Disney & His Worlds
This work provides an overview of the Disney organization, in particular the theme parks and their significance for contemporary culture. The author examines topics such as Walt Disney's life and how his biography has been constructed, the Disney Company in the years after his death and various writings about the Disney theme parks. He raises important issues about the parks such as: whether they are harbringers of postmodernism; the significance of consumption at the parks; and the representation of past and future. The discussion of theme parks links with the presentation of Disney's biography and his organization by showing how central economic and business considerations have been in their development and how the significance of these considerations is typically marginalized in order to place an emphasis on fantasy and magic.

Fashion and Materialism
A cultural and historical philosophy of fashion in economic and social life from the 1830s to the present dayUlrich Lehmann brings together methods and ideas from social sciences and material production to offer a new political reading of fashion in today's post-democracy. Accessing rare source material across a wide range of European languages and cultures, he offers insight into new working structures in the manufacture of garments and textiles. Reinvigorates materialism as a critical approach to analysing economics, society and media through the thematic focus on fashion as the economically and culturally dominant sector within post-industrial societiesCase studies include the male suit in Alfred Hitchcock's film 'North by Northwest' (1959), the revolutionary production methods in the work of Carol Christian Poell and the innovative textile manufacture of Bonotto in Molvena, north-east ItalyRedirects fashion theory toward materiality and materialism from previous art-historical and social-anthropological approachesExposes the need critically to engage with fashion production, away from the exclusive reading of fashion through its media representationExtends the discussion of fashion production from aspects of labour conditions and sustainability to the materialist critique of the fashion system

Selected Works of E. L. Lehmann
These volumes present a selection of Erich L. Lehmann’s monumental contributions to Statistics. These works are multifaceted. His early work included fundamental contributions to hypothesis testing, theory of point estimation, and more generally to decision theory. His work in Nonparametric Statistics was groundbreaking. His fundamental contributions in this area include results that came to assuage the anxiety of statisticians that were skeptical of nonparametric methodologies, and his work on concepts of dependence has created a large literature. The two volumes are divided into chapters of related works. Invited contributors have critiqued the papers in each chapter, and the reprinted group of papers follows each commentary. A complete bibliography that contains links to recorded talks by Erich Lehmann – and which are freely accessible to the public – and a list of Ph.D. students are also included. These volumes belong in every statistician’s personal collection and are a required holding for any institutional library.

Rudolf Serkin
Like Heifitz and Horowitz, Rudolf Serkin was a virtuosic solo performer who made European classical music an important part of American middle class culture in the mid-20th century. This book, the first biography of this influential pianist, chronicles Serkin's life and career and assesses his impact on classical music in America.Beginning with Serkin's upbringing and early adulthood in Europe, the book reveals the story of a religious Czech Jew's assimilation into Austro-German society and particularly into the profoundly German household of Adolf Busch. When Serkin immigrated to the United States, he imported with him a particularly German perspective on classical music performance. Best known for his recordings of Beethoven sonatas, Serkin also performed Brahms, Mozart, Bach, and other composers' works. Later in his career, he became an active teacher, embarking on a long association with the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. As artistic director of the Marlboro Music School and Festival in Vermont, Serkin played a key role in institutionalizing a redefinition of musical values in America.Extensive interviews with Serkin's friends and students are an important fixture of the book. The book concludes with a discography by Paul Farber that documents an essential part of Serkin's achievement.

Rosamond Lehmann's only autobiographical work recreates the events that shaped her life--from childhood to motherhood to the death of her daughter Rosamond Lehmann was born during a violent February thunderstorm and lived a sheltered, privileged life with her parents, brother, and sisters. Later, she recounts the tragedy that rocked her world as a mother. A blackbird with a broken neck appears as a harbinger of doom: A few hours after finding the bird, Lehmann receives a phone call from her son telling her that her twenty-four-year-old daughter, Sally, is dead. Wracked with grief and desperate for answers, Lehmann, a non-believer, finds solace in spiritualism. Beginning with an examination of Lehmann's singular childhood featuring cherished friends and pets, and concluding with an extraordinary letter to her granddaughter Anna, TheSwan in the Evening is about the search for peace and acceptance--and finding hope in the face of unbearable loss.
