American Pietàs
In American Pietàs, Ruby C. Tapia reveals how visual representations of racialized motherhood shape and reflect national citizenship. By means of a sustained engagement with Roland Barthes’s suturing of race, death, and the maternal in Camera Lucida, Tapia contends that the contradictory essence of the photograph is both as a signifier of death and a guarantor of resurrection.Tapia explores the implications of this argument for racialized productions of death and the maternal in the context of specific cultural moments: the commemoration of Princess Diana in U.S. magazines; the intertext of Toni Morrison’s and Hollywood’s Beloved; the social and cultural death in teen pregnancy, imaged and regulated in California’s Partnership for Responsible Parenting campaigns; and popular constructions of the “Widows of 9/11” in print and televisual journalism.Taken together, these various visual media texts function in American Pietàs as cultural artifacts and as visual nodes in a larger network of racialized productions of maternal bodies in contexts of national death and remembering. To engage this network is to ask how and toward what end the racial project of the nation imbues some maternal bodies with resurrecting power and leaves others for dead. In the spaces between these different maternities, says Tapia, U.S. citizen-subjects are born—and reborn.

Space Enterprise
In Space Enterprise - Living and Working Offworld, Dr Philip Harris provides the vision and rationale as to why humanity is leaving its cradle, Earth, to use space resources, as well as pursuing lunar industrialization and establishing offworld settlements. As a management/space psychologist, Dr. Harris presents a behavioral science perspective on space exploration and enterprise. In this his 45th book, Phil has completely revised and updated the two previous editions of this classic, placing new emphasis on the need for more synergy and participation by the private sector. He not only provides a critical review of what is happening in the global space community, but offers specific strategies for lunar economic development. The author analyzes the human factors in contemporary and future space developments, especially relative to the deployment of people aloft. This user-friendly volume offers numerous photographs, diagrams, exhibits, and case studies.

Back
Original edition reissued in 2023 with new cover. This is a print on demand title and is not held in stock. The delivery leadtimes will be longer. The Authors of this book are an Anatomist and a Sports Physiotherapist with wide experience of teaching both postgraduate and undergraduate courses related to sports injuries. Because of its critical location in the body and its many components, diagnosing, managing and rehabilitating sport-related back injury is extremely challenging and requires a detailed knowledge of the associated anatomy. This book reviews in detail the structure and functional anatomy of the back and its many components, emphasising those points which are relevant to sports injuries. The book has three special features. Firstly, it focuses on the essential components of the back which must be in mind when solving sport injury problems and disorders. Secondly, the content has been assembled and distilled from various sources over and above what can be found in conventional textbooks of anatomy, to provide a level of understanding which is both academic and necessary for diagnosing and managing sporting back disorders. Thirdly, throughout the book case studies and clinical reasoning of the associated problems are presented showing how knowledge of anatomy can be applied to solve many problems associated with sports injury. The book is fully illustrated with line drawings, photographs of actual anatomical structures, scans and x-radiographs.

Advances in Myocardiology
The Eleventh World Congress of the International Society for Heart Re search 1983 provided an opportunity to review some of the growing points in our knowledge of the structure and function of the myocardium. Those at the meeting will recall how London suddenly went tropical. Yet aseries of scintillating reviews held over six hundred scientists captive in the lecture halls of Imperial College. There were sessions on nuclear magnetic reso nance, the molecular basis of electrophysiology, calmodulin, protein syn thesis and degradation, oxygen free radicals, the structural components of the myocyte, sarcolemmal sodium exchange, and the influence of lipids on membranes. Here we have gathered together, as quickly as possible, a number of the presentations of the speakers invited to the symposia. They give, we believe, a striking picture ofthe diversity oftechnology and scientific enquiry which underlies this immensely active domain of modern cardiology. If only our clinical colleagues were more aware of it! Peter Harris Philip A.
