Arthur Spiethoff and the German Historical School of Economics
Arthur Spiethoff (1873–1957), an economist of the German Historical School of Economics, is best known for his theory of the business cycle. Despite Spiethoff calling for a unified reading of his work, his epistemological thinking has received less attention. This book addresses that gap by analysing Spiethoff’s theory of the business cycle in the light of his epistemological views. Putting Spiethoff’s work in context, the book also investigates the most significant features of the evolution of the “research programme” of the German Historical School of Economics, with particular reference to the relationships between Schmoller, Sombart, Weber and Spiethoff. In addition, Spiethoff’s work is compared with some of the scientific orientations of the current debates: on the epistemological side, the book examines the relationship between Spiethoff’s views and some contemporary thinking on scientific realism, as well as methodological pluralism in social sciences. And, more broadly, it emphasises the analytical relevance of the historical approach in explaining the economic imbalances of contemporary capitalism, questioning the idea, widespread in the neoclassical approach, that taking historical specificities into account makes it hard to achieve a theoretically effective attitude. Many areas of applied mathematics call for an efficient calculus in infinite dimensions. This is most apparent in quantum physics and in all disciplines of science which describe natural phenomena by equations involving stochasticity. With this monograph we intend to provide a framework for analysis in infinite dimensions which is flexible enough to be applicable in many areas, and which on the other hand is intuitive and efficient. Whether or not we achieved our aim must be left to the judgment of the reader. This book treats the theory and applications of analysis and functional analysis in infinite dimensions based on white noise. By white noise we mean the generalized Gaussian process which is (informally) given by the time derivative of the Wiener process, i.e., by the velocity of Brownian mdtion. Therefore, in essence we present analysis on a Gaussian space, and applications to various areas of sClence. Calculus, analysis, and functional analysis in infinite dimensions (or dimension-free formulations of these parts of classical mathematics) have a long history. Early examples can be found in the works of Dirichlet, Euler, Hamilton, Lagrange, and Riemann on variational problems. At the beginning of this century, Frechet, Gateaux and Volterra made essential contributions to the calculus of functions over infinite dimensional spaces. The important and inspiring work of Wiener and Levy followed during the first half of this century. Moreover, the articles and books of Wiener and Levy had a view towards probability theory.

Die Korrelationsrechnung im Verkehrswesen
Im Verkehrswesen werden dauernd viele Zahlen erhoben und zusammen gestellt, aber kaum gründlich gedeutet und ausgewertet. Gute Lehrbücher und Formelsammlungen der Statistik und Korrelationsrechnung sind vor handen. Es fehlt aber eine kurze und leicht verständliche Einführung, die mit praktischen Beispielen des Verkehrswesens versehen ist. Der An fänger soll Vertrauen zur statistischen Methode fassen und sie Schritt für Schritt beherrschen lernen. Er wird dann gern zu den ausführlichen Lehr und Handbüchern greifen und seine Kenntnisse befestigen und vertiefen. Die hier gegebene Darstellung der Korrelationsrechnung ist aus Vor lesungen und Übungen entstanden, die ich im Herbstsemester 1966 gehal ten habe. In den ersten Abschnitten werden einige grundlegende Begriffe der Sta tistik behandelt, ehe die eigentliche Darlegung der Korrelation beginnt. Beabsichtigt ist nicht eine streng mathematische Darstellung, die man in den Lehrbüchern der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung und Statistik [6; 10; 31; 37J nachlesen kann, sondern ein Überblick über die Methoden und ihre Anwendungen in Beispielen des Verkehrswesens. Die Absicht des Buches ist es also, über die Anwendung der Korrelationsrechnung im Verkehrswesen zu sprechen. Auch sind einige Randgebiete aufgenommen wie die harmonische Analyse und informationstheoretische Methoden. Zu danken habe ich einer ganzen Reihe meiner Schüler, die Zahlenrech nungen vorbereitet und durchgeführt haben, und Frau Erika Müller, die die Reinschrift mit Sorgfalt hergestellt hat.
