Bridging Ability, Disability, and Cognitive Growth
Teachers are rarely given what they truly need: a comprehensive framework for understanding how young learners think, process, and develop—and how to support those who struggle. Bridging Ability, Disability, and Cognitive Growth addresses this need by placing cognitive development directly in educators' hands through the Unified Development Continuum (UDC). Dr. Myung-Sook Koh presents child development as an interconnected hierarchy of cognitive systems rather than a collection of symptom-based profiles. Moving from foundational processes—sensory integration, attention, and perception—through advanced competencies such as abstract reasoning and executive function, and into integrated domains including social-emotional cognition, language, and literacy, the UDC demonstrates how cognitive systems build upon one another to form functional intelligence. Each continuum is paired with sequenced, classroom-ready diagnostic instruction, enabling educators to identify cognitive barriers early and respond with targeted, developmentally aligned strategies. Essential for early childhood and special education professionals, this book equips pre-service and in-service teachers, learning coaches, and caregivers to shift from static testing toward responsive diagnostic teaching that supports diverse learners.

Diverse Early Childhood Education Policies and Practices
Diverse Early Childhood Education Policies and Practices explores issues in early childhood education and teacher preparation in five Asian countries: India, Singapore, China, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives. Some observed classrooms in these countries reflect influences that are simultaneously indigenous and colonial, local and global. By highlighting the diverse and often hybrid classroom pedagogies at work in these 21st century Asian classrooms, the discussions in this book take into consideration the influence of globalization on local policies and practices, and the challenge educators face when they are expected to reconcile different and sometimes conflicting cultural and pedagogical world views. Through a research-driven analysis of key issues such as recent revisions to national early childhood education policies, perceptions on "play-based and child-centered" pedagogy, curriculum and learning materials, and an emphasis on the teaching of values, this book illuminates the diversity of the observed classrooms as well as current trends in early childhood education in parts of Asia. The cross-national perspective serves to expand and diversify the global discourse of early childhood education and teacher education.

International Perspectives on Modern Developments in Early Childhood Education
Through different approaches like toys and play, children explore and know the rules and symbols of their communities and recreate roles and situations that reflect their sociocultural and 21st century plurilingual world. As a result, they learn how to subordinate desires to social rules, cooperate with others willingly, and engage in socially appropriate behavior. When they are evaluated together psychologically, there is a current need for action to increase the amount and quality of play provided to children. Since discrepancies are observed between urban and rural areas, as well as among different cultures, there is also a need for a research initiative where cultures can learn and take advantage of the experiences of each other.International Perspectives on Modern Developments in Early Childhood Education is an essential scholarly publication that identifies ways of intertwining key areas of early childhood education, including international approaches, intercultural education, bilingual/plurilingual education, and the role of play and toys as means for meaningful intercultural and multilingual learning. By incorporating a view of different cultures, societies, languages, and educational experiences in early childhood education, this volume provides data for international and intercultural exchange for the benefit of children. Highlighting a range of topics such as educational systems, play therapy, and games, this book is ideal for early childhood teachers, educators, academicians, researchers, professionals, psychologists, sociologists, and students.

Early Childhood Development and Later Outcome
Theories of infant cognition have transformed radically over the span of less than a century. Once considered unintelligent, infants are now described as partners in their own development. Modern research analyzes the ways in which cognitive and social skills developed early in life help shape intelligence, personality and achievement over time. In Early Childhood Development and Later Outcome, Sabina Pauen has compiled essays by international experts reflecting the state of infant cognition studies and developmental psychology. These essays present cutting-edge research on a broad range of topics of relevance to scientists, teachers and policy makers alike. The volume addresses current research on skill formation as well as longitudinal studies tracing achievement beyond childhood. Collectively, this work points the way toward approaches that will deepen our understanding of infant cognition and the profound consequences of early childhood development for future achievement.

Nature of Intelligence and Its Development in Childhood
In this Element, I first introduce intelligence in terms of historical definitions. I show that intelligence, as conceived even by the originators of the first intelligence tests, Alfred Binet and David Wechsler, is a much broader construct than just scores on narrow tests of intelligence and their proxies. I then review the major approaches to understanding intelligence and its development: the psychometric (test-based), cognitive and neurocognitive (intelligence as a set of brain-based cognitive representations and processes), systems, cultural, and developmental. These approaches, taken together, present a much more complex portrait of intelligence and its development than the one that would be ascertained just from scores on intelligence tests. Finally, I draw some take-away conclusions.

Early Childhood and the Asian American Experience
This essential and urgent book presents research-based understandings about Asian American early childhood, bringing to light the battle Asian Americans face against American nativism from their early years’ experiences. The first of its kind in academic literature, the book addresses the well-known issue of underrepresentation of Asian Americans in early childhood education research and practice, and in American society in general. Using the intersectionality and multiple identities perspectives, the authors explore a myriad of inaccurate cultural perceptions and misrepresentations, centering within-group differences among Asian American children and giving particular attention to disempowered groups among them. Issues related to socioeconomic status, gender, dis/abilities, linguistic backgrounds, and minority groups among Asian American populations are addressed, with implications for researchers and educators as well as context for examining the policies that cause inequities among Asian American children. This book is key reading for early childhood education researchers, professors, and graduate students to become more productively engaged in discussions and practices toward racial justice.

Early Childhood Education and Development in Poor Villages of Indonesia
Indonesia has begun to emerge into middle-income status, yet persistent poverty and stark inequalities continue to affect young children's development. This book tells the story of Indonesia's efforts to change the trajectory of development for poor children. Many countries have similar aims, but several aspects of what is reported here are especially valuable and perhaps unique: The study offers data on all aspects of health and development in a sample of rural young children, collected with internationally-validated measures, as well as household information, information about parenting practices including feeding patterns, parent questionnaires, and data on the prevalence and distribution of ECED services. The data reported in this book is based on a sample of more than 6,000 Indonesian children living in 310 poor villages, including two age cohorts (aged 1 and 4 years old when data were first collected on their development in 2009). From the start, the project aimed not only to support service provision but also to support the development of national standards, build national and district capacity, and encourage the establishment of a system of ECED quality assurance, efforts that are still in process. Few such analyses have been done with such a large sample and with multiple measures. These design features allow a high level of confidence in the results that are reported. The lessons from this book will help to inform not only this project's further implementation but ECED initiatives in Indonesia and around the world. Thus, the results presented in this book are of significance for researchers, policy-makers, and practitioners within and beyond Indonesia. The experiences and research results discussed here are especially relevant for:Researchers in early childhood development and programme evaluation;Policymakers within and beyond Indonesia; Providers of early childhood services; Professional development providers; Advocates for quality early childhood services.

Cognitive Styles in Infancy and Early Childhood (Psychology Revivals)
Originally published in 1976, here is a comprehensive account of the role of cognitive styles in early childhood. The author considers the possible precursors of these styles in infancy, and offers a new classification scheme that helps to clarify the relation of cognitive styles to ability and intelligence. In separate chapters, field independence–dependence, reflection–impulsivity, breadth of categorization, and styles of conceptualization are examined, along with a chapter on the interrelationships between these styles. The final chapter integrates and critically summarizes the significance of cognitive styles during the early years of life. Throughout the volume the author attempts to link cognitive styles with other theoretical constructs (for example, unilinear versus multilinear models of development, Inhelder and Piaget’s studies of classification stages), and finally, the author advances a set of seven conclusions to reflect the contemporary state of knowledge in regard to the character and function of cognitive styles during the early years of life. This volume provides information about the beginnings of cognitive styles in infancy and the course of their development in preschool years. Research is examined both from the viewpoint of developmental change and individual differences among children. The role of sex differences in cognitive styles is thoroughly examined, and, contrary to earlier claims of ‘no difference’, the author convincingly demonstrates that females manifest clear-cut superiority across a wide band of cognitive functions during the pre-school years.

Dynamics of Korean Economic Development
One of Korea's most distinguished economists and teachers offers a new and critical appraisal of his country's postwar development. Dr. Cho argues that Korea's development strategy since 1960 achieved extraordinary growth rates, but it also contributed to structural imbalances that will impede Korea's entry into the ranks of the advanced industrial countries unless they are corrected. These structural problems include concentration of economic and political power in large industrial conglomerates, retarded development of small and medium-sized enterprises essential for entrepreneurship and technological innovation, an inadequate private financial services sector, and costly labor strife. Dr. Cho concludes that Korea must undertake a "great transition" in order to sustain growth and democratization. He recommends policies to reduce industrial concentration, establish a competitive pricing system (particularly in the financial sector), promote small and medium-sized enterprises, improve labor-management relations, and encourage investment in human capital.

Promoting Positive Development in Early Childhood
This new volume in the Search Institute Series on Developmentally Attentive Community and Society represents a milestone in Search Institute’s signature work on the Developmental Assets that children and adolescents need in their lives to succeed. Through the research behind this book, Karen VanderVen links this strength-based, community-based approach to human development to early childhood development and practice. In doing so, she advances a lo- term vision of understanding child and adolescent development not merely as a series of discrete stages, but as a trajectory of development in which experiences in each phase of development link to, reinforce, or redirect experiences in other aspects of life. To be sure, VanderVen explores with both breadth and depth a parti- larly critical time in child development: the early childhood years, ages 3–5. The latest research in numerous ?elds has only increased our understanding of how important it is for communities to attend to children’s developmental expe- ences in these crucial years. Positive development in early childhood leads young people on a path to a healthy adulthood; and a lack of positive dev- opment in early childhood has a blunting effect that extends into elementary and secondary schooling years.
