Lazarus Serum
"If you're reading this, I am not dead. I am so much worse than that." In the ruins of a state once called California lies the dystopian city of Amaranth, where childbirth is impossible, disease is myth, and every resident relies on the Lazarus Serum to survive. When Claire Weston narrowly escapes an encounter with a mechanical man who is trying to kill her, she must travel to the future with Darius, a hardened refugee with golden eyes, in hopes of surviving. Darius is the leader of the Octane Angels, and he believes that Claire will save Amaranth. Unlike Claire, Darius is willing to do whatever it takes to survive-even if it means killing hundreds for humanity's second chance. But despite his calloused exterior, Darius falls in love with Claire's creative ways of thinking and the hope she still holds for the future. Together Darius and Claire fight their way to Amaranth in order to save the world, battling giant glass spiders and mechanical men along the way.

Milton and Newton
John Milton, England's greatest narrative poet, and Isaac Newton, England's greatest natural philosopher, are rarely thought of together. While one is regarded as the last great figure of the English Renaissance and the other as the first great figure of the English Enlightenment, their lives overlapped for three decades, and their intellectual and social networks intersected. This book not only reveals surprising and arresting parallels between their vitalist speculations on the life of matter, their unorthodox views on the Christian godhead, and their self-understanding as prophets, but also demonstrates that their natural philosophical views are connected to their unusual and, from orthodox perspectives, heretical antitrinitarian Christian views. While Milton's and Newton's systems of thought parallel each other in sometimes uncanny ways, those systems diverge in ways dictated by their deepest commitments, Milton's to freedom of the will and Newton's to divine omnipotence. In a revision of Stephen M. Fallon's argument in Milton among the Philosophers that Milton's animist materialism was idiosyncratic, Milton emerges in this book as both a participant in a vigorous vitalist movement in experimental natural philosophy and an early adopter of key ideas that would characterize the Newton circle in the decades after the poet's death. This study casts light on the significance of Milton's thought and on his place in intellectual history, while at the same time situating less familiar aspects of Newton's work in that history. Readers will find that apparently fanciful elements of Milton's epic stage have solid contemporary natural philosophical foundations.

Divided Empire
In Divided Empire, Robert T. Fallon examines the influence of John Milton's political experience on his great poems: Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, and Samson Agonistes. This study is a natural sequel to Fallon's previous book, Milton in Government, which examined Milton's decade of service as Secretary for Foreign Languages to the English Republic.Milton's works are crowded with political figures—kings, counselors, senators, soldiers, and envoys—all engaged in a comparable variety of public acts—debate, decree, diplomacy, and warfare—in a manner similar to those who exercised power on the world stage during his time in public office. Traditionally, scholars have cited this imagery for two purposes: first, to support studies of the poet's political allegiances as reflected in his prose and his life; and, second, to demonstrate that his works are sympathetic to certain ideological positions popular in present times.Fallon argues that Paradise Lost is not a political testament, however, and to read its lines as a critique of allegiances and ideologies outside the work is limit the range and scope of critical inquiry and to miss the larger purpose of the political imagery within the poem. That imagery, the author proposes, like that of all Milton's later works, serves to illuminate the spiritual message, a vision of the human soul caught up in the struggle between vast metaphysical forces of good and evil. Fallon seeks to enlarge the range of critical inquiry by assessing the influence of personal and historical events upon art, asking, as he puts it, "not what the poetry says about the events, but what the events say about the poetry." Divided Empire probes, not Milton's judgment on his sources, but the use he made of them.

Milton's Peculiar Grace
Despite writing about himself extensively and repeatedly, John Milton, the archetypal Puritan author, resolutely avoids the obligatory Augustinian narrative of sinfulness, conviction of sin, reception of the Word, regeneration of the spirit, and sanctification. The doctrine of fall, grace, and regeneration, so well illustrated in Paradise Lost, has no discernible effect on Milton's overt self-representations. Exploring this anomaly in his new book, Stephen M. Fallon contends that Milton, despite his deep engagement with theology, is not a religious writer. Why, Fallon asks, does Milton write about himself so compulsively? Why does he substitute, for the otherwise universal theological script, a story of precocious and continued virtue, even, it seems, a narrative of sinlessness? What pressures does this decision to reject the standard narrative exert on his work? In Milton's Peculiar Grace, Fallon argues that Milton writes about himself to gain immortality, secure authority for his arguments, and exert control over his readers' interpretations. He traces the return of the repressed narrative of fallenness in the author's unacknowledged and displaced self-representations, which in turn account for much of the power of the late poems. Fallon's book, based on close readings of Milton's "self-constructions" in prose and poetry throughout his career, provides a new view of Milton's life and his importance for contemporary literary theory-in particular for continued questions about authorial intention. Where Truth Lies
A free open access ebook is available upon publication. Learn more at www.luminosoa.org. This boldly original book traces the evolution of documentary film and photography as they migrated onto digital platforms during the first decades of the twenty-first century. Kris Fallon examines the emergence of several key media forms—social networking and crowdsourcing, video games and virtual environments, big data and data visualization—and demonstrates the formative influence of political conflict and the documentary film tradition on their evolution and cultural integration. Focusing on particular moments of political rupture, Fallon argues that the ideological rifts of the period inspired the adoption and adaptation of newly available technologies to encourage social mobilization and political action, a function performed for much of the previous century by independent documentary film. Positioning documentary film and digital media side by side in the political sphere, Fallon asserts that “truth” now lies in a new set of media forms and discursive practices that implicitly shape the documentation of everything from widespread cultural spectacles like wars and presidential elections to more invisible or isolated phenomena like the Abu Ghraib torture scandal or the “fake news” debates of 2016.

Blake, Myth, and Enlightenment
This book provides compelling new readings of William Blake’s poetry and art, including the first sustained account of his visionary paintings of Pitt and Nelson. It focuses on the recurrent motif of apotheosis, both as a figure of political authority to be demystified but also as an image of utopian possibility. It reevaluates Blake’s relationship to Enlightenment thought, myth, religion, and politics, from The French Revolution to Jerusalem and The Laocoön. The book combines careful attention to cultural and historical contexts with close readings of the texts and designs, providing an innovative account of Blake’s creative transformations of Enlightenment, classical, and Christian thought.
