miRNA Regulation of the Translational Machinery
An odd and unexpected finding was reported by the laboratory of Richard Jorgensen in 1990: expression of extra copies of the gene encoding chalone synthase in petunias turned off the endogenous chalone synthase gene. An observation that appeared totally unrelated was made by the laboratory of Victor Ambrose in 1993: a gene in Caenorhabditis elegans, lin-4, controlled the timing of larval development but did not encode a protein. Rather, it expressed two small RNAs that were complementary to the 3'-untranslated region of the lin-14 gene in a region that had previously been shown to repress expression of the LIN-14 protein. From another quarter, David Baulcombe's laboratory showed in 1997 that plant viruses could induce sequen- specific gene silencing. Then in a landmark paper, Andrew Fire and Craig Mello showed in 1998 that double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) triggers a gene-silencing mechanism that they dubbed RNA interference (RNAi), for which discovery they were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2006. These diverse findings have triggered an explosion of research around the world in both plants and animals to discover the mechanisms and broader ramifications of RNAi.We now know that there are both exogenous pathways involving formation of siRNA when dsRNA is introduced and endogenous pathways involving miRNA, piwiRNA, and rasiRNAs. All pathways culminate in formation of an RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) containing a member of the Argonaute protein family bound to a 22-nt RNA strand that interacts with a target mRNA or gene through Watson-Crick base pairing.

miRNA Biogenesis
This detailed volume collects chapters that seek to expand our knowledge of molecular events and extended molecular networks in gene regulation. The contents explore numerous aspects of miRNA biogenesis, a sophisticated series of events that assure a finely tuned regulation of miRNA expression and activity. Written for the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls.Authoritative and practical, miRNA Biogenesis: Methods and Protocols aims to contribute to the further development of knowledge and application of miRNA biogenesis, both in the basic research lab and in the clinic.

Fast Track to Forcing
This quick yet detailed introduction to set theory and forcing builds the reader's intuition about it as much as the mathematical detail. Intuition, rather absent from the existing literature on the subject, here plays a large role. The reader will not only learn the facts, but will understand why they are true and will be brought to ask: what else could be true? Having presented forcing in Part I, the second part of the book discusses contemporary issues in the theory of forcing. It includes known and some previously unpublished results as well as many open questions. This is ideal for those who want to start a research career in forcing but do not have a personal interlocutor. Obviously, not everything about forcing is in this book. Many references are included to help the reader further explore the vast amount of research literature available on the subject.

Portrayals of Jews in Contemporary Argentine Cinema
An in-depth study of the presence and representation of Jews in contemporary Argentine film, focusing on films shot since the year 2000.Runner-up for the AHGBI-Spanish Embassy Doctoral Publication Prize for 2017 Notwithstanding the current visual prominence of Jewish life and Jewish culture on the Argentine big screen, surprisingly little has been written about Jewish film characterization in academic scholarship. In order to fill this lacuna, Portrayals of Jews in Contemporary Argentine Cinemaexplores the depiction of the Jews of Argentina in modern Argentine cinema with particular attention to the ways in which Jews and Jewishness interact with issues of national identity. The central aim of the book is to investigate how Argentine cinema negotiates the argentinidad of Jewish Argentines, thereby adding to the mosaic that is the imagined community of Argentina. To this end, key films by both Jewish and non-Jewish directors are scrutinized, shedding light on three main areas: the masculinity of the Jewish gaucho, the effects of the 1994 AMIA bombing and family relations, including fatherhood and the intermarriage between Jews and Gentiles. Organized around these topics, the book comprises four chapters and with the exception of the first, which is a historical exposition of Jewish presence in Argentina and Argentine film, all subsequent ones take a theme-centered approach. Mirna Vohnsen is a faculty member in Spanish and Latin American Studies at Maynooth University.

Children of the Mirna Valley
In the quiet farmland of southeastern Slovenia the people of the Mirna Valley endured rule by feudal lords and the Habsburg Empire for over a thousand years. In the early 1600's, the Bevc Family worked the land in the small village of Sentrupert. Three generations and over a hundred years later, their descendants moved to the Debenec hills overlooking the Mirna Valley. The family acquired more land and spread to the nearby towns of Mokronog and Mirna. Economic conditions prompted immigration by almost one-third of the Slovenian people. One Bevc generation, a family of eleven children, found different futures in America or Slovenia. Most traded the green hills and hard work of farming for the harsh life of mining coal in a smoky, industrial town. Each withstood hardships so that their children would have a better life. Many of those children fought in World War II. In Slovenia that meant occupation and Partisan resistance; in America, sons went off to war in Europe and the Pacific.

Perinatal Neuropathology
There is an increasing demand for high-standard fetal and infant neuropathology examinations. Novel imaging techniques, development of new diagnostic methods and advances in genetics have stimulated the interest in gaining additional knowledge on developmental, perinatal and neonatal neuropathology. Approaching the subject from a practical standpoint, diagnostic templates for reports are provided in this essential guide to aid clinicians with different areas of expertise. Each chapter will includes numerous high-quality images, accompanied by explanatory legends from the authors' own experiences. Covering autopsy and tissue processing techniques, the authors discuss a range of disorders such as neural tube defects, brain tumours, storage disorders and many others. This book provides access to an online version on Cambridge Core, which can be accessed via the code printed on the inside of the cover. Compiling the latest advances in fetal and infant diagnostics and care, this book is a highly valuable educational resource.

Contemporary Argentine Women Filmmakers
This edited volume offers a wide-ranging picture of Argentine women filmmakers’ contribution to the film industry from the 1980s to the present by bringing together the work of highly acclaimed and emerging directors. Through thirteen critical essays by leading scholars in the field of Argentine cinema, the book acknowledges that contemporary women filmmakers have transformed the cinema of Argentina by questioning, challenging and debunking hegemonic patriarchal systems of representation. With a focus on women’s voices and experiences, the contributions redress both the under-representation of women and girls onscreen and the perpetuation of stereotypes, while exploring the innovative aesthetics used by these filmmakers.
