Extra Day
The Extra Day Algernon Blackwood's tale is about three children growing up in the Old Mill House in the Victorian era. Judy, Tim, and Maria were just little children. It was impossible to say exactly what their ages were, except that they were just the usual age, that Judy was the eldest, Maria the youngest, and that Tim, accordingly, came in between the two. When their Uncle Felix comes to visit, his magical storytelling and patience with the children impacts their lives significantly. There is a great deal of foreshadowing that a great surprise is coming with a great revelation. For instance, Uncle Felix says, "Time always prevents, doesn't it? If only we could make it stop - get behind time, as it were - we might have a chance. Some day, perhaps, we shall." Uncle Felix challenges the children to talk to the night wind and ask it for answers. Although this book was not necessarily written for children, it is a great book to read to kids

Globalization, Technological Change, and Public Education
Globalization, Technological Change, and Public Education documents the dramatic changes taking place in public education through the incorporation of new information technologies. These additions to the public school environment have generally been seen as enabling tools to help students and nations compete in the global marketplace. Yet a closer look at the interplay of technological change and organizational restructuring suggests the emergence of new, less promising power relations. Through detailed ethnographic research and interviews in the Los Angeles public school system, Torin Monahan reveals how, with few exceptions, these changes to the educational process are forcing both students and workers to adapt to systems that are ever more rigid and controlling.

Consciousness and The Mind-Body Problem
Over the past three decades, the challenge that conscious experience poses to physicalism—the widely held view that the universe is a completely physical system—has provoked a growing debate in philosophy of mind studies and given rise to a great deal of literature on the subject. Ideal for courses in consciousness and the philosophy of mind, Consciousness and The Mind-Body Problem: A Reader presents thirty-three classic and contemporary readings, organized into five sections that cover the major issues in this debate: the challenge for physicalism, physicalist responses, alternative responses, the significance of ignorance, and mental causation. Edited by Torin Alter and Robert J. Howell, the volume features work from such leading figures as Karen Bennett, NedBlock, David J. Chalmers, Frank Jackson, Colin McGinn, David Papineau, and many others. It is enhanced by a thorough general introduction by the editors, which explains "the hard problem of consciousness"—the question of how any physical phenomenon could give rise to conscious experience. The introductionalso provides historical and conceptual background and explains how the consciousness/mind-body problem is related to such theories as the identity theory, dualism, and functionalism. In addition, accessible introductions outline the themes and readings contained in each section.
