Gregory Ghosts: Haunting Irishness
This book is a kind of Irish ghost story. In it the ghosts of Lady Augusta Gregory (1852-1932) and eight of her family members and colleagues look back over their lives—and sometimes forward beyond them—to try to make sense of them, their times, and one another. Theirs were all turbulent lives played out on the western edge of Europe at a time of great change. Lady Gregory helped shape that change at a pivotal moment in Ireland’s development into a modern nation state. The author’s fresh approach questions and complicates the image of her as a prim Victorian workhorse. Setting her in the midst of the personal chatter of her departed family, lovers, friends, and collaborators brings home how the historical Irish moment found her just when it needed her. “Melding scholarship and creative work, Kevin Reilly’s Gregory Ghosts vividly explores the origins of the Irish Literary Revival through fictionalized—though scrupulously factual—narratives written in the voices of the major players. The presence of Lady Gregory herself, in all her ambition and contradictions, shines through all of the lives that Reilly has so imaginatively re-created here.” —James Silas Rogers, Editor Emeritus, New Hibernia Review “A fresh, vibrant, and fascinating contribution to the scholarly and popular literature on the Irish dramatic movement and the wider Irish Literary Renaissance.” — James Donnelly, Professor Emeritus of History, University of Wisconsin-Madison “This book captivated me by way of its engaging imaginative premise, its originality, and its attention to historical detail.” —Dr. Kay Martinovich, School of Theatre and Dance, Northern Illinois University

Lady Gregory and Irish National Theatre
This book is the first comprehensive critical assessment of the aesthetic and social ideals of Lady Augusta Gregory, founder, patron, director, and dramatist of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. It elaborates on her distinctive vision of the social role of a National Theatre in Ireland, especially in relation to the various reform movements of her age: the Pre-Raphaelite Movement, the Co-operative Movement, and the Home Industries Movement. It illustrates the impact of John Ruskin on the aesthetic and social ideals of Lady Gregory and her circle that included Horace Plunkett, George Russell, John Millington Synge, William Butler Yeats, and George Bernard Shaw. All of these friends visited the celebrated Gregory residence of Coole Park in Country Galway, most famously Yeats. The study thus provides a pioneering evaluation of Ruskin’s immense influence on artistic, social, and political discourse in Ireland in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.

Register of Pope Gregory VII 1073-1085
This text presents a complete translation of the Register of Pope Gregory VII (1073-1085), one of the greatest and most vigorous of all the popes and makers of European and world history. The Register survives as Registrum Vaticanum 2 in the Vatican Archives; its some 390 items are divided into nine books. It is generally accepted as being an "original" Register - a working record of the papal entourage into which, for the most part, outgoing letters and other documents were copied in small batches soon after they were drafted Many of the letters were of Gregory's own dictation and therefore offer insight into his powerful personality and distinctive ideas. They are a prime source for assessing his reforming aims and methods which prepared the way for the papal monarchy of the later Middle Ages. They illustrate his dealings with the European rulers of his time, such as Henry IV of Germany, with whom he had a famous meeting at Canossa, and William the Conqueror, whom he viewed with critical regard. His part in preparing the way for the Crusade should be of particular interest.

Life of Gregory Zilboorg, 1940–1959
The Life of Gregory Zilboorg, 1940–1959: Mind, Medicine, and Man is the second volume of a meticulously researched two-part biography of the Russian-American psychoanalyst Gregory Zilboorg and chronicles the impact of the Second World War on his work and thinking as well as his divorce, remarriage, and conversion to Catholicism. With extensive references to Zilboorg’s writing and politics, this book demonstrates the significance of his contributions to the fields of psychiatry and psychoanalysis in the context of his tumultuous intellectual, personal, and spiritual life. In his late work, he would argue, controversially, that there was no incompatibility between psychoanalysis and religion. Grounded in a wealth of primary source material and impressive research, this book completes the compelling biography of a major figure in psychoanalysis. It will be of interest to general readers as well as scholars across a range of disciplines, particularly the history of psychoanalysis and religion.

Joy Gregory
This stunning exhibition catalog offers a groundbreaking retrospective of Joy Gregory’s four-decade career, providing an in-depth exploration of her contributions to contemporary art.Generously illustrated with 200 color images, this book presents a comprehensive collection of Gregory’s most iconic works, alongside rarely seen and newly commissioned pieces. Organized to coincide with a major retrospective exhibition at London’s Whitechapel Gallery, the catalog spans her career, from her early analogue photography to her innovative use of digital media, video, textiles, and installation.Gregory’s approach to art is characterized by a striking ability to catch flies with honey—to engage with complex and often difficult topics such as post-colonialism, beauty, and identity through works that captivate with their nuance and visual allure. Her use of beauty and craftsmanship draws viewers into deeper contemplation of histories of the transatlantic slave trade, language endangerment, and the diasporic experience.Insightful essays by leading scholars explore these themes and situate Gregory’s work within the broader context of contemporary British and international art. A thought-provoking conversation with Deborah Willis delves into the importance of archives in preserving marginalized histories. Perfect for those interested in contemporary art, photography, and the intersection of culture, activism, and identity, this monograph is both a visual treasure and a vital resource for understanding Joy Gregory’s profound influence on the cultural landscape.

This work provides a concise and accessible introduction to the thought of the early church father Gregory of Nyssa with translations of key selections of his writings. Anthony Meredith presents a diverse range of Gregory's writings: his contribution to the debates of the period about the nature of God in argument with a form of extreme Arianism; his discussion of the nature and work of the Holy Ghost, against the so-called "Spirit fighters"; his defence of the humanity of Christ against those who denied it (notably Apollinarius); and the nature of fate and other philosophical issues.

Earliest Life of Gregory the Great
In his role of apostle of the English and promoter of Augustine's mission, Gregory the Great became the subject of what is one of the earliest pieces of literature surviving from the Anglo-Saxon period: a Life written by an unknown author at Whitby around 680–704. Although crude in its latinity and idiosyncratic in its presentation, this work is a fascinating source of early traditions about the conversion of the English - including the famous story of Gregory's encounter with the Anglian slave boys - and an important witness to the veneration felt for the saint himself. It casts valuable light on English history in the seventh century, particularly on the career of Edwin of Northumbria, and is the source of two of the most famous legends of the Middle Ages, the Mass of St Gregory and the story of Trajan's rescue from hell. The Life of Gregory seems to be the earliest of the Saints' lives of this period and it is in many ways the most remarkable.
