Along Came Neil (Wings from Ashes: 3)
There's a new boy in town, and Ashley wants him badly. Will Karla steal her man too? Karla Centon no longer is the newest student at Brantwood High. Since moving to Brantwood six months ago, her life had been going nowhere in the right direction until she meets Neil Allard, a handsome cheerful boy who wrestles his way into her heart. Karla takes an instant disliking to Neil because she thinks he's not her type. However, what is her type? Is it tall skinny guys who wear baseball hats backwards and who happen to be bad boys or warm loveable funny guys who are more than just nice occasionally, like Neil? Ashley likes Neil too, and her friend Maggie tries her best to keep Karla away from him. However, when Ashley starts making a big deal out of his wandering eyes, Neil doesn't like it. Feisty Romance or a Tangled Trio, what will it be?

Forgotten Children
'The history of childhood is an area so full of errors, distortion and misinterpretation that I thought it vital, if progress were to be made, to supply a clear review of the information on childhood contained in such sources as diaries and autobiographies.' Dr Pollock's statement in her Preface will startle readers who have not questioned the validity of recent theories on the evolution of childhood and the treatment of children, theories which see a movement from a situation where the concept of childhood was almost absent, and children were cruelly treated, to our present western recognition that children are different and should be treated with love and affection. Linda examines this thesis particularly through the close and careful analysis of some hundreds of English and American primary sources. Through these sources, she has been able to reconstruct, probably for the first time, a genuine picture of childhood in the past, and it is a much more humane and optimistic picture than the current stereotype. Her book contains a mass of novel and original material on child-rearing practices and the relations of parents and children, and sets this in the wider framework of developmental psychology, socio-biology and social anthropology. Forgotten Children admirably fulfils the aim of its author. In the face of this scholarly and elegant account of the continuity of parental care, few will now be able to argue for dramatic transformations in the twentieth century.

«Unravelling»

Chasing Dillinger
Indiana Captain Matt Leach was at the helm of the violent years between 1933 and 1935 that came to be known in the Midwest as the era of the Public Enemy. Matt Leach elevated outlaw John Dillinger to unprecedented celebrity with press coverage aimed at smoking out the fugitive. In return, Dillinger vowed to kill him—a threat which never came to fruition. Leach’s use of publicity backfired, making him a pariah among his fellow policemen, many of whom voiced suspicion of his tell-all approach to crime fighting. Leach rose to captain of the 1933 Indiana State Police from humble origins as the son of immigrant parents. By 1937, the FBI ordered him fired for challenging their authority. After returning to private life and later enlisting in World War II, Leach planned a book to challenge the FBI’s version of the Dillinger’s final months. His tragic death in a car accident—prophetically occurring right after a meeting with publishers over his planned book about the outlaw—consigned him to his rightful place in the morbid, 1930s war on crime.

Ms. Prime Minister
Ms. Prime Minister offers both solace and words of caution for women politicians. After closely analyzing the media coverage of former Canadian Prime Minister Kim Campbell; two former Prime Ministers of New Zealand, Jenny Shipley and Helen Clark; and Australia’s 27th Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, Linda Trimble concludes that reporting both reinforces and contests unfair gender norms. News about female leaders gives undue attention to their gender identities, bodies and family lives. Yet equivalent men are also treated to evaluations of their gendered personas. And, as Trimble finds, some media accounts expose sexism and authenticate women's performances of leadership.Ms. Prime Minister provides important insight into the news frameworks that work to deny or confer political legitimacy. It concludes with advice designed to inform the gender strategies of women who aspire to political leadership roles and the reporting techniques of the journalists who cover them.

Populist Nationalism
An examination of the skillful political maneuvering of William Borah and Hiram Johnson, two of the post-war leaders of Republican progressivism, this study analyzes efforts to prevent U.S. entry into the League of Nations despite overwhelming support for the organization among both Democrats and Republicans. Following the debacle of the 1912 election, the leadership of the Republican Party embarked on a strategy of reconciliation designed to end the acrimony between progressive and conservative factions so that it could unite against the Democratic Party. A small group of progressive Republicans quickly realized that they could threaten to resume infighting and could, thus, influence policy making on important foreign policy issues. This political environment enabled William Borah and Hiram Johnson to have an extraordinary influence over the Republican Party's position concerning the League of Nations, an organization which they regarded as an agency for the perpetuation of European empires and, therefore, a threat to American democracy. Borah and Johnson effectively intimidated their party leadership and blocked the American participation in the League. Once this pattern was established, it would continue to influence Republican Party actions, in particular the construction of the Republican Party platform in 1920, the U.S. position regarding the Washington Conference on Naval Disarmament, and the issue of U.S. membership in the World Court.

Politics of Postmodernism
"Postmodernism" has become so familiar a term that it is easy to forget how complex, challenging and politically charged postmodern theory can be. We are even sometimes told that postmodernism is over, or that it never existed. This text remains a clear and incisive introduction to the field. Perhaps more importantly, it is a discussion of why postmodernism matters. Working through the issue of representation, in art forms from fiction to photography, Linda Hutcheon sets out postmodernism's highly political challenge to the dominant ideologies of the western world. A new epilogue traces the fate of the postmodern over the last ten years and into the future, responding to claims that it has, once and for all, "failed". Along with the new epilogue, this edition contains revised notes on further reading and a fully updated bibliography.
