Sanctions Beyond Borders
Sanctions Beyond Borders tests the assumption that economic globalization and the decline of U.S. hegemony give overseas corporate behavior a free reign in defying U.S. imposed sanctions abroad. It examines the use of sanctions from the early Cold War era through the sanctions decade of the 1990s, including the Helms-Burton Law and the Iran-Libya Sanctions Act. On the one hand, the book shows that multinationals are often susceptible to U.S. influence because they fear political fallout. At the same time, the book demonstrates that even though the use of sanctions has been widely promoted by interest groups, Congress, and the general public, the effect of sanctions has fallen short on many counts. Especially when it comes to preventing economically significant transactions with proscribed nations by key multinational corporations, sanctions are shown to be weak and costly measures that damage diplomatic relations.

Arms Transfers to Israel
This book dispels two common myths about the American-Israeli patron-client relationship -- that arms transfers to Israel have been motivated by American domestic politics rather than national interests and that these arms transfers have come without any political strings attached to them. The first part of the book describes and analyses the institutionalisation of the American-Israeli arms pipeline during the Johnson administration, demonstrating conclusively in the process that arms transfers to the Jewish state were based primarily on American national interests. The second part of the book consists of four case studies that clearly reveal that American arms transfers to Israel, whether in wartime or in peacetime, have always come with a diplomatic price tag attached to them. The book is based largely on American government documents from the Foreign Relations of the United States (FRUS) series, from the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library, and from the United States National Archives.

Tuning in
Music has always been at the heart of American television. Amongst the many roles it plays in broadcasting, music entertains viewers with live and videotaped performances, evokes moods and identifies characters and settings, and sells products through commercial jingles. Most importantly, television music steers viewers through the continuous stream of daily programming. Tuning In looks at and listens to the first fifty years of American narrative television music as a unique art form. Drawing on music in a wide variety of television genres - from westerns to science-fiction thrillers to police dramas to sitcoms and commercials - author Ronald Rodman develops a new theory of television music to explain how it conveys meaning to American viewing audiences. Music in television, Rodman argues, finds its origins both in radio and in cinema, and is thus a unique multimedia form that demands its own methods of analysis. From The Dick van Dyke Show and I Love Lucy to Twin Peaks and The X-Files, Rodman's arguments are grounded in a fascinatingly historically wide-ranging and diverse selection of shows. The book also crosses media genres, looking at how the Broadway stage and the Hollywood film musical have influenced television variety shows and situation comedies. Drawing on music analysis and narrative and semiotic theories, this stimulating book illustrates how music forms part of the code that makes television broadcasts culturally meaningful.

Rodman Paradox
Greatness can impress; irreplaceability wins. Former NBA player Dennis Rodman wasn’t a star like Michael Jordan, but wherever he went, his defense and rebound skills led his teams to victory. Author Jack McCullough calls this The Rodman Paradox, a counterintuitive phenomenon in which a team’s most valuable member isn’t necessarily its biggest star, but one whose specialized skills are the most difficult to replace.Rodmans are in every type of organization. They are the engineer with a unique understanding of the company’s product architecture, the financial analyst whose data analysis improves strategic decision-making, or the special needs teacher who is the only one who can connect with her students. These Rodmans are irreplaceable and integral to success. But how do you know who your Rodmans are before it’s too late? Before they are gone and you are left picking up the pieces? The Rodman Paradox will teach you how to:• identify Rodmans in your organization,• reward, protect, and empower these Rodmans, and• make Rodmans central, not peripheral, to your long-term talent strategy. The Rodman Paradox isn’t just a theory, it’s a leadership framework necessary for lasting success. The Rodmans of our teams are crucial, and undervaluing them could be a critical mistake. After all, stars sell tickets, Stars and specialists win championships.
