One Country, Two Systems in Crisis
In the tumultuous negotiations of the Sino-British Joint Declaration of 1984, the United Kingdom willingly signed over Hong Kong's reigns to the People's Republic of China, but with the presupposition that the PRC would faithfully implement the principle of 'one country, two systems' for the following fifty years. Yet since the handover in 1997, the PRC has failed to allow Hong Kong a higher degree of autonomy. 'One Country, Two Systems' in Crisis elucidates how China's intervention has curtailed Hong Kong's civil liberties; how freedom of speech is at the mercy of the government; and how deception has turned the 'Pearl of the Orient' into the rubber stamp of the Chinese Communist Party.

George Kennan and the Dilemmas of US Foreign Policy
One of a select group of American foreign service officers to receive specialized training on the Soviet Union in the late 1920s and early 1930s, George Frost Kennan eventually became the American government's chief expert on Soviet affairs during the height of the Cold War. Drawing upon a wealth of original research, David Mayers' fascinating life of George Kennan examines his high-level participation in foreign policy-making and interprets his political and philosophical development within a historical framework. Mayers presents an engaging and lucid account of Kennan's training; his rise to prominence during the late 1940s and his policy failures; and his later roles as critic of America's external policy, advocate of détente with the Soviet Union, and proponent of nuclear arms limitation. Mayers also explores Kennan's complicated relationships with such important political figures and analysts as Dean Acheson, John Foster Dulles, and Walter Lippmann.

Killing Kennedy
Startling new insights into the JFK assassination In Killing Kennedy: Exposing the Plot, the Cover-Up, and the Consequences, author Jack Roth interviews researchers, scholars, eyewitnesses, and family members of those who were part of the tangled web of US intelligence operations associated with the Cold War and the circumstances surrounding the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The author asks important questions, including why the assassination still matters today and what the lasting ripple effects have been since that fateful day. The Kennedy assassination represents one of the most impactful events in not only American but also world history, and this book represents an important addendum to understanding its enduring significance. On November 22, 1963, the duly elected president of the United States was murdered in cold blood, forever destroying "Camelot" and national optimism for world peace. Gleaning a "people's history" of the assassination through dozens of insightful and heartfelt interviews, Roth presents a riveting narrative by creating a respectful, well-crafted, and emotionally charged book from which both older and younger generations will gain a greater understanding of our nation's history and current status in the modern world.

Kennedy
Leading Kennedy scholars along with a group of younger historians have mined recently declassified documentation in order to reexamine many of the key issues surrounding JFK's time in the White House: Vietnam, Cuban missile crisis, Berlin crisis, space race, and others. Rejecting the idolatry and bitterness evident in so many previous works on JFK, this study adopts an evenhanded, eclectic approach. The result is a less caricatured, more compelling view of the Kennedy presidency.

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner Now?
The first comparative analysis of minority conservatismIn Guess Who's Coming to Dinner Now? Angela Dillard offers the first comparative analysis of a conservatism which today cuts across the boundaries of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality. To be an African-American and a conservative, or a Latino who is also a conservative and a homosexual, is to occupy an awkward and contested political position. Dillard explores the philosophies, politics, and motivation of minority conservatives such as Ward Connerly, Glenn Loury, Linda Chavez, Clarence Thomas, and Bruce Bawer, as well as their tepid reception by both the Left and Right. Welcomed cautiously by the conservative movement, they have also frequently been excoriated by those African Americans, Latinos, women, and homosexuals who view their conservatism as betrayal. Dillard's comprehensive study, among the first to take the history and political implications of multicultural conservatism seriously, is a vital source for understanding contemporary American conservatism in all its forms.

Coming to Terms with John F. Kennedy
Stephen F. Knott has spent his life grappling with the legacy of President John F. Kennedy: JFK was the first president Knott remembers, he worked for Ted Kennedy’s Senate campaign in 1976, and later he worked at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston. Moreover, Knott’s scholarly work on the American presidency has wrestled with Kennedy’s time in office and whether his presidency was ultimately a positive or negative one for the country. After initially being a strong Kennedy fan, Knott’s views began to sour during his time at the Library, eventually leading him to become a “Reagan Democrat.” The Trump presidency led Knott to revisit JFK, leading him once more to reconsider his views.Coming to Terms with John F. Kennedy offers a nuanced assessment of the thirty-fifth president, whose legacy and impact people continue to debate to this day. Knott examines Kennedy through the lens of five critical issues: his interpretation of presidential power, his approach to civil rights, and his foreign policy toward Cuba, the Soviet Union, and Vietnam. Knott also explores JFK’s assassination and the evolving interpretations of his presidency, both highly politicized subject matters. What emerges is a president as complex as the author’s shifting views about him.The passage of sixty years, from working in the Kennedy Library to a career writing about the American presidency, has given Knott a broader view of Kennedy’s presidency and allowed him to see how both the Left and the Right, and members of the Kennedy family, distorted JFK's record for their own purposes.Despite the existence of over forty thousand books dealing with the man and his era, Coming to Terms with John F. Kennedy offers something new to say about this brief but important presidency. Knott contends that Kennedy’s presidency, for better or for worse, mattered deeply and that whatever his personal flaws, Kennedy’s lofty rhetoric appealed to what is best in America without invoking the snarling nativism of his least illustrious successor, Donald Trump.

Becoming Bobby Kennedy
While the broad strokes of Robert F. Kennedy's life are well known--from presidential campaign manager to attorney general, senator, and presidential candidate--far less is understood about the deeper forces that shaped his extraordinary transformation. How did an entitled, silver-spooned prep school kid become a champion for the poor and oppressed?Although his brother's assassination in 1963 marked the turning point, it was Bobby's own encounters with suffering and injustice that truly recalibrated his moral compass. From summiting Canada's Mount Kennedy to speaking in apartheid-era South Africa, from descending into Chilean coal mines to navigating the piranha-infested waters of the Amazon, Kennedy sought to understand the lives of those the world ignored. His moral awakening continued closer to home--in the hunger-stricken shacks in the Mississippi Delta, the impoverished hills and hollers of eastern Kentucky, and the backroads of Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.Kennedy's final journey--his 1968 campaign for the presidency--cost him his life, but it also secured his legacy. Becoming Bobby Kennedy traces his remarkable evolution into a symbol of peace, justice, empathy, and moral courage, revealing a man whose vision for America remains as urgent and transformative today as it was half a century ago. In this intimate, character-driven retelling of Kennedy's last six years, B.J. Hollars focuses on the experiences that fundamentally transformed the man Kennedy became in the final chapter of his life. Rare interviews and archival research provide new dimensions to this profile.
