Book of Mychal
His death certificate bears the number one. On September 11, 2001, Father Mychal Judge rushed to the fires as quickly as those who fought them, losing his own life while tirelessly ministering to New York's bravest. "The Book of Mychal" recounts the colorful, astonishing and, at times, troubled life of the beloved Franciscan priest, including his struggles with alcoholism, the Catholic Church hierarchy, and his own sexuality. Daly retracts the footsteps of 'Father Mike' inside the fire house as FDNY Chaplain, inside his friary, and inside the chaos that often befalls New York...Culminating tragically on that fateful day at the Emergency Services Command Post of the North Tower.

Michell Structures
The book covers the theory of Michell structures being the lightest and fully stressed systems of bars, designed within a given domain, possibly within the whole space, transmitting a given load towards a given support. Discovered already in 1904 by A.G.M. Michell, the structures named after him have attracted constant attention due to their peculiar feature of disclosing the optimal streams of stresses equilibrating a given load and thus determining the optimal layout of bars. The optimal layouts emerge from among all possible structural topologies, thus constituting unique designs being simultaneously light and stiff. The optimal structures turn out to be embedded in optimal vector fields covering the whole feasible domain. Key features include: a variationally consistent theory of bar systems, thin plates in bending and membrane shells; recapitulation of the theory of optimum design of trusses of minimum weight or of minimal compliance; the basis of 2D Michell theory for a single load case; kinematic and static approaches; 2D benchmark constructions including Hemp’s structures and optimal cantilevers; L-shape domain problems, three forces problem in 2D, bridge problems; revisiting the old - and delivering new - 3D benchmark solutions; extension to multiple load conditions; Prager-Rozvany grillages; the theory of funiculars and archgrids; the methods of optimum design of shape and material inspired by the theory of Michell structures, industrial applications. The book can be useful for graduate students, professional engineers and researchers specializing in the Optimum Design and in Topology Optimization in general.

C-Myc in B-Cell Neoplasia
The papers in this book were presented at the 14th Mechanisms in B-cell Neoplasia meeting that was held in Bethesda, Maryland October 21-23, 1996. In 1995 the organizers decided that the format of the meeting would be changed and that specific topics relevant to B-cell neoplasia would be discussed. This year's topic is on the c-myc oncogene in B-cell neoplasia which has been discussed in virtually every previous meeting. Some of the presentations announced for the first time dramatic advances in our understanding of c-myc and because this subject has become highly complex it was thought that devoting the whole meeting to this theme would be appropriate. The book, therefore, repre sents a review of many aspects of the myc problem but by no means is truly comprehensive. In a recent Medline search there were 8,505 references to myc, fully illustrating the magnitude of the interest and depth of this field. The organizers of the meeting have each contributed review chapters that summarize different aspects of the meeting. We thank the National Cancer Institute for sponsoring this workshop and the staff of Cygnus, Inc. , for their outstanding organizational assistance. The organizers are most grateful to Vickie Rogers for assembling the book and dealing with the edi torialization of the manuscripts. MICHAEL POlTER FRITZ MELCHERS Table of Contents M. POlTER and K. Mycenae
Heinrich Schliemann (1822–1890) published Mycenae, an account of his archaeological excavations of the ancient Greek cities of Mycenae and Tiryns, in 1878. Schliemann's astonishing finds revealed that the cities had a historical reality outside Homeric epic. His excavations uncovered many priceless treasures, most famously the 'death mask of Agamemnon' and the shaft graves, filled with pottery, carved stones, skeletons, gold, jewellery and weaponry. He also uncovered much about the layout and architecture of the two lost cities. The volume is generously illustrated with images of artefacts, maps and charts. It is introduced by W. E. Gladstone, who gave Schliemann the political assistance necessary for the excavations to take place. Schliemann's discoveries were met with wild enthusiasm, and while today his methods of excavation are deplored and many of his conclusions thought to be ill-founded, he is rightly credited with the discovery of the lost and ancient Mycenaean civilisation.

Chelsea Whistle
In this gritty, confessional memoir, Michelle Tea takes the reader back to the city of her childhood: Chelsea, Massachusetts,a place where time and hope are spent on things not getting any worse. Tea's girlhood is shaped by the rough fabric of the neighbourhood and by its characters, the soft vulnerability of her sister Madeline and her quietly brutal Polish father the doddering, sometimes violent nuns of Our Lady of Assumption Marisol Lewis from the projects by the creek and Johnna Latrotta, the tough-as-nails Italian dance-school teacher who offered a slim chance for escape to every young Chelsea girl in tulle and tap shoes. Told in Tea's trademark loose-tongued, lyrical style, this memoir both celebrates and annihilates one girl's tightrope walk out of a working-class slum and the lessons she carries with her. With wry humour and a hard-fought wisdom, Tea limns the extravagant peril of a dramatic adolescence with the private, catastrophic secret harbored within the walls of her family's home,a secret that threatens to destroy her family forever.

My Voice: Rachel Levy
Rachel Levy spent her early childhood in the Carpathian region of Czechoslovakia, where Jewish communities lived in close-knit towns disrupted by political upheaval and the rise of antisemitic rule. When Nazi power extended into the region, Rachel and her family faced forced labour, confiscation of property and escalating violence. Eventually captured and deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau, she endured the devastation of family separation, starvation and the relentless pressure to survive. Later transferred through other labour sites and forced on a winter death march, Rachel reached the war’s end deeply traumatised and largely alone. After liberation, Rachel was brought to Britain as a child refugee, where she confronted language barriers, cultural dislocation and the challenge of carrying unspoken memories. Over time, she built a family and a life rooted in both loss and endurance, retaining Yiddish as a link to the world she left behind.Rachel’s book is part of the My Voice book collection, a stand-alone project of The Fed, the leading Jewish social care charity in Manchester, dedicated to preserving the life stories of Holocaust survivors and refugees from Nazi persecution who settled in the UK. The oral history, which is recorded and transcribed, captures their entire lives from before, during and after the war years. The books are written in the words of the survivor so that future generations can always hear their voice. The My Voice book collection is a valuable resource for Holocaust awareness and education.

Mychael Danna's The Ice Storm
Ang Lee's The Ice Storm is a film of striking significance, which achieved widespread critical acclaim for its well crafted and superbly acted study of suburban morality in 1970s America. For the film, composer Mychael Danna created one of the most distinctive scores of the 1990s, one that constantly challenges perceptions of the form and function of film music. In Mychael Danna's The Ice Storm: A Film Score Guide, Miguel Mera explores the music and sound Danna uses in his score, investigating the narrative, structural, and aesthetic themes of the film and illustrating the techniques and stylistic features central to Danna's music. Mera carefully examines the collaborative processes that influenced the score's development, describing the significance of the composer's relationships with the director, producer, editor, orchestrator, and sound designers to the evolution of the score and demonstrating how the politics of filmmaking interact with creativity. This seventh volume in Scarecrow's Film Score Guide series also includes a biography of Danna and a complete analysis of the full soundtrack considering the sound design, pre-existent pop songs, and the specifically arranged song by David Bowie in conjunction with Danna's fascinating score, making this essential reading for film music scholars and students.

Middle Helladic and Early Mycenaean Mortuary Practices in the Southern and Western Peloponnese
This book sets out the evidence for burial practices in the southern and western Peloponnese of Greece during the middle Helladic and early Mycenaean periods (c. 2000-1400 BC), and to interpret the evidence in terms of human action. In the first section, the book details the scope of the research, whereas the remaining chapters present an analysis of the evidence to answer a range of generic questions on mortuary practices. The conclusions are interpreted in terms of the use of burial practices in the study of 'Mycenaean civilisation', confirming that variations in time and space suggest that a closer study of local and regional archaeologies should be a priority in future research aims. The Appendices contain detailed information on the sites that form the basis of the study. (This book will also appeal to those non-specialists with a serious interest in the region as a fascinating, archaeological reference work or 'guide'.)
