Transports of Delight
This book is a feast for the nose! Transports of Delight is a celebration through verse of man’s extraordinary sensory world of smell, connecting East and West. Here is a fascinating and delightful anthology, drawn from around the world and across the millennia, capturing a kaleidoscope of emotions, moods and memories, all of which are energized and enhanced by smells of every kind – ‘smells which match our moods, promote our passions, provoke a sense of awe in the natural world around us, and bring us closer to our gods’. The anthology, containing over a hundred poems and excerpts from literature including The Teachings of the Buddha and Ben Johnson’s intoxicating ‘Drink to me only with thine eyes’ (Ode to Celia), takes the reader from Japan to China, Tibet and the East Indies, on to India and the Levant, then to Europe and finally to the Americas. Transports of Delight will certainly help transport and delight the reader to another level of sensory pleasure – far removed from today’s audio-visual world of ipods, televisions, CDs and DVDs!

Black Founders
This work turns our assumption that the convicts who came to Australia were all white upside down. It is a great read - Cassandra Pybus is a wonderful storyteller. It picks up on an area of great and growing interest, as seen through the success of Inga Clendinnen's ""Dancing With Strangers"", Kate Grenville's ""The Secret River"", and Tom Keneally's ""Commonwealth of Thieves"". In this compelling new book, distinguished historian and writer, Cassandra Pybus, reveals that black convicts were among our first fleet settlers - a fact which profoundly complicates our understanding of race relations in early colonial Australia. Most of these black founders were originally slaves from America who had sought freedom with the British during the American Revolution only to find themselves abandoned and unemployed in England when the war was over. Pybus' stories include the notorious runaway ""Black Caesar"", who became our first bushranger, and the wonderfully subversive Billie Blue, who was the first ferryman on Sydney Harbour, after whom Blues Point is named.

Greek Fictional Letters
The text explores a relatively unfamiliar and under-appreciated area of Greek literature, imaginary letters written between about 100 BC and 500 AD. They are imaginary or fictional either because both writer and recipient are invented, or because they are attributed to real historical characters. In the latter group, the real authors are unknown, whereas we know at least the names of those in the first group. Letter writing, real and fictional, was an important activity in this period, which was also the time that the sophists or professional rhetoricians were very influential in the political and educational life particularly of the Greek east. Many of the authors were sophists practising their skills, especially in character portrayal. This selection opens a window on an attractive, lively, and often amusing area in the history of Greek prose. All the letters are translated, and the commentaries provide both grammatical help and background information.

Creatures of Darkness
More than any other writer, Raymond Chandler (1888-1959) is responsible for raising detective stories from the level of pulp fiction to literature. Chandler's hard-boiled private eye Philip Marlowe set the standard for rough, brooding heroes who managed to maintain a strong sense of moral conviction despite a cruel and indifferent world.Chandler's seven novels, including The Big Sleep (1939) and The Long Goodbye (1953), with their pessimism and grim realism, had a direct influence on the emergence of film noir. Chandler worked to give his crime novels the flavor of his adopted city, Los Angeles, which was still something of a frontier town, rife with corruption and lawlessness. In addition to novels, Chandler wrote short stories and penned the screenplays for several films, including Double Indemnity (1944) and Strangers on a Train (1951). His work with Billy Wilder and Alfred Hitchcock on these projects was fraught with the difficulties of collaboration between established directors and an author who disliked having to edit his writing on demand.Creatures of Darkness is the first major biocritical study of Chandler in twenty years. Gene Phillips explores Chandler's unpublished script for Lady in the Lake, examines the process of adaptation of the novel Strangers on a Train, discusses the merits of the unproduced screenplay for Playback, and compares Howard Hawks's director's cut of The Big Sleep with the version shown in theaters. Through interviews he conducted with Wilder, Hitchcock, Hawks, and Edward Dmytryk over the past several decades, Phillips provides deeper insight into Chandler's sometimes difficult personality.Chandler's wisecracking Marlowe has spawned a thousand imitations. Creatures of Darkness lucidly explains the author's dramatic impact on both the literary and cinematic worlds, demonstrating the immeasurable debt that both detective fiction and the neo-noir films of today owe to Chandler's stark vision.

Erwin Piscator's Political Theatre
This 1977 text was the first full study of Erwin Piscator, the German theatrical producer who was prominent in the 1920s and worked after 1945 with the writers Hochhuth, Kipphardt and Weiss. Professor Innes sketches the background of Dadaism and Expressionism from which Piscator came, and points out the differences between Piscator and the other experimenters of his time. He also gives a vivid description of Piscator's technical innovations, the modern means of communication such as film, the illumination of the stage from below and 'the treadmill', a flat moving band along which the characters walked. These turned drama into a multi-media event. Professor Innes uses Piscator's career as a focus to describe theatrical developments in the twentieth century and to discuss the role of the author, the director, and the actor in drama, the purpose of the theatre, and the involvement of the audience.

Principal Doctrines and The Letter to Menoeceus (Greek and English, with Supplementary Essays)
Epicurus's Principal Doctrines and his Letter to Menoeceus are presented in this excellent edition which includes multiple translations, the original Greek, plus supplementary essays on Epicureanism by respected scholars. In the 3rd century B.C. Epicurus became renowned for developing a system of moral and social philosophy which was popular during ancient times. Epicureanism underwent a resurgence among intellectuals, scholars and Christian believers during the Enlightenment era. A prodigious author during his lifetime, tragically most of the works Epicurus wrote are lost, with only a handful of texts remaining extant for study in the present day. Epicurus advocated a peaceful existence defined by modest living; cultivation of inner peace and fearlessness; surrounding oneself in personal tranquility with worthy friends and family members as good company; and the observation of justice.

Filibuster
Wyndham Lewis, as writer and painter, was one of the great creative geniuses of this century and also one of the most neglected. A large part of the cause of that neglect has been the enduring distrust of Lewis’s political thinking, which has been greatly misunderstood and misrepresented. A leading intellectual in an age of intellectuals, Lewis was outspoken in praise and criticism, and, swimming against the mood of the times, became wrongly identified with the Fascist cause. Yet the truth is that there is no convenient political label to pin on Wyndham Lewis, for he was too much of an individualist ever to espouse a cause. D. G. Bridson, a close friend of Wyndham Lewis in the latter part of his life, has examined critically the evolution of Lewis’s ideas over some thirty years of writing. The Filibuster is an attempt to convey the changing, overall pattern of his political thinking, to clear away the misunderstandings and allow us to assess Lewis more truly both as a man and an artist, in the historical context of his times, the turbulent years between 1920 and 1950.
