Jesuit on the Roof of the World
Jesuit priests often served as the avant-garde as European powers expanded in the early modern era. Jesuit on the Roof of the World is the first full-length study of Ippolito Desideri, a Jesuit explorer and missionary who traveled in Tibet from 1715 to 1721. Based on close readings of a wide range of primary sources in Tibetan, Italian, and Latin, Trent Pomplun's work follows the Jesuit's journey across Tibet's western deserts, his entry into thecourt of the Mongol chieftain Lhazang Khan, and his flight during the war that shook the Himalayan kingdom during his stay. Desideri's letters and later account of his travels relate the encounter between his Thomist philosophy and the scholasticism of Geluk monks; the personal conflict between his Roman Catholicbeliefs and his appreciation of Tibetan religion and culture; and the political intrigues that led to the establishment of the Chinese protectorate in 1720. Desideri's writings also offer a unique glimpse of Europe's fascination with the land of snows.

Developing and Applying Biologically-Inspired Vision Systems
When comparing machine vision systems to the visual systems of humans and animals, there is much to be learned in terms of object segmentation, lighting invariance, and recognition of object categories. Studying the biological systems and applying the findings to the structure of computational vision models and artificial vision systems aims to be an essential approach of advancing the field of machine vision. Developing and Applying Biologically-Inspired Vision Systems: Interdisciplinary Concepts provides interdisciplinary research which evaluates the performance of machine visual models and systems in comparison to biological systems. Blending the ideas of current scientific knowledge and biological vision, this collection of new ideas intends to inspire approaches and cross-disciplinary research to applications in machine vision.

Pompeiana
Sir William Gell (1777–1836) was a British archaeologist well known for his drawings of sites and objects of classical interest. Gell published this new, two-volume edition of his Pompeiana in 1832, in an effort to describe the latest archaeological discoveries in the Roman city destroyed by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE. Concerned 'that time will incalculably diminish the freshness of those objects … stripped of their external coats by the rains of winter or the burning suns of summer', he made it his task to describe what he had seen both through description and through his own numerous illustrations. In this first volume, Gell focuses on sites including the forum, baths, and the temple of Fortune. Pompeiana reveals both the history of the excavations, the individual finds, and the processes of field archaeology itself during a more romantic age.

Pompey the Great
Pompey’s career in command began at a young age, taking control of his deceased father’s legions in support of Sulla during the civil war with Marius. A precocious and ambitious talent, he held repeated commands before he was the legal age. Sulla called him ‘the teenage butcher’. He served in the Sertorian War in Spain (recovering from an early defeat), helped crush Spartacus’ revolt then freed the Eastern Mediterranean from the depradations of Cilician pirates in a matter of weeks. He brought a victorious end to the long-running Third Mithridatic War and brought the whole of Asia Minor, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Judea under Roman influence by a mix of force and diplomacy. For good reason he was hailed even in his own lifetime as the ‘Roman Alexander’ and Lee Fratantuono gives these events the detailed coverage they deserve. All this came before the events for which he is usually remembered: his great civil war against Julius Caesar. There is detailed analysis of the opening moves in Italy, Pompey’s victory over Caesar at Dyrrhachium and the climactic battle at Pharsalus in September 48 BC. Pompey was defeated, fled ignominiously and was assassinated, leaving his two sons to carry on the war.

Georges Pompidou Et Les aEtats-Unis

Pompeiana
Sir William Gell (1777–1836) was a British archaeologist known for his drawings of sites and objects of classical interest. Noting that from the beginning of the excavations at Pompeii in 1748 'to the present day, no [substantial] work has appeared in the English language upon the subject of its domestic antiquities', together with architect and fellow countryman John P. Gandy he first published Pompeiana to help detail important findings that had been made by the excavators in the first two decades of the nineteenth century. To this end they provide historical discussion, analysis, and over 75 plates illustrating various points of archaeological interest including, as their subtitle notes, 'the topography, edifices, and ornaments of Pompeii'. Pompeiana is an important work that helped open the excavations to English readers and created further awareness of the treasures of the doomed city, destroyed by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE.

Sons of Pompey the Great
While the military exploits of Pompey the Great are well known to students of Roman history, the impressive deeds of his sons Sextus and Gnaeus are less well known. After the defeat and death of their father in 48 BC, the sons of Pompey carried on the struggle against Julius Caesar in Spain, Africa, and Sicily. In 45 BC the brothers were defeated at the epic battle of Munda, which Caesar rated the hardest-won victory of his career, and Gnaeus was killed. Sextus Pompey, however, escaped and went to Sicily, from where he continued the war against the Caesarian faction for a further ten years. He developed the island as his own private de facto kingdom, a secure naval base that supported his powerful fleet in far-flung operations. Allying himself with Caesar’s assassins, he fought the forces of the Second Triumvirate, not least Caesar’s adoptive son Octavian (the future Emperor Augustus) and his master admiral Agrippa, until finally caught and executed in 35 BC. Lee Fratantuono skilfully narrates the role of the sons of Pompey in these dramatic events: politics, diplomacy and epic battles by land and sea.

Georges Pompidou Et La Culture
