Alex King, Famous Fourth Grader
Alex King is about to enter the fourth grade. With a little brother who speaks only in rhymes, a dad who is constantly singing and making up ridiculous words to songs, a mom who is a compulsive cleaner, and a dog who hides his food all over the house, Alex gets the impulse to be a little crazy himself. Without even trying, Alex begins a school-wide fashion trend. In a surprising twist, Alex finds himself on the evening news and, as a result finds fame and glory.

Alex Da Corte
Unpacking the popular culture, fine art and Americana references at the heart of Da Corte's Rubber Pencil Devil, on the occasion of his new Glenstone commissionThis volume accompanies Venezuelan American artist Alex Da Corte's (born 1980) ambitious 2025 presentation at Glenstone Museum. It marks the first installation of Rubber Pencil Devil (Hell House) (2022), a 17-foot-tall neon-covered house commissioned by Glenstone that holds Da Corte's groundbreaking video work Rubber Pencil Devil (2018), originally presented at the 57th Carnegie International. At nearly three hours long, the video is composed of 57 vignettes that reflect on the concept of "America" through uncanny, tender and at times violent scenes. Including previously unpublished archival documents alongside comprehensive new photographs of costumes, props and installations, this volume marks the first in-depth study of Rubber Pencil Devil. Ingrid Schaffner and David Getsy expand upon Da Corte's artistic trajectory over the past two decades, while author Simon Wu uses the artwork as a point of creative departure for an original piece of fiction.

Scandalous Times
We live in scandalous times. Every day some new controversy demands our attention, our emotional investment, and, ultimately, our judgment. Many of these routine transgressions will be understood in ‘revelatory’ terms, as peeling back the multiple layers of artifice and spin to reveal an underlying, and oftentimes disturbing, ‘truth’. Otherswill be recognized as calculated marketing exercises that simply present the strategic face of contemporary capitalism. Yet these ‘ordinary’ scandals can themselves be seen to be largely derivative of another, altogether more fundamental—and fundamentally rare—form of disruption. Such is the real scandal that accompanies instances of authentic creation. Building on the philosophy of Alain Badiou, Scandalous Times not only argues the case for such ‘real scandal’, but also shows how it is today being abrogated and substituted through the increasing production of novel forms of state-sanctioned controversy. From Duchamp to Donald Trump, Scandalous Times explores the ways in which areas from art and advertising to politics and social media have come to actively contribute to this ‘static’ fabrication of controversy, all the while arguing for the need to rethink creativity as a radical exception to the state, and not its proxy.

Another Kyoto
Another Kyoto is an insider's meditation on the hidden wonders of Japan's most enigmatic city. Drawing on decades living in Kyoto, and on lore gleaned from artists, Zen monks and Shinto priests, Alex Kerr illuminates the simplest things - a temple gate, a wall, a sliding door - in a new way. 'A rich book of intimate proportions ... In Kyoto, facts and meaning are often hidden in plain sight. Kerr's gift is to make us stop and cast our eyes upward to a temple plaque, or to squint into the gloom of an abbot's chamber' Japan Times'Kerr and Sokol have performed a minor miracle by presenting that which is present in Kyoto as that which we have yet to see. I know that I will never pass a wall, or tread a floor, or sit on tatami the same way again' Kyoto Journal

Art and Philosophy
Though a field often thought far from the center of contemporary philosophy, philosophy of art—perhaps more than any other field similarly situated—nevertheless enjoys extensive overlap with and points of exchange at that center. The last decade has seen a marked resurgence of interest in aesthetics and philosophy of art from those working outside these areas, and a reciprocal resurgence of interest in other subfields from philosophers of art. Art and Philosophy brings together twenty-one original essays at the intersection of art and philosophy. These essays are intersectional in two respects. Firstly, the authors draw meaningful connections between art and philosophy, using artworks to motivate, support, and shape their views. Secondly, the authors draw connections between the theoretical discipline of aesthetics and philosophy of art, on the one hand, and the rest of philosophy, on the other. Some chapters explore philosophical matters by examining art and other aesthetic objects, whilst others bring together contemporary thought and research in aesthetics and philosophy of art with important developments in other areas of philosophy. The chapters are organized into ten sections. These ten sections represent the current issues best exemplifying the productive and informative exchanges that exist at these intersections. The topics range from metaphysics and philosophy of language to creativity and love. By placing the connection to art at the forefront, Art and Philosophy is a testament to the myriad ways art and the philosophy of art intersect and overlap with issues that lie at the core of contemporary philosophy.
