Aidan, Bede, Cuthbert
In this rousing book, David Adam celebrates the lives and interweaving stories of Aidan, Bede and Cuthbert. Recalling, in a personal introduction, his ordination to the pastoral ministry in Durham Cathedral (the burial place of Bede and Cuthbert) and his thirteen years as Vicar of the Holy Island of Lindisfarne (where Aidan lived), the author communicates clearly his appreciation of these three great saints. They have much to teach us, he believes, about vision – about expanding our spiritual awareness and deepening our love for God. St Aidan was Irish by birth and was a monk at Iona long before being selected as the first Bishop of Lindisfarne in 635. In time became pastor to all of Northumbria. St Bede the Venerable was born in 673 near Sunderland, and was a monk at Jarrow on the Tyne. He is revered for his scholarly output of commentaries on the Scriptures and his famous Ecclesiastical History of the English People, which is such an important source of our knowledge of the development of Christianity in BritainSt Cuthbert, when he was sixteen, received a vision of the soul of St Aidan being carried to heaven by angels. This vision may have convinced him to enter holy orders at Melrose where he became Prior. Later, having lived for some time as a hermit on the island of Farne, he was later reluctantly persuaded to became Bishop of Lindisfarne in 685.

Bede's Latin Poetry
Although his historical and exegetical works are better known, Bede's small corpus of Latin poetry was widely read and imitated throughout the Middle Ages. Yet in spite of its importance as a keystone in medieval Latin literature, there has not previously been an attempt to collect and edit this corpus of verse in light of all the surviving manuscript evidence. Bede's Latin Poetry is the first edition of his poetic corpus based on all surviving manuscripts. Itincludes new editions of his two major poems, the 'Verses on Judgement Day' (Versus de die iudicii) and the metrical 'Life of St Cuthbert' (Vita metrica S. Cudbercti), and also includes reconstructions of his two other poetic collections - a book of epigrams and a book of hymns - which were not preservedintact during the Middle Ages and which have had to be assembled from various disparate sources. The editions of all these works are provided with translations and detailed notes, revealing Bede's debts to earlier poets, and illustrating his remarkable skill in understanding the intricacies of Latin verse composition. A series of appendices discuss and print many other poems which have been erroneously attributed to Bede by earlier editors, and include the first edition of a hitherto unknownearly draft of his metrical 'Life of St Cuthbert'.

Two Lives of St. Cuthbert
These two complementary lives of Cuthbert illuminate both the secular history of the golden age of Northumbria and the historic shift from Celtic to Roman ecclesiastical practice which took place after the Synod of Whitby. Cuthbert was very much in the Irish monastic tradition. He adopted Roman usages, becoming prior and eventually bishop of Lindisfarne, but the essential nature of his commitment changed little and he lived for much of his later life as a hermit on the island of Farne, with the birds as his only companions. The two lives make an interesting contrast: the earlier, anonymous Life of 698–705 is clear, concise and rich in Lindisfarne tradition, viewing Cuthbert as no more than the great saint of his own house. Bede's prose Life of 721, however, is polished, literary, more than twice as long and altogether more didactic; treating Cuthbert as a model from which to draw lessons about how to be a perfect bishop and monk. Taken together, the lives vividly evoke the character of a remarkable churchman and provide a compelling picture of early monastic life.

Bede
This newest volume in a long-running work of mapping the sources of Anglo-Saxon literary culture in England from 500 to 1100 CE takes up one of the most important authors of the period, the eighth-century monk-scholar known as the Venerable Bede. Bede is best known as the author of the Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum, which is one of the key sources for our historical and cultural knowledge of the period; this collection covers that and more, drawing on manuscript evidence, medieval library catalogues, Anglo-Latin and Old English versions, citations, quotations, and more, putting Bede and his work in the context of his period.
