Illustrated WALDEN with Photographs from the Gleason Collection
This illustrated edition of Walden features 66 photographs by Herbert W. Gleason, one of the great American landscape photographers of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Gleason, who had a special love for what he called "the simple beauty of New England," became interested in Thoreau's work when commissioned in 1906 by the Houghton Mifflin Company to illustrate their edition of The Writings of Henry David Thoreau. With the help of the few surviving people who had known Thoreau, Gleason searched out the exact places Thoreau had described--all of them still looking much as they had when Thoreau knew them--and photographed them. Gleason became so interested in the project that he continued to photograph Thoreau country for more than forty years. Most of the photographs reproduced here were chosen by Gleason himself for an edition of Walden he planned but never published. Originally published in 1973. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Special Education in Context
Originally published in 1989, Special Education in Context is an important and thought-provoking book. An ethnographic study of five years in the daily lives of the severely and profoundly mentally retarded residents of a state school in the United States, it was unique in its attempt to interpret their experience in their own terms and from their own perspective. Professor Gleason's findings led him to argue forcefully for a change in the approach to developmental disability. Rather than being based on the imposition of criteria such as 'normality' and focusing on the clinical characteristics of populations with special needs, as was traditionally the case, therapeutic practice is reconfigured as being thoroughly grounded in an understanding of the populations' behaviour patterns. The book redefined the concepts of deinstitutionalisation, normalisation and mainstream which guided much practice and provided an innovative framework for future investigation and practice with special populations.

Conversations in Jazz
An extraordinary collection of revealing, personal interviews with fourteen jazz music legends During his nearly forty years as a music journalist, Ralph J. Gleason recorded many in-depth interviews with some of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. These informal sessions, conducted mostly in Gleason's Berkeley, California, home, have never been transcribed and published in full until now. This remarkable volume, a must-read for any jazz fan, serious musician, or musicologist, reveals fascinating, little-known details about these gifted artists, their lives, their personas, and, of course, their music. Bill Evans discusses his battle with severe depression, while John Coltrane talks about McCoy Tyner's integral role in shaping the sound of the Coltrane quartet, praising the pianist enthusiastically. Included also are interviews with Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Quincy Jones, Jon Hendricks, and the immortal Duke Ellington, plus seven more of the most notable names in twentieth-century jazz.
