Convexification and Global Optimization in Continuous and Mixed-Integer Nonlinear Programming
Interest in constrained optimization originated with the simple linear pro gramming model since it was practical and perhaps the only computationally tractable model at the time. Constrained linear optimization models were soon adopted in numerous application areas and are perhaps the most widely used mathematical models in operations research and management science at the time of this writing. Modelers have, however, found the assumption of linearity to be overly restrictive in expressing the real-world phenomena and problems in economics, finance, business, communication, engineering design, computational biology, and other areas that frequently demand the use of nonlinear expressions and discrete variables in optimization models. Both of these extensions of the linear programming model are NP-hard, thus representing very challenging problems. On the brighter side, recent advances in algorithmic and computing technology make it possible to re visit these problems with the hope of solving practically relevant problems in reasonable amounts of computational time. Initial attempts at solving nonlinear programs concentrated on the de velopment of local optimization methods guaranteeing globality under the assumption of convexity. On the other hand, the integer programming liter ature has concentrated on the development of methods that ensure global optima. The aim of this book is to marry the advancements in solving nonlinear and integer programming models and to develop new results in the more general framework of mixed-integer nonlinear programs (MINLPs) with the goal of devising practically efficient global optimization algorithms for MINLPs.

Integrated Methods for Optimization
The first edition of Integrated Methods for Optimization was published in January 2007. Because the book covers a rapidly developing field, the time is right for a second edition. The book provides a unified treatment of optimization methods. It brings ideas from mathematical programming (MP), constraint programming (CP), and global optimization (GO)into a single volume. There is no reason these must be learned as separate fields, as they normally are, and there are three reasons they should be studied together. (1) There is much in common among them intellectually, and to a large degree they can be understood as special cases of a single underlying solution technology. (2) A growing literature reports how they can be profitably integrated to formulate and solve a wide range of problems. (3) Several software packages now incorporate techniques from two or more of these fields. The book provides a unique resource for graduate students and practitioners who want a well-rounded background in optimization methods within a single course of study. Engineering students are a particularly large potential audience, because engineering optimization problems often benefit from a combined approach—particularly where design, scheduling, or logistics are involved. The text is also of value to those studying operations research, because their educational programs rarely cover CP, and to those studying computer science and artificial intelligence (AI), because their curricula typically omit MP and GO. The text is also useful for practitioners in any of these areas who want to learn about another, because it provides a more concise and accessible treatment than other texts. The book can cover so wide a range of material because it focuses on ideas that arerelevant to the methods used in general-purpose optimization and constraint solvers. The book focuses on ideas behind the methods that have proved useful in general-purpose optimization and constraint solvers, as well as integrated solvers of the present and foreseeable future. The second edition updates results in this area and includes several major new topics:Background material in linear, nonlinear, and dynamic programming.Network flow theory, due to its importance in filtering algorithms.A chapter on generalized duality theory that more explicitly develops a unifying primal-dual algorithmic structure for optimization methods. An extensive survey of search methods from both MP and AI, using the primal-dual framework as an organizing principle.Coverage of several additional global constraints used in CP solvers. The book continues to focus on exact as opposed to heuristic methods. It is possible to bring heuristic methods into the unifying scheme described in the book, and the new edition will retain the brief discussion of how this might be done.

New Meta-heuristic Optimization Algorithm Based on the String Theory Paradigm from Physics
This book focuses on the fields of nature-inspired algorithms, optimization problems and fuzzy logic. In this book, a new metaheuristic based on String Theory from Physics is proposed. It is important to mention that we have proposed the new algorithm to generate new potential solutions in optimization problems in order to find new ways that could improve the results in solving these problems. We are presenting the results for the proposed method in different cases of study. The first case, is optimization of traditional benchmark mathematical functions. The second case, is the optimization of benchmark functions of the CEC 2015 Competition and we are also presenting results of the CEC 2017 Competition on Constrained Real-Parameter Optimization that are problems that contain the presence of constraints that alter the shape of the search space making them more difficult to solve. Finally, in the third case, we are presenting the optimization of a fuzzy inference system, specifically for finding the optimal design of a fuzzy controller for an autonomous mobile robot. It is important to mention that in all study cases we are presenting statistical tests in or-der to validate the performance of proposed method. In summary, we believe that this book will be of great interest to a wide audience, ranging from engineering and science graduate students, to researchers and professors in computational intelligence, metaheuristics, optimization, robotics and control.

Intelligent Computational Optimization in Engineering
We often come across computational optimization virtually in all branches of engineering and industry. Many engineering problems involve heuristic search and optimization, and, once discretized, may become combinatorial in nature, which gives rise to certain difficulties in terms of solution procedure. Some of these problems have enormous search spaces, are NP-hard and hence require heuristic solution techniques. Another difficulty is the lack of ability of classical solution techniques to determine appropriate optima of non-convex problems. Under these conditions, recent advances in computational optimization techniques have been shown to be advantageous and successful compared to classical approaches. This Volume presents some of the latest developments with a focus on the design of algorithms for computational optimization and their applications in practice. Through the chapters of this book, researchers and practitioners share their experience and newest methodologies with regard to intelligent optimization and provide various case studies of the application of intelligent optimization techniques in real-world applications. This book can serve as an excellent reference for researchers and graduate students in computer science, various engineering disciplines and the industry.

Hardware-Aware Probabilistic Machine Learning Models
This book proposes probabilistic machine learning models that represent the hardware properties of the device hosting them. These models can be used to evaluate the impact that a specific device configuration may have on resource consumption and performance of the machine learning task, with the overarching goal of balancing the two optimally. The book first motivates extreme-edge computing in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm. Then, it briefly reviews the steps involved in the execution of a machine learning task and identifies the implications associated with implementing this type of workload in resource-constrained devices. The core of this book focuses on augmenting and exploiting the properties of Bayesian Networks and Probabilistic Circuits in order to endow them with hardware-awareness. The proposed models can encode the properties of various device sub-systems that are typically not considered by other resource-aware strategies, bringing about resource-saving opportunities that traditional approaches fail to uncover. The performance of the proposed models and strategies is empirically evaluated for several use cases. All of the considered examples show the potential of attaining significant resource-saving opportunities with minimal accuracy losses at application time. Overall, this book constitutes a novel approach to hardware-algorithm co-optimization that further bridges the fields of Machine Learning and Electrical Engineering.

Machine Learning under Resource Constraints - Discovery in Physics
Machine Learning under Resource Constraints addresses novel machine learning algorithms that are challenged by high-throughput data, by high dimensions, or by complex structures of the data in three volumes. Resource constraints are given by the relation between the demands for processing the data and the capacity of the computing machinery. The resources are runtime, memory, communication, and energy. Hence, modern computer architectures play a significant role. Novel machine learning algorithms are optimized with regard to minimal resource consumption. Moreover, learned predictions are executed on diverse architectures to save resources. It provides a comprehensive overview of the novel approaches to machine learning research that consider resource constraints, as well as the application of the described methods in various domains of science and engineering. Volume 2 covers machine learning for knowledge discovery in particle and astroparticle physics. Their instruments, e.g., particle detectors or telescopes, gather petabytes of data. Here, machine learning is necessary not only to process the vast amounts of data and to detect the relevant examples efficiently, but also as part of the knowledge discovery process itself. The physical knowledge is encoded in simulations that are used to train the machine learning models. At the same time, the interpretation of the learned models serves to expand the physical knowledge. This results in a cycle of theory enhancement supported by machine learning.

Algorithms for Reinforcement Learning
Reinforcement learning is a learning paradigm concerned with learning to control a system so as to maximize a numerical performance measure that expresses a long-term objective. What distinguishes reinforcement learning from supervised learning is that only partial feedback is given to the learner about the learner's predictions. Further, the predictions may have long term effects through influencing the future state of the controlled system. Thus, time plays a special role. The goal in reinforcement learning is to develop efficient learning algorithms, as well as to understand the algorithms' merits and limitations. Reinforcement learning is of great interest because of the large number of practical applications that it can be used to address, ranging from problems in artificial intelligence to operations research or control engineering. In this book, we focus on those algorithms of reinforcement learning that build on the powerful theory of dynamic programming. We give a fairly comprehensive catalog of learning problems, describe the core ideas, note a large number of state of the art algorithms, followed by the discussion of their theoretical properties and limitations.Table of Contents: Markov Decision Processes / Value Prediction Problems / Control / For Further Exploration

Optimization Methods for Logical Inference
Merging logic and mathematics in deductive inference-an innovative, cutting-edge approach. Optimization methods for logical inference? Absolutely, say Vijay Chandru and John Hooker, two major contributors to this rapidly expanding field. And even though "solving logical inference problems with optimization methods may seem a bit like eating sauerkraut with chopsticks. . . it is the mathematical structure of a problem that determines whether an optimization model can help solve it, not the context in which the problem occurs." Presenting powerful, proven optimization techniques for logic inference problems, Chandru and Hooker show how optimization models can be used not only to solve problems in artificial intelligence and mathematical programming, but also have tremendous application in complex systems in general. They survey most of the recent research from the past decade in logic/optimization interfaces, incorporate some of their own results, and emphasize the types of logic most receptive to optimization methods-propositional logic, first order predicate logic, probabilistic and related logics, logics that combine evidence such as Dempster-Shafer theory, rule systems with confidence factors, and constraint logic programming systems. Requiring no background in logic and clearly explaining all topics from the ground up, Optimization Methods for Logical Inference is an invaluable guide for scientists and students in diverse fields, including operations research, computer science, artificial intelligence, decision support systems, and engineering.

Deep Swarm and Evolution for Generative Artificial Intelligence
This book provides theoretical and practical knowledge about swarm and evolutionary approach of generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs). The development of such tools contributes to better optimizing methodologies with the integration of several machinelearning and deep learning techniques. In particular, it discusses how the “emergence” concept can contribute to the improvement of AI.The book aims to model human cognitive f unction in terms of “emergence” and to explain the feasibility of AI. To this end, it focuses on human perceptions of “utility.” It describes the emergence of various cognitive errors, and irrational behaviours in the multiobjective situations. It also reviews the cognitive differences and similarities between humans and LLMs. Such studies are important when applying LLMs to real-world tasks that involve human cognition, e.g., financial engineering and market issues. The book describes the intelligent behaviour of living organisms. This is to clarify how to achieve AI in the direction of artificial life. It describes sexual selection, which is a well-known natural phenomenon that troubled Darwin, i.e., why evolutionarily useless items evolved such as peacock feathers and moose antlers etc. The book shows how sexual selection is extended as “novelty search” for the application of generative AI, i.e., the image generation with diffusion model. Real-world applications are emphasised. Empirical examples from real-world data show how the concept of deep swarm and evolution is successfully applied when addressing tasks from such recent fields as robotics, e-commerce Web Shop and image generation etc.

Reinforcement Learning in Action
Reinforcement learning (RL) has become the engine behind some of the most significant advances in modern artificial intelligence, from defeating world champions in Go to aligning large language models with human preferences. Yet despite its central role, RL remains poorly understood by many practitioners who work with these systems daily. Reinforcement Learning in Action: From Foundations to Frontiers bridges the gap between classical RL theory and the cutting-edge techniques driving today’s AI breakthroughs. The book traces a complete path from Markov Decision Processes and Bellman equations through deep RL methods (DQN, REINFORCE, Actor-Critic, PPO) to the modern landscape of LLM alignment (RLHF, DPO, SimPO, KTO), reasoning optimization (GRPO, VinePPO, MCTS), and agentic systems with tool use, memory, and multi-turn planning. A distinguishing feature is the book’s consistent five-layer pedagogical structure: each algorithm is presented with its key characteristics, a full mathematical derivation, an honest assessment of its advantages and limitations, a complete from-scratch Python/PyTorch implementation in which variable names match the equations, and a hands-on case study with reproducible experiments. Case studies progress from Grid World navigation and CartPole control to fine-tuning language models with DPO on the HuggingFace ecosystem, training reasoning models with GRPO on mathematical benchmarks, and building a full agentic customer support system. Written for ML engineers, researchers, and advanced students, this book provides both the conceptual depth and implementation fluency needed to understand, build, and extend the RL systems shaping the future of AI.

Machine Learning
Machine Learning: Discriminative and Generative covers the main contemporary themes and tools in machine learning ranging from Bayesian probabilistic models to discriminative support-vector machines. However, unlike previous books that only discuss these rather different approaches in isolation, it bridges the two schools of thought together within a common framework, elegantly connecting their various theories and making one common big-picture. Also, this bridge brings forth new hybrid discriminative-generative tools that combine the strengths of both camps. This book serves multiple purposes as well. The framework acts as a scientific breakthrough, fusing the areas of generative and discriminative learning and will be of interest to many researchers. However, as a conceptual breakthrough, this common framework unifies many previously unrelated tools and techniques and makes them understandable to a larger portion of the public. This gives the more practical-minded engineer, student and the industrial public an easy-access and more sensible road map into the world of machine learning. Machine Learning: Discriminative and Generative is designed for an audience composed of researchers & practitioners in industry and academia. The book is also suitable as a secondary text for graduate-level students in computer science and engineering.

Learning Decision Sequences For Repetitive Processes—Selected Algorithms
This book provides tools and algorithms for solving a wide class of optimization tasks by learning from their repetitions. A unified framework is provided for learning algorithms that are based on the stochastic gradient (a golden standard in learning), including random simultaneous perturbations and the response surface the methodology. Original algorithms include model-free learning of short decision sequences as well as long sequences—relying on model-supported gradient estimation. Learning is based on whole sequences of a process observation that are either vectors or images. This methodology is applicable to repetitive processes, covering a wide range from (additive) manufacturing to decision making for COVID-19 waves mitigation. A distinctive feature of the algorithms is learning between repetitions—this idea extends the paradigms of iterative learning and run-to-run control. The main ideas can be extended to other decision learning tasks, not included in this book. The text is written in a comprehensible way with the emphasis on a user-friendly presentation of the algorithms, their explanations, and recommendations on how to select them. The book is expected to be of interest to researchers, Ph.D., and graduate students in computer science and engineering, operations research, decision making, and those working on the iterative learning control.
