Artist Eugene J. Martin's Secret Hieroglyphs
When Eugene Martin couldn't afford drawing paper in the mid-1970', he would make pen and ink drawings on paper napkins. A hieroglyphic archetype would suddenly appear. He would later incorporate many of these napkin drawings in mixed media collages in the late 1980's and 1990's in Washington D.C. and Lafayette LA. Other secret languages were written down with graphite pencil and pen & ink on regular paper. These artworks can also be viewed at http://youtube.com/nemastoma. Mirror for Lovers
A Mirror for Lovers: Shake-speare’s Sonnets as Curious Perspective, by William F. Zak, seeks to identify in Shake-speare’e sonnet sequence the structural and thematic features of the satirical tradition born in Plato’s Symposium. Through this study, Zak traces the power of an idea to endure, re-animate, and enrich itself through time: Plato’s discrimination of the true nature of love in The Symposium. Born anew in its medieval reincarnations (The Romance of the Rose, The Vita Nuova, and The Canzoniere of Petrarch), the tradition begun in Plato’s Symposium was then resuscitated in the Elizabethan sonnet sequence revival, most notably in Shake-speare’s Sonnets. With extended examination of all the texts in the Q manuscript, A Mirror for Lovers makes a case for the mutually illuminating relationship among the sonnets to the fair young man and the dark lady, “A Lover’s Complaint,” and the mysterious dedication that until now have never received attention as an integral symbolic matrix of meaning.

Horror of Philosophy
Zer0 Books presents a new, omnibus edition of a cult classic: all three volumes of Eugene Thackers Horror of Philosophytrilogy, revised and expanded by the author. Across the three volumes of the series Thacker adopts a unique approach, reading works of horror as if they were philosophy, and works of philosophy as if they were horror, leading to far-reaching questions: Could it be that the more we know about the world, the less we understand it? Could it be that, while everything has been explained, nothing has meaning? At the center of Thackers project is the idea of the 'world without us,'an increasingly unthinkable world of planetary disasters, emerging pandemics, and the looming threat of extinction. To confront this idea is to confront the limit of our ability to understand the world in which we live -not a philosophy of horror, but a horror of philosophy.

Searching in St. Andrews
A compelling journey through the heart and soul of golf, bringing the sport's history and the current state of the game to life When Sean Zak arrived in St. Andrews, Scotland—the mecca of golf—he was determined to spend his summer in search of the game's true essence. He found it everywhere—in the dirt, firm and proper, a sandy soil that you don't see in America. He found it in the people who inherited the game from their grandparents, who inherited it from their grandparents. He found it in the structures that prop up the game—cheap memberships and “private courses” that aren’t private at all. At every turn he also found LIV Golf, the Saudi-backed entity which descended on the professional circuit during that summer of the 150th Open Championship. Zak's personal personal pilgrimage now offered him a front-row seat at a cultural reckoning, one which pitted the game's longstanding customs against a divisive new force.Searching in St. Andrews is the vivid chronicle of an unforgettable sojourn in the birthplace of golf, informed by sublime mornings on the Old Course playing with just four clubs, evenings spent analyzing legal documents riddled with greed, and the singular characters he encountered along the way. Readers will meet a 92-year-old who just learned how to putt, explore the many differences between Golf Over There and Golf Over Here, and even experience caddying on the PGA Tour, from deciphering the yardage books to keeping your player on time to drinking until sunrise after you’ve missed the cut.Written with heartfelt curiosity and charm, this is an essential portrait of golf amid the crosswinds of tradition, progress, and power.

Annotated Drawings by Eugene J. Martin: 1977-1978
This publication includes reproductions of forty-three graphite pencil drawings created by visual artist Eugene James Martin (1938-2005) in 1977 and 1978 in Washington D.C. Martin referred to these drawings as "satirical abstracts". The accompanying quotes by Eugene Martin date from the mid-1970's. The drawings that initially accompanied the present aphorisms were accidentally lost in the early 1980's in Washington D.C. These drawings and the quotes had been included in a special "chapbook"; however, someone borrowed Eugene Martin's chapbook and misplaced it, never to be seen again. A new choice of drawings provided here substitutes the original imagery. Most of the drawings measure about 8 x 10 inch. Additional drawings and artworks by E.J. Martin can be viewed at http://youtube.com/nemastoma. The site http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugene_J._Martin provides links to other Martin works as well.

Moral Markets
Like nature itself, modern economic life is driven by relentless competition and unbridled selfishness. Or is it? Drawing on converging evidence from neuroscience, social science, biology, law, and philosophy, Moral Markets makes the case that modern market exchange works only because most people, most of the time, act virtuously. Competition and greed are certainly part of economics, but Moral Markets shows how the rules of market exchange have evolved to promote moral behavior and how exchange itself may make us more virtuous. Examining the biological basis of economic morality, tracing the connections between morality and markets, and exploring the profound implications of both, Moral Markets provides a surprising and fundamentally new view of economics--one that also reconnects the field to Adam Smith's position that morality has a biological basis. Moral Markets, the result of an extensive collaboration between leading social and natural scientists, includes contributions by neuroeconomist Paul Zak; economists Robert H.Frank, Herbert Gintis, Vernon Smith (winner of the 2002 Nobel Prize in economics), and Bart Wilson; law professors Oliver Goodenough, Erin O'Hara, and Lynn Stout; philosophers William Casebeer and Robert Solomon; primatologists Sarah Brosnan and Frans de Waal; biologists Carl Bergstrom, Ben Kerr, and Peter Richerson; anthropologists Robert Boyd and Michael Lachmann; political scientists Elinor Ostrom and David Schwab; management professor Rakesh Khurana; computational science and informatics doctoral candidate Erik Kimbrough; and business writer Charles Handy.

Dimensions of Prejudice
This book argues that unreasonable dogmatic beliefs are expressions of socially structured patterns of prejudice. Specifically, prejudice is explained as being produced and dispersed within the confines of the political structures governing the manner in which material human needs are created and met. Classifying various dimensions of prejudice (philosophical, epistemological, psychological, sociological, political, and cultural), the book conceptualises the relation between dogmatic thinking and these facets of human existence. Criticising and comparing a wide range of theories and factual data relating to the growth and expression of prejudice, the book is a theoretical discussion of problems surrounding the production of cultural norms, the psychological effects of filial systems and relations between the sexes, the constitution of modern capitalist society, and elementary principles of political democracy. Drawing on feminism, whiteness studies, Marxist theories of racism and imperialism, psychoanalysis, critical theory, and cultural studies, the author examines the constraints placed upon individuals’, groups’, and nations’ propensity for scientific and rational thinking.

Paraganglionic Chemoreceptor System
One would rarely have the opportunity to augment his medical library with a more exhaustive examination of the subject matter than is contained herein. Would only that all areas of one's professional responsibilities be available in such a complete, didactic, written form. Having a decided interest in the subject of head and neck paragangliomas for the past decade, I have had the opportunity to explore the subject through published medical literature and personal investi gation, and feel qualified to commend Doctors Zak and Lawson on their dedica tion, accuracy, and thoroughness in this presentation. One seeking any particular aspect of knowledge from historical to an up-to-date concept on the subject of paragangliomas will find his answer here. Vincent J. Hyams CAPT MC USN Chairman, Otolaryngic Pathology Department Armed Forces Institute of Pathology Washington, D.C. Preface One of us (F.G.Z.) initially became interested in the paraganglionic system when as a resident in pathology at The Mount Sinai Hospital, he performed an autopsy on an elderly woman with an intracranial tumor of the posterior fossa, which extended through the jugular foramen into the neck in a dumbbell fashion.
