Beginner's Guide to Sumi-e
This practical guide is perfect for those looking to try this ancient art form for the first time!In this book, Japanese master artist Shozo Koike reveals the simple secrets of Sumi-e, offering step-by-step instructions with clear photographs and online video tutorials showing you how to paint 19 traditional subjects.Sumi-e is the meditative Japanese form of ink painting taught by Zen Buddhist monks to encourage mindfulness and an awareness of our surroundings. It uses only ink, water, a brush and paper to capture natural objects and landscapes in a vivid, spontaneous fashion.Koike begins with the basics--what to buy and how to prepare the ink in a traditional inkstone. Next, he shows you how to practice the 11 basic brushstrokes used for all Sumi-e paintings. The 19 traditional subjects taught in this book include:Flowers like orchids, chrysanthemums, camellias, roses and peoniesPlants and fruits including bamboo, eggplants, grapes and chestnutsAnimal figures including small birds, butterflies, chicks, crabs and goldfishKoike also explains the philosophy of Sumi-e, which emerges from the use of negative white space to enhance the painted forms. Readers will enter into a world not just of black and white, but of infinite shades of gray which are capable of evoking all the sensations of color using these techniques.

SUMO Protocols
Post-translational protein modifications by members of the ubiquitin family are widely recognized as important regulatory control systems for a variety of biological pathways. Their influence on eukaryotic cellular metabolism is comparable to that of other modifi- tions such as phosphorylation, acetylation and methylation. The small ubiquitin-related modifier SUMO uses a conjugation and de-conjugation system closely related to that of ubiquitin itself; yet, the functions of the SUMO system are highly diverse and largely independent of the ubiquitin system. SUMO modification controls the activity of tr- scription factors and can influence protein stability, but it also contributes to nucleo-cy- plasmic transport, chromosome segregation and DNA damage repair. As a consequence, the SUMO system pervades virtually all areas of basic molecular and cell biology, and scientists from different backgrounds, including medical researchers, are likely to enco- ter SUMO in the course of their studies. This volume, SUMO Protocols, therefore aims at presenting a collection of methods relevant to SUMO research in order to make these tools available to biochemists, molecular and cell biologists as well as research-oriented clinicians not yet familiar with the system. In contrast to the ubiquitin system, which has been the subject of several reviews and methods collections, no practical compendium entirely devoted to SUMO has been p- lished.

Search for Supersymmetry in pp Collisions at √s = 8 TeV with a Photon, Lepton, and Missing Transverse Energy
This Ph.D. thesis is a search for physics beyond the standard model (SM) of particle physics, which successfully describes the interactions and properties of all known elementary particles. However, no particle exists in the SM that can account for the dark matter, which makes up about one quarter of the energy-mass content of the universe. Understanding the nature of dark matter is one goal of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The extension of the SM with supersymmetry (SUSY) is considered a promising possibilities to explain dark matter. The nominated thesis describes a search for SUSY using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. It utilizes a final state consisting of a photon, a lepton, and a large momentum imbalance probing a class of SUSY models that has not yet been studied extensively. The thesis stands out not only due to its content that is explained with clarity but also because the author performed more or less all aspects of the thesis analysis by himself, from data skimming to limit calculations, which is extremely rare, especially nowadays in the large LHC collaborations.

Documentary Cinema of Haneda Sumiko
This is the first academic book to provide a comprehensive survey of the work of Haneda Sumiko (1926-), the first woman to regularly direct documentaries in postwar Japan, by examining her major documentaries amongst the extensive filmography she developed over sixty years. Bringing together scholars from a range of disciplines—including film studies, gender studies, art history, eco-criticism, and aging studies—this volume explores Haneda’s depiction of critical issues in Japanese society, culture, history, and nature. It showcases how her cinema provides a personal and reflective view on Japan’s drastic transformations of the twentieth century, while her career also bore witness to changes taking place in the national cinema industry. It thus situates Haneda’s oeuvre within the history of Japanese non-fiction film whilst offering new perspectives on questions of authorship and representation.Collectively, the chapters in this book make a case for Haneda to be recognised as a key figure in Japan’s postwar documentary scene. Bridging gaps in research on both documentary studies and women filmmakers, this will be a valuable resource to scholars and students of film studies, Japanese studies, gender studies and art history, as well as to film curators and programmers.

Sumarah
Sumarah is a philosophy, a form of meditation, and a way of life originating from Java. It is a path of the heart, of no effort, of no form - a path of surrender. Sumarah guides the practitioner towards deep relaxation of body, feeling, and mind. This is the first step in the process of personal transformation and awakening the inner teacher. In her book, Laura Romano draws on her own extensive personal experience - nourished by the meditation practice that she was introduced to and trained in from her first years in Java - in describing her frequent meetings with the many Javanese masters then still alive. To better illustrate the principles of the Sumarah tradition, she relates stories from her own journey, vividly recreating the relaxed and warm atmosphere of meditation meetings in the homes of various meditation teachers.

Sumi-e
Learn the engaging art of Japanese sumi painting, where simple sweeps of the brush capture the essence of nature. The Japanese art tradition of Sumi-e uses brushes and ink washes to combine calligraphic lines with carefully thought out blank spaces. Traditionally focusing on flowers and plants, this mindful art form has roots in Zen Buddhism, striving to capture the essence and natural vitality of a subject, rather than creating a realistic representation. In this beautifully illustrated step-by-step guide, master calligraphic artist Akemi Lucas describes the equipment, brush positioning, ink-mixing techniques and mindset needed to excel at this delightful art form. Ideal both for beginners and accomplished Sumi-e artists, the projects start with orchid, bamboo, chrysanthemum, and plum blossom – known as ‘The Four Gentlemen’ – and increase in complexity through fruits and flowers to water, insects, and birds. Many of the later projects also include important advice on background washes and other advanced techniques that will add sophistication to your work. Prepare your ink, clear your mind, and create natural wonderlands using simple sweeps of the brush.
