Network Control and Optimization
We are proud to present the proceedings of NET-COOP 2009, the inter- tionalconferenceonnetworkcontrolandoptimization,co-organizedbyEURAN- DOM/Eindhoven University of Technology and CWI. This year’s conference at EURANDOM, held November 23–25, was the third in line after previous e- tions in Avignon (2007) and Paris (2008). NET-COOP 2009 was organized in conjunction with the Euro-NF workshop on “New Trends in Modeling, Quan- tative Methods, and Measurements. ” While organized within the framework of Euro-NF, NET-COOP enjoys great interest beyond Euro-NF, as is attested by the geographic origins of the papers in these proceedings. TheNET-COOPconferencefocusesonperformanceanalysis,controland- timization of communication networks, including wired networks, wireless n- works, peer to peer networks and delay tolerant networks. In each of these domains network operators and service providers face the challenging task to e?ciently provide service at their customer’s standards in a highly dynamic - vironment. Internet tra?c continues to grow tremendously in terms of volume as well as diversity. This development is fueled by the increasing availability of high-bandwidth access (both wired and wireless) to end users, opening new ground for evolving and newly emerging wide-band applications. The increase in network complexity, as well as the plurality of parties involved in network operation, calls for e?cient distributed control. New models and techniques for the control and optimization of networks are needed to address the challenge of allocating communication resources e?ciently and fairly, while accounting for non-cooperative behavior.

Distributed Average Tracking in Multi-agent Systems
This book presents a systematic study of an emerging field in the development of multi-agent systems. In a wide spectrum of applications, it is now common to see that multiple agents work cooperatively to accomplish a complex task. The book assists the implementation of such applications by promoting the ability of multi-agent systems to track — using local communication only — the mean value of signals of interest, even when these change rapidly with time and when no individual agent has direct access to the average signal across the whole team; for example, when a better estimation/control performance of multi-robot systems has to be guaranteed, it is desirable for each robot to compute or track the averaged changing measurements of all the robots at any time by communicating with only local neighboring robots. The book covers three factors in successful distributed average tracking:algorithm design via nonsmooth and extended PI control;distributed average tracking for double-integrator, general-linear, Euler–Lagrange, and input-saturated dynamics; andapplications in dynamic region-following formation control and distributed convex optimization. The book presents both the theory and applications in a general but self-contained manner, making it easy to follow for newcomers to the topic. The content presented fosters research advances in distributed average tracking and inspires future research directions in the field in academia and industry.

Due to the versatile nature of computational intelligence techniques, they can be used at different phases of the machining process design and optimization process. While powerful machine-learning methods like gene expression programming (GEP), artificial neural network (ANN), support vector regression (SVM), and more can be used at an early phase of the design and optimization process to act as predictive models for the actual experiments, other metaheuristics-based methods like cuckoo search, ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization, and others can be used to optimize these predictive models to find the optimal process parameter combination. These machining and optimization processes are the future of manufacturing. Data-Driven Optimization of Manufacturing Processes contains the latest research on the application of state-of-the-art computational intelligence techniques from both predictive modeling and optimization viewpoint in both soft computing approaches and machining processes. The chapters provide solutions applicable to machining or manufacturing process problems and for optimizing the problems involved in other areas of mechanical, civil, and electrical engineering, making it a valuable reference tool. This book is addressed to engineers, scientists, practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and students interested in the potential of recently developed powerful computational intelligence techniques towards improving the performance of machining processes.

Merging Optimization and Control in Power Systems
Merging Optimization and Control in Power Systems A novel exploration of distributed control in power systems with insightful discussions of physical and cyber restrictions In Merging Optimization and Control in Power Systems an accomplished team of engineers deliver a comprehensive introduction to distributed optimal control in power systems. The book re-imagines control design within the framework of cyber-physical systems with restrictions in both the physical and cyber spaces, addressing operational constraints, non-smooth objective functions, rapid power fluctuations caused by renewable generations, partial control coverage, communication delays, and non-identical sampling rates. This book bridges the gap between optimization and control in two ways. First, optimization-based feedback control is explored. The authors describe feedback controllers which automatically drive system states asymptotically to specific, desired optimal working points. Second, the book discusses feedback-based optimization. Leveraging the philosophy of feedback control, the authors envision the online solving of complicated optimization and control problems of power systems to adapt to time-varying environments. Readers will also find: A thorough argument against the traditional and centralized hierarchy of power system control in favor of the merged approach described in the bookComprehensive explorations of the fundamental changes gripping the power system today, including the increasing penetration of renewable and distributed generation, the proliferation of electric vehicles, and increases in load demandData, tables, illustrations, and case studies covering realistic power systems and experimentsIn-depth examinations of physical and cyber restrictions, as well as the robustness and adaptability of the proposed model Perfect for postgraduate students and researchers with the prerequisite knowledge of power system analysis, operation, and dynamics, convex optimization theory, and control theory, Merging Optimization and Control in Power Systems is an advanced and timely treatment of distributed optimal controller design.
