Salads for Good
Salads for Good is the second instalment of the Cook for Good library, following the phenomenal success of our first cookbook, Soup for Good. Those who bought Soup for Good told us they loved the way it combined easy-to-cook and delicious-to-eat recipes with people’s moving personal histories. So, knowing that our community had many more recipes and stories to share, we’re following it up with a salad-focused book which proves that healthy doesn’t have to mean boring. Salads for Good features more than 70 salads, dressings and toppings, including donated recipes from Jamie Oliver, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Claudia Winkleman and other Cook for Good supporters. Some are on the lighter side, others are chunky enough for a full meal; but they’re all bursting with flavour and goodness, and perfect for sharing with family and friends. They also offer new and inventive ways to use accessible ingredients that readers might already have in their store cupboards and fridges. Additionally, the book includes moving stories from much-loved characters from our community, interwoven throughout. They speak about their connections with food, the power of communal cooking, and how focusing on health and wellbeing has changed their lives. Salads for Good is a high-quality, full-colour hardback book with a beautiful photo for every recipe. Chapters include: · Plant powered salads packed with veg and flavour · Grain and bean salads to keep you going all day · Cheese topped salads full of creamy richness · Carb boosted salads that are deliciously filling · Protein rich salads that you can tweak to suit your guests · Dip based salads for an exciting two-in-one option · Dressings and toppings that add punch and crunch Salads for Good proves once and for all that salads deserve a central place at your table. And, as all the profits from the book will be invested into our community programme, it is a fabulous feel-good, do-good read.

Gastronomy; or, The School for Good Living
The art of the chef and the appreciation of good food have been with us since time immemorial, as this work delightfully demonstrates. Dedicating the book to 'professors of culinary science in the United Kingdom', the anonymous author sets out to trace developments 'from the age of pounded acorns to the refinements of modern luxury'. The style is irresistibly extravagant, with vocabulary to match, introducing the reader to the concept of the 'theogastrophilist': one who makes his belly his god. This vividly enjoyable exploration of the pleasures of eating begins its account in ancient Greece, and then embarks on a culinary journey through European history, featuring the fourteenth-century French cook Taillevent, the recipe collection Le viandier that was credited to him, and John Evelyn's 1699 vegetarian treatise Acetaria. Of universal appeal, the work was first published in 1814, and ran to a second edition in 1822, which is reissued here.

Good Faith and Truthful Ignorance
Good Faith and Truthful Ignorance uncovers from history the fascinating and strange story of Spanish explorer Francisco Noguerol de Ulloa. in 1556, accompanied by his second wife, Francisco returned to his home in Spain after a profitable twenty-year sojourn in the new world of Peru. However, unlike most other rich conquistadores who returned to the land of their birth, Francisco was not allowed to settle into a life of leisure. Instead, he was charged with bigamy and illegal shipment of silver, was arrested and imprisoned. Francisco’s first wife (thought long dead) had filed suit in Spain against her renegade husband. So begins the labyrinthine legal tale and engrossing drama of an explorer and his two wives, skillfully reconstructed through the expert and original archival research of Alexandra Parma Cook and Noble David Cook. Drawing on the remarkable records from the trial, the narrative of Francisco’s adventures provides a window into daily life in sixteenth-century Spain, as well as the mentalité and experience of conquest and settlement of the New World. Told from the point of view of the conquerors, Francisco’s story reveals not only the lives of the middle class and minor nobility but also much about those at the lower rungs of the social order and relations between the sexes. In the tradition of Carlo Ginzberg’s The Cheese and the Worms and Natalie Zemon Davis’ The Return of Martin Guerre, Good Faith and Truthful Ignorance illuminates an historical period—the world of sixteenth-century Spain and Peru—through the wonderful and unusual story of one man and his two wives.

Gennaro's Cucina
In an era of excessive convenience and disposable food waste, Gennaro’s Cucina could not come at a better time – you will learn how to use simple ingredients in inventive ways, eat seasonally, spend less and, ultimately, eat better. ‘Cucina povera’ is the food that traditionally fed the poor of Italy yet remains the basis of most Italian dishes we love to eat today. It’s a simple philosophy – delicious, hearty meals using accessible and affordable ingredients. Encouraging an ethos of zero waste, Gennaro’s Cucina ensures that every part of the ingredient, and your budget, is put to good culinary use. Along with the majority of post-war Italian families, a young Gennaro was raised on a diet harvested on a limited budget. Restricted choice of scarce ingredients meant they learnt the value what they had, how to cook dishes lovingly and use imaginative methods of preservation to make simple dishes go far: including salting, drying and curing. In this inspirational cookbook, Gennaro takes you on a culinary journey of regional basic Italian staples and turns them into beautiful meals. With tips and ideas of what to do with leftovers, Gennaro helps home cooks squeeze maximum use from the ‘cucina povera’ ethos, turning humble ingredients into nourishing feasts without taste sacrifice. From Sicilian chickpea fritters to lentil soups and bread salads – to more elaborate filled vegetables, delicious ‘poor-man’s’ ricotta dumplings and simple sweet biscotti, this book will transform the way you shop, cook and eat. Cannon Hall Farm Cookbook
With Cannon Hall Farm's first cookbook, Richard Nicholson, the regularly-watched cook of the family, brings together their favourite recipes using seasonal ingredients from the Farm, alongside stories and memories associated with the dishes.A hardback, beautifully photographed feast of the seasons, The Cannon Hall Farm Cookbook shares stories, family recipes and tempting dishes for every time of the year from the Nicholson farming calendar.Richard says:Food has been a huge part of mine, and my family's journey. Food is about search and discovery. Food is reward for curiosity. It is inspiration and enlightenment. Food has the power to transport us back through the decades. Smells, tastes and recipes can bring back people, places, and experiences from the past in vivid technicolour. At Cannon Hall Farm, we believe that food can be therapy. That the simplest of pleasures can be the most memorable and worthwhile. We all love sharing our family recipes, and writing this book has brought back memories of people who are no longer with us, but who have played a precious part in our journey. There's nothing quite so evocative as food, and all families that love good food will have a well-thumbed, and much-loved recipe book. This is ours. This book is a journey into our family folklore, with tales from the past, alongside recipes that we've grown to love. A celebration of the dishes mum loved to cook when we were kids, through to the dishes inspired by her, and other friends and family, and on to those that I love to cook today. I hope this recipe book becomes food splattered, and dog eared, in the way that the best cookery books do. I hope that ragged pieces of paper, and hastily written notes nestle within its pages - bookmarks on your own food journey. I hope it becomes loved in the way we have loved the family and friends who played their part in it.

Diet For A Dead Planet
If we are what we eat, then, as Christopher D. Cook contends in this powerful look at the food industry, we are not in good shape. The facts speak for themselves: more than 75 million Americans suffered from food poisoning last year, and 5,000 of them died; 67 percent of American males are overweight, obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States and supersizing is just the tip of the iceberg: the way we make and eat food today is putting our environment and the very future of food at risk.Diet for a Dead Planet takes us beyond Fast Food Nation to show how our entire food system is in crisis. Corporate control of farms and supermarkets, unsustainable drives to increase agribusiness productivity and profits, misplaced subsidies for exports, and anemic regulation have all combined to produce a grim harvest. Food, our most basic necessity, has become a force behind a staggering array of social, economic, and environmental epidemics.Yet there is another way. Cook argues cogently for a whole new way of looking at what we eat—one that places healthy, sustainably produced food at the top of the menu for change. In the words of Jim Hightower, “If you eat, read this important book!”
