approaches (1984) both provide polynomial time algorithms for linear programming. These algo rithms have had a profound effect in combinatorial optimization. Many polynomial-time solvable combinatorial optimization problems are special cases of linear programming (e.g. matching and maximum flow). In addi tion, linear programming relaxations are often the basis for many approxi mation algorithms for solving NP-hard problems (e.g. dual heuristics).

Networked and Distributed Predictive Control
Networked and Distributed Predictive Control presents rigorous, yet practical, methods for the design of networked and distributed predictive control systems – the first book to do so. The design of model predictive control systems using Lyapunov-based techniques accounting for the influence of asynchronous and delayed measurements is followed by a treatment of networked control architecture development. This shows how networked control can augment dedicated control systems in a natural way and takes advantage of additional, potentially asynchronous and delayed measurements to maintain closed loop stability and significantly to improve closed-loop performance. The text then shifts focus to the design of distributed predictive control systems that cooperate efficiently in computing optimal manipulated input trajectories that achieve desired stability, performance and robustness specifications but spend a fraction of the time required by centralized control systems. Key features of this book include: • new techniques for networked and distributed control system design; • insight into issues associated with networked and distributed predictive control and their solution; • detailed appraisal of industrial relevance using computer simulation of nonlinear chemical process networks and wind- and solar-energy-generation systems; and • integrated exposition of novel research topics and rich resource of references to significant recent work. A full understanding of Networked and Distributed Predictive Control requires a basic knowledge of differential equations, linear and nonlinear control theory and optimization methods and the book is intended for academic researchers and graduate students studying control and for process control engineers. The constant attention to practical matters associated with implementation of the theory discussed will help each of these groups understand the application of the book’s methods in greater depth.

Multilevel Optimization: Algorithms and Applications
Researchers working with nonlinear programming often claim "the word is non linear" indicating that real applications require nonlinear modeling. The same is true for other areas such as multi-objective programming (there are always several goals in a real application), stochastic programming (all data is uncer tain and therefore stochastic models should be used), and so forth. In this spirit we claim: The word is multilevel. In many decision processes there is a hierarchy of decision makers, and decisions are made at different levels in this hierarchy. One way to handle such hierar chies is to focus on one level and include other levels' behaviors as assumptions. Multilevel programming is the research area that focuses on the whole hierar chy structure. In terms of modeling, the constraint domain associated with a multilevel programming problem is implicitly determined by a series of opti mization problems which must be solved in a predetermined sequence. If only two levels are considered, we have one leader (associated with the upper level) and one follower (associated with the lower level).

Adaptive Representations for Reinforcement Learning
This book presents new algorithms for reinforcement learning, a form of machine learning in which an autonomous agent seeks a control policy for a sequential decision task. Since current methods typically rely on manually designed solution representations, agents that automatically adapt their own representations have the potential to dramatically improve performance. This book introduces two novel approaches for automatically discovering high-performing representations. The first approach synthesizes temporal difference methods, the traditional approach to reinforcement learning, with evolutionary methods, which can learn representations for a broad class ofoptimization problems. This synthesis is accomplished by customizing evolutionarymethods to the on-line nature of reinforcement learning and using them to evolve representations for value function approximators. The second approach automatically learns representations based on piecewise-constant approximations of value functions. It begins with coarse representations and gradually refines them during learning, analyzing the current policy and value function to deduce the best refinements. This book also introduces a novel method for devising input representations. This method addresses the feature selection problem by extending an algorithm that evolves the topology and weights of neural networks such that it evolves their inputs too.In addition to introducing these new methods, this book presents extensive empirical results in multiple domains demonstrating that these techniques can substantially improve performance over methodswith manual representations.

Multidimensional Particle Swarm Optimization for Machine Learning and Pattern Recognition
For many engineering problems we require optimization processes with dynamic adaptation as we aim to establish the dimension of the search space where the optimum solution resides and develop robust techniques to avoid the local optima usually associated with multimodal problems. This book explores multidimensional particle swarm optimization, a technique developed by the authors that addresses these requirements in a well-defined algorithmic approach. After an introduction to the key optimization techniques, the authors introduce their unified framework and demonstrate its advantages in challenging application domains, focusing on the state of the art of multidimensional extensions such as global convergence in particle swarm optimization, dynamic data clustering, evolutionary neural networks, biomedical applications and personalized ECG classification, content-based image classification and retrieval, and evolutionary feature synthesis. The content is characterized by strong practical considerations, and the book is supported with fully documented source code for all applications presented, as well as many sample datasets. The book will be of benefit to researchers and practitioners working in the areas of machine intelligence, signal processing, pattern recognition, and data mining, or using principles from these areas in their application domains. It may also be used as a reference text for graduate courses on swarm optimization, data clustering and classification, content-based multimedia search, and biomedical signal processing applications.

Aggregation in Large-Scale Optimization
When analyzing systems with a large number of parameters, the dimen sion of the original system may present insurmountable difficulties for the analysis. It may then be convenient to reformulate the original system in terms of substantially fewer aggregated variables, or macrovariables. In other words, an original system with an n-dimensional vector of states is reformulated as a system with a vector of dimension much less than n. The aggregated variables are either readily defined and processed, or the aggregated system may be considered as an approximate model for the orig inal system. In the latter case, the operation of the original system can be exhaustively analyzed within the framework of the aggregated model, and one faces the problems of defining the rules for introducing macrovariables, specifying loss of information and accuracy, recovering original variables from aggregates, etc. We consider also in detail the so-called iterative aggregation approach. It constructs an iterative process, at· every step of which a macroproblem is solved that is simpler than the original problem because of its lower dimension. Aggregation weights are then updated, and the procedure passes to the next step. Macrovariables are commonly used in coordinating problems of hierarchical optimization.

Intelligent Decision Systems in Large-Scale Distributed Environments
One of the most challenging issues for the intelligent decision systems is to effectively manage the large-scale complex distributed environments such as computational clouds, grids, ad hoc and P2P networks, under the different types of users, their relations, and real-world uncertainties. In this context the IT resources and services usually belong to different owners (institutions, enterprises, or individuals) and are managed by different administrators. These administrators conform to different sets of rules and configuration directives, and can impose different usage policies on the system users. Additionally, uncertainties are presented in various types of information that are incomplete, imprecise, fragmentary or overloading, which hinders the full and precise determination of the evaluation criteria, their subsequent and selection, the assignment scores, and eventually the final integrated decision result. This book presents new ideas, analysis, implementations and evaluation of the next generation intelligent techniques for solving complex decision problems in large-scale distributed systems. In 15 chapters several important formulations of the decision problems in heterogeneous environments are identified and a review of the recent approaches, from game theoretical models and computational intelligent techniques, such as genetic, memetic and evolutionary algorithms, to intelligent multi-agent systems and networking are presented. We believe that this volume will serve as a reference for the students, researchers and industry practitioners working in or are interested in joining interdisciplinary works in the areas of intelligent decision systems using emergent distributed computing paradigms. The foundati ons of di stributed programming compri se all the fasci nating questions of computing science: the development of adequate com putational , conceptual and semantic model s for distributed systems, specification methods, verification techniques, transformation rules, the development of suitable representations by programming languages, evaluation and execution of programs describing distributed systems. Being the 7th in a series of ASI Summer Schools at Marktoberdorf, these lectures concentrated on distributed systems. Already during the previous Summer School s at Marktoberdorf aspects of di stributed systems were important periodical topics. The rising interest in distributed systems, their design and implementation led to a considerable amount of research in this area. This is impressively demonstrated by the broad spectrum of the topics of the papers in this vol ume, although they are far from being comprehensive for the work done in the area of distributed systems. Distributed systems are extraordinarily complex and allow many distinct viewpoints. Therefore the literature on distributed systems sometimes may look rather confusing to people not working in the field. Nevertheless there is no reason for resignation: the Summer School was able to show considerable convergence in ideas, approaches and concepts for distributed systems.

Local Search in Combinatorial Optimization
In the past three decades, local search has grown from a simple heuristic idea into a mature field of research in combinatorial optimization that is attracting ever-increasing attention. Local search is still the method of choice for NP-hard problems as it provides a robust approach for obtaining high-quality solutions to problems of a realistic size in reasonable time. Local Search in Combinatorial Optimization covers local search and its variants from both a theoretical and practical point of view, each topic discussed by a leading authority. This book is an important reference and invaluable source of inspiration for students and researchers in discrete mathematics, computer science, operations research, industrial engineering, and management science. In addition to the editors, the contributors are Mihalis Yannakakis, Craig A. Tovey, Jan H. M. Korst, Peter J. M. van Laarhoven, Alain Hertz, Eric Taillard, Dominique de Werra, Heinz Muhlenbein, Carsten Peterson, Bo Soderberg, David S. Johnson, Lyle A. McGeoch, Michel Gendreau, Gilbert Laporte, Jean-Yves Potvin, Gerard A. P. Kindervater, Martin W. P. Savelsbergh, Edward J. Anderson, Celia A. Glass, Chris N. Potts, C.
