Stanislaw Brzozowski and the Polish Beginnings of 'Western Marxism'
This book introduces the English-speaking reader to the thought of Stanislaw Brzozowski (1878-1911), the outstanding Polish philosopher and literary critic. Although practically unknown in the West, Brzozowski is an important but neglected forerunner of the intellectual tradition of `Western Marxism', most commonly associated with Georg Lukács and Antonio Gramsci.Concentrating first on the early phase of Brzozowski's thought, Professor Walicki goes on to analyse his ideas on the working class and its relation to the intelligentsia and contemporary working-class ideologies. Finally he deals with aspects of his thought which go beyond the Marxian problematic and round off the intellectual portrait of the man.Brzozowski's anti-naturalistic approach resulted in a radical reinterpretation of Marxism which dealt with many of the problems of the revolt against positivism in European philosophy. Professor Walicki argues that the retrieval of the philosophical and humanist aspect of Marxism, and its separation from the Engels-inspired `scientific Marxism', was the achievement of Brzozowski and not, as frequently assumed, of Lukács, who came to similar conclusions only some ten years later.By placing Brzozowski within the cross-currents of the various philosophical, sociological, literary, and political streams of Western and Eastern European thought in which Marxism was situated, Professor Walicki produces a fascinating study of an early East European challenge to orthodox Marxism.

Stanisław Przybyszewski - Writer and Aesthetician
This volume brings together several studies on the writings of Stanisław Przybyszewski (1868-1927), one of the most important writers of Young Poland. The book also includes a supplement on the poetry of Zofia Wojnarowska. All the co-authors of the volume have explored Przybyszewski's work from different perspectives, placing it in many cultural contexts. Among the themes explored are the novel Children of Satan, the drama The Guests, Karol Irzykowski's statements about Przybyszewski, the opposition between bohemianism and dandyism (exemplified by Przybyszewski and Roman Jaworski), and Przybyszewski's views on Poznań culture. Przybyszewski was a writer appreciated in Germany and Scandinavia. He quickly became a leader of the Polish artistic avant-garde. In his works he dealt with the most important problems of modern culture at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The studies collected in this monograph show various aspects of his writing, which combined Polish and European perspectives.

Stanislavski and The Method for the 21st Century Actor
Written by a highly influential post-Stanislavskian practitioner, this book offers an accessible and contemporary interpretation of The Method, setting out techniques and exercises to train and develop actors today. Going back to the roots of Method Acting and the work of Lee Strasberg and Stanislavski, and using Barrouk's own unique practice as a lens through which to view it, The Method here is refreshed as something nuanced, contemporary, safe and practical that will benefit all actors - even those most skeptical of it.Through making a case for the relevance of Method Acting to our modern times and preserving its essence while updating its notions, the book covers the full range of the acting process, including character analysis questions, active analysis, actions, individual and group exploration, identifying actions, and developing/creating a scene in rehearsal. Practical exercises and activities are woven throughout the text, offering a modern framework in which to consider this practice. The benefits of looking at Stanislavski through both a contemporary and a different cultural lens is invaluable for students and actors alike, and they will appreciate the playful, lively and provocative approach in contrast to the sacred tone of other books on the same topic.

Rediscovering Stanislavsky
Konstantin Stanislavsky (1863–1938) was one of the most innovative and influential directors of modern theatre and his system and related practices continue to be studied and used by actors, directors and students. Maria Shevtsova sheds new light on the extraordinary life of Stanislavsky, uncovering and translating Russian archival sources, rehearsal transcripts, production scores and plans. This comprehensive study rediscovers little-known areas of Stanislavsky's new type of theatre and its immersion in the visual arts, dance and opera. It demonstrates the fundamental importance of his Russian Orthodoxy to the worldview that underpinned his integrated System and his goals for the six laboratory research studios that he established or mentored. Stanislavsky's massive achievements are explored in the intricate and historically intertwined political, cultural and theatre contexts of Tsarist Russia, the 1917 Revolution, the volatile 1920s, and Stalin's 1930s. Rediscovering Stanislavksy provides a completely fresh perspective on his work and legacy.
