Aaniiih/Gros Ventre Stories

Aaniiih (Gros Ventre) Language
The Aaniiih (Gros Ventre) Language is a tribally centered reference grammar of Aaniiih. A member of the Algonquian language family, Aaniiih is most closely related to the Arapaho language. Previously spoken in areas of central and southern Alberta and Saskatchewan and northern Montana, the language is now spoken on the Fort Belknap Reservation in north central Montana. Andrew Cowell and Terry Brockie worked with tribal members to retranscribe historical and archival documentation of the language in order to revitalize it. This grammar provides a comprehensive description of the language throughout all its stages, focusing on the phonology and morphology of new word formation; on levels of politeness in the language and strategies for indirectness; and on salient cultural topics such as place-names, personal names, prayer, and traditional narrative, as well as greetings, departures, and a rich variety of exclamations and interjections. This volume consists of invited lectures and seminars presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute "The Gamma Ray Sky with COMPTON GRO and SIGMA" , which was held at the Centre de Physique Theorique of Les Houches (France) in January / February 1994. The school has been planned by a Scientific Organizing Committee. It was organized with the aim of providing students and young researchers with an up-to-date account of the high-energy phenomena in the vicinity of compact objets and the diffuse gamma-ray backgrounds after the early results from the gamma-ray telescope SIGMA and the four instruments onboard COMPTON GRO (Gamma Ray Observatory) : BATSE (Burst and Transient Source Experiment),COMPTEL(Compto'l Telescope),EGRET (Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope) and OS SE(Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment) . It was attended by more than sixty researchers from many countries. The lectures and seminars represent a complete coverage of our present knowledge and understanding of: Gamma-ray backgrounds, Gamma-ray Burts,Active Galactic Nuclei,Galactic Compact Objects, Gamma-ray Spectroscopy, Instrumentation and observation techniques, etc ... Most of these lectures are reproduced in this volume. Unfortunately, a few lecturers have chosen not to submit their manuscript.

Rudolf Herzog (1869-1943) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller, Journalist, Dichter und Erz�hler. Herzog war zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts ein Bestseller-Autor, die meisten seiner B�cher erreichten Auflagen von mehreren Hunderttausend. Im September 1911 unternahm er eine Amerikareise zur Germanistic Society of America, auf welcher er das Ehrenband der Columbia University of New York verliehen bekam. Die Eindr�cke dieser Reise verarbeitete er in seinem 1915 erschienenen Buch "Das gro�e Heimweh", in dem er am Beispiel der deutschst�mmigen Amerikaner dazu aufrief, sich der Pionierrolle des Deutschtums auf der ganzen Welt bewusst zu sein.
