Optimization Algorithms on Matrix Manifolds
Many problems in the sciences and engineering can be rephrased as optimization problems on matrix search spaces endowed with a so-called manifold structure. This book shows how to exploit the special structure of such problems to develop efficient numerical algorithms. It places careful emphasis on both the numerical formulation of the algorithm and its differential geometric abstraction--illustrating how good algorithms draw equally from the insights of differential geometry, optimization, and numerical analysis. Two more theoretical chapters provide readers with the background in differential geometry necessary to algorithmic development. In the other chapters, several well-known optimization methods such as steepest descent and conjugate gradients are generalized to abstract manifolds. The book provides a generic development of each of these methods, building upon the material of the geometric chapters. It then guides readers through the calculations that turn these geometrically formulated methods into concrete numerical algorithms. The state-of-the-art algorithms given as examples are competitive with the best existing algorithms for a selection of eigenspace problems in numerical linear algebra. Optimization Algorithms on Matrix Manifolds offers techniques with broad applications in linear algebra, signal processing, data mining, computer vision, and statistical analysis. It can serve as a graduate-level textbook and will be of interest to applied mathematicians, engineers, and computer scientists.

Handbook of Nature-Inspired Optimization Algorithms: The State of the Art
This book presents recent contributions and significant development, advanced issues, and challenges. In real-world problems and applications, most of the optimization problems involve different types of constraints. These problems are called constrained optimization problems (COPs). The optimization of the constrained optimization problems is considered a challenging task since the optimum solution(s) must be feasible. In their original design, evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are able to solve unconstrained optimization problems effectively. As a result, in the past decade, many researchers have developed a variety of constraint handling techniques, incorporated into (EAs) designs, to counter this deficiency. The main objective for this book is to make available a self-contained collection of modern research addressing the general constrained optimization problems in many real-world applications using nature-inspired optimization algorithms. This book is suitable for a graduate class on optimization, but will also be useful for interested senior students working on their research projects.

Genetic Algorithms for Machine Learning
The articles presented here were selected from preliminary versions presented at the International Conference on Genetic Algorithms in June 1991, as well as at a special Workshop on Genetic Algorithms for Machine Learning at the same Conference. Genetic algorithms are general-purpose search algorithms that use principles inspired by natural population genetics to evolve solutions to problems. The basic idea is to maintain a population of knowledge structure that represent candidate solutions to the problem of interest. The population evolves over time through a process of competition (i.e. survival of the fittest) and controlled variation (i.e. recombination and mutation). Genetic Algorithms for Machine Learning contains articles on three topics that have not been the focus of many previous articles on GAs, namely concept learning from examples, reinforcement learning for control, and theoretical analysis of GAs. It is hoped that this sample will serve to broaden the acquaintance of the general machine learning community with the major areas of work on GAs. The articles in this book address a number of central issues in applying GAs to machine learning problems. For example, the choice of appropriate representation and the corresponding set of genetic learning operators is an important set of decisions facing a user of a genetic algorithm. The study of genetic algorithms is proceeding at a robust pace. If experimental progress and theoretical understanding continue to evolve as expected, genetic algorithms will continue to provide a distinctive approach to machine learning. Genetic Algorithms for Machine Learning is an edited volume of original research made up of invited contributions by leading researchers.

Initialization and Diversity in Optimization Algorithms
Designing new algorithms in swarm intelligence is a complex undertaking. Two critical factors have been seen to have a direct correlation with positive results. First is initialization, which serves as the initial step for all swarm intelligence techniques. Candidate solutions are generated to form the initial population, which are subsequently modified during the iterative process. A well-initialized population increases the algorithm's chances of avoiding local optima and finding the global optimum in fewer iterations. Although random distributions are commonly used for initialization, there are various ways to initialize the population elements.Maintaining diversity among the population elements throughout the iterative process is also essential. This diversity facilitates a more thorough and efficient exploration of the search space. In swarm intelligence algorithms, there are multiple methods to measure diversity, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. This book presents the theory behind the initialization process and the different mechanisms. Additionally, it includes a comparative study of various diversity indicators. It explores different methodologies to compute its value and explains how it can be incorporated as a mechanism for deciding when to apply operators during the optimization process. Multiple examples are provided in the book using two classical algorithms: Differential Evolution and Particle Swarm Optimization. It includes MATLAB® code and offers several exercises that readers can use for experimentation and design purposes.

Optimization
This book presents a comprehensive treatment of necessary conditions for general optimization problems. The presentation is carried out in the context of a general theory for extremal problems in a topological vector space setting. Following a brief summary of the required background, generalized Lagrange multiplier rules are derived for optimization problems with equality and generalized "inequality" constraints. The treatment stresses the importance of the choice of the underlying set over which the optimization is to be performed, the delicate balance between differentiability-continuity requirements on the constraint functionals, and the manner in which the underlying set is approximated by a convex set. The generalized multiplier rules are used to derive abstract maximum principles for classes of optimization problems defined in terms of operator equations in a Banach space. It is shown that special cases include the usual maximum principles for general optimal control problems described in terms of diverse systems such as ordinary differential equations, functional differential equations, Volterra integral equations, and difference equations.Careful distinction is made throughout the analysis between "local" and "global" maximum principles. Optimization
This book deals with optimality conditions, algorithms, and discretization tech niques for nonlinear programming, semi-infinite optimization, and optimal con trol problems. The unifying thread in the presentation consists of an abstract theory, within which optimality conditions are expressed in the form of zeros of optimality junctions, algorithms are characterized by point-to-set iteration maps, and all the numerical approximations required in the solution of semi-infinite optimization and optimal control problems are treated within the context of con sistent approximations and algorithm implementation techniques. Traditionally, necessary optimality conditions for optimization problems are presented in Lagrange, F. John, or Karush-Kuhn-Tucker multiplier forms, with gradients used for smooth problems and subgradients for nonsmooth prob lems. We present these classical optimality conditions and show that they are satisfied at a point if and only if this point is a zero of an upper semicontinuous optimality junction. The use of optimality functions has several advantages. First, optimality functions can be used in an abstract study of optimization algo rithms. Second, many optimization algorithms can be shown to use search directions that are obtained in evaluating optimality functions, thus establishing a clear relationship between optimality conditions and algorithms. Third, estab lishing optimality conditions for highly complex problems, such as optimal con trol problems with control and trajectory constraints, is much easier in terms of optimality functions than in the classical manner. In addition, the relationship between optimality conditions for finite-dimensional problems and semi-infinite optimization and optimal control problems becomes transparent.
