Spheres Public and Private
The coverage displayed here is predominantly on sub-Saharan literary production, and with a – perhaps systemic – focus on important aspects of political history and socio-political structures (including marxian analyses of the ‘public sphere’) and such crucial arenas as religious discipline, the tension between tradition and modernity, ecological awareness, family, and gender. Most of the discussions are traditionally content-oriented, but there are at least two essays (on Soyinka’s Aké and on Amma Darko’s The Housemaid) that attempt to come to grips narratologically with the medium of prose fiction itself. A quartet of essays with a more general purview – including a refreshing demontage of exclusive obeisance to (Western) écriture – is followed by a section on poets, some canonical, others emergent: Ogaga Ifowodo, Jack Mapanje, Olu Oguibe, Tanure Ojaide, Okot p’Bitek, Wole Soyinka, Ladé Wosornu. Essays on fiction cover general topics (women’s fiction; political writing in Nigeria; the nightmare of Biafra), and landmark texts both anglophone (Chinua Achebe, Amma Darko, Festus Iyayi, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, Wole Soyinka), francophone (Mariama Bâ, Mongo Beti, and Ousmane Sembène), and – a novum for Matatu – hispanophone (Donato Ndongo). The theatre section has essays on Ama Ata Aidoo, Zakes Mda, Anne Tanyi–Tang, Soyinka, and Ahmed Yerima, as well as Ngũgĩ and Mugo.We are especially pleased to be able to offer accomplished original poetry, short stories, and a complete drama text. Four comprehensive essay-reviews (on literary criticism, cinema, graphic art, and traditional African society) round out this issue.

Marchioness of Graham
Carrying commuters, day-trippers and holidaymakers, more than twenty steamers once served more than fifty piers on Scotland's River Clyde. This meticulously recorded Day Book provides an accurate account of the daily highs and lows at the height of the popularity of trips "Doon The Watter". It concentrates on the last season of the Graham, the last coalburner in the fleet, with strong Arran and Ayr connections, before she sailed away to a new life in Greece. Richard Orr attended the High School of Glasgow, then read classics and law at Glasgow University, serving as assistant purser on the River Clyde during eight summer vacations. His love of the River Clyde and its ships never left him, and he organised various educational charters in the later 1970s. In retirement, he maintains his varied interests including ships, travel and hillwalking. He lives with his wife June in the home of his birth in the south side of Glasgow and has two grown up children.

Modernism on Fleet Street
British modernism came of age at a time of great cultural anxiety about the state of journalism. The new newspapers, with their brief, flashy articles, striking visuals, hyperbolic headlines, and sensational news, stood at the center of debates about reading in the period, seeming to threaten the viability of representative democracy, the health and vitality of the language, and the very future of literature itself. Patrick Collier's study brings an impressive array of archival research to his exploration of modernism's relationship to the newspaper press. People who sought to make their way as writers could neither remain neutral on this issue nor abandon journalism, which offered an irreplaceable source of income and self-advertisement. Collier discusses five modern writers-T. S. Eliot, James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Rebecca West, and Rose Macaulay-showing how their work takes part in contemporary debates about journalism and examining the role journalism played in establishing their careers. In doing so, he uncovers tensions and contradictions inherent in the identity of the 'serious artist' who relied on the ephemeral forms of journalism for money and reputation.

Janitor's Sons
Astonishing, tear-jerking, and thought provoking! The Janitor's Sons is a chilling and extraordinary inside look at urban life in America, and its suburban contrast. Gregory Collier tells the incredible true story of two brothers raised amongst the broad spectrum of social classes in Detroit, Michigan, and its posh suburbs. It is a story of agony and ecstasy, crime and punishment, and choices that can impact one's entire life. Somewhere in America is a young black male capable of becoming president of the United States, or anything he desires. However, in an era when a college education is more important than ever, he might not graduate from high school. With The Janitor's Sons, Gregory Collier draws a line in the sand and declares, "black males must not fail in school or in life - America is too important!"
