Mexico Faces the 21st Century
As Mexico approaches the 21st century, its problems seem to be rapidly overwhelming its prospects. Only a short time ago, with the passage of NAFTA, it appeared ready to catapult out of underdevelopment into the ranks of the industrialized countries. Then came 1994, the year of living dangerously, and suddenly Mexico appeared dangerously close to the brink of wholesale disintegration. What went wrong? And what are the prospects for the future? In Mexico Faces the 21st Century, a distinguished group of veteran Mexico watchers analyze the roots of the crisis and the outlook for political stability democratization, socioeconomic development, and U.S.-Mexican relations.Among the subjects addressed are: the crisis of the Salinas years, the changing nature of the political system, the relations between the PRI and the opposition, the internal conflicts within the PRI, the emerging power of the narcotraffickers, the role of civil society, labor and the military, the Chiapas uprising, NAFTA, the current economic crisis, illegal migration, the U.S.-Mexican borderlands, and U.S.-Mexican national security issues. Though the prognosis is for a troubled future, the outlook is by no means hopeless: political violence and socioeconomic turmoil will continue, and relations with the United States will be more conflictual than anticipated. But Mexico will probably be able to avoid a full-scale revolutionary upheaval and will continue what is likely to be a long and difficult transition to democracy.

Critical Introduction to Twentieth-Century American Drama: Volume 2, Williams, Miller, Albee
This is the second volume in Christopher Bigsby's critical history of the important American dramatists and theatrical movements in the twentieth-century. Volume 1 brought the story to 1940 and included the last plays of O'Neill. In two further volumes Dr Bigsby covers the period from 1940 onwards. In Volume 2 he steps aside from the strict chronological progression to consider at length and in detail the achievement of the three great playwrights who dominate the post-war scene and who have earned an international reputation: Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller and Edward Albee. All three brought to the Broadway Theatre (discussed separately in Volume 3) a strong degree of moral seriousness and aesthetic sensitivity. Dr Bigsby gives a full account of the early unpublished plays and the major works by each playwright, drawing on biographical detail and political background to illuminate his reading of the plays, which are illustrated by photographs of important productions.

Agility Factor
A research-based approach to achieving long-term profitability in business What does it take to guarantee success and profitability over time? Authors Christopher G. Worley, a senior research scientist, Thomas D. Williams, an executive advisor, and Edward E. Lawler III, one of the country's leading management experts, set out to find the answer. In The Agility Factor: Building Adaptable Organizations for Superior Performance the authors reveal the factors that drive long-term profitability based on the practices of successful companies that have consistently outperformed their peers. Of the 234 large companies across 18 industries that were studied, there were few companies that delivered sustained performance across the board. The authors found that across industries, the most successful companies were not the "usual suspects" found in the media, but companies who possessed a quiet agility that allowed them to quickly perceive and respond to changes so that they could continue to grow. Agility gives organizations the ability to adapt to fluctuations in the environment, test possible responses, and implement changes quickly. This book offers specific, research-based case studies to help organizational leaders use agility to achieve sustained profitability and performance while also becoming more adaptable to a changing marketplace. For executives, leaders, consultants, board members and all those responsible for the long-term health of organizations, this insightful guide outlines: The components of agility for business organizationsHow to successfully build agility within an organizationHow agility has its foundation in good management practicesHow to use agility to gain a competitive advantage in the marketplace
