Material Child
As she describes the youth culture of Japan, Merry White draws comparisons with the interests and activities pursued by teenagers in the United States and the contrasting attitudes of adults in Japan and the U.S. towards adolescence. The result is both engrossing and enlightening.

From Molecules to Materials
This interdisciplinary book focuses on the various aspects transformation of the energy from sunlight into the chemical bonds of a fuel, known as the artificial photosynthesis, and addresses the emergent challenges connected with growing societal demands for clean and sustainable energy technologies. The editors assemble the research of world-recognized experts in the field of both molecular and materials artificial systems for energy production. Contributors cover the full scope of research on photosynthesis and related energy processes.

Bioinspired Materials and Metamaterials
Development of bioinspired materials and metamaterials has changed the philosophy of materials engineering and opened new technological possibilities, as they demonstrate properties that are not found in naturally occurring materials. This book examines advances in these emerging materials classes and investigates how their tailor-engineered properties, such as specific surface energy or refraction index, enable the design of devices and ultimately the ability to solve complex societal problems that are, in principle, impossible with traditional materials. The aim of this book is to survey the scientific foundations of the design and properties of bioinspired materials and metamaterials and the way they enter engineering applications.Introduces the physico-chemical foundations, theoretical groundings, and main equations of biomimetic and metamaterials scienceDescribes how to develop and design these advanced materials and their applicationsFeatures end-of-chapter problems to help readers apply the principlesSurveys achievements including metamaterials cloaking and the negative mass effectEmphasizes ecological aspects of materials scienceThe text is intended for materials engineering students who have completed courses in general physics, chemistry, and calculus, as well as researchers in materials science and engineering.

Materialism for the Masses
Nietzsche and Freud saw Christianity as metaphysical escapism, with Nietzsche calling the religion a "Platonism for the masses" and faulting Paul the apostle for negating more immanent, material modes of thought and political solidarity. Integrating this debate with the philosophies of difference espoused by Gilles Deleuze, Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Jacques Lacan, and Pier Paolo Pasolini, Ward Blanton argues that genealogical interventions into the political economies of Western cultural memory do not go far enough in relation to the imagined founder of Christianity. Blanton challenges the idea of Paulinism as a pop Platonic worldview or form of social control. He unearths in Pauline legacies otherwise repressed resources for new materialist spiritualities and new forms of radical political solidarity, liberating "religion" from inherited interpretive assumptions so philosophical thought can manifest in risky, radical freedom.
