Sutton Hoo
Charles Green tells here the dramatic story of the initial excavation of Sutton Hoo, one of the richest archaeological finds of all time. In the Sutton Hoo burial grounds scientists unearthed a ship containing the treasures of a king who was most likely the last of the pagan rulers of East Anglia.Green guides us through the scientific significance of the Sutton Hoo discovery: the beautiful jewelry indicates the high level of Anglo-Saxon artistic culture, the royal insignia offers clues to the organization of the East Anglican kingdom and its relations with neighboring regimes, while the burial ships themselves inspire new hypotheses regarding Anglo-Saxon immigration routes. Any reader will be irresistibly drawn to learn more of this archaeological dig which has uncovered such intriguing relics of our medieval ancestors. This edition takes into account discoveries that have been made since the publication of the original edition. Barbara Green, an archaeologist in East Anglia and Charles Green’s daughter, has revised and updated the original text of her father’s book.

Sutton Hoo Story
A definitive account of Sutton Hoo, its discovery, history and famed treasure. The Sutton Hoo ship-burial is one of the most significant finds ever made in Europe. It lies in a burial ground which contains all the elements of archaeological mystery: seventeen mounds, buried treasure, and sacrificed horses. In this very accessible book, Martin Carver explains what we know of this site, at which the leaders of the Dark Age kingdom of East Anglia signalled the pagan and maritime nature of their court. This is the story not only of this dramatic place, but also of its exploration over half a century, which amounts to a potted history of British archaeology.

Philosophy and Memory Traces
Philosophy and Memory Traces defends two theories of autobiographical memory. One is a bewildering historical view of memories as dynamic patterns in fleeting animal spirits, nervous fluids which rummaged through the pores of brain and body. The other is new connectionism, in which memories are 'stored' only superpositionally, and reconstructed rather than reproduced. Both models, argues John Sutton, depart from static archival metaphors by employing distributed representation, which brings interference and confusion between memory traces. Both raise urgent issues about control of the personal past, and about relations between self and body. Sutton demonstrates the role of bizarre body fluids in moral physiology, as philosophers from Descartes and Locke to Coleridge struggled to control their own innards and impose cognitive discipline on 'the phantasmal chaos of association'. Going on to defend connectionism against Fodor and critics of passive mental representations, he shows how problems of the self are implicated in cognitive science.

Gridlock
Cities across the world are facing unprecedented challenges in traffic management and transit congestion while coping with growing populations and mobility aspirations; existing policies that aim to tackle congestion and create more sustainable transport futures offer only weak remedies. In Gridlock: Congested Cities, Contested Policies, Unsustainable Mobility, transport consultant John C. Sutton explores how two competing discourses in transport policy and planning practice – convivial and competitive ideologies – lead to contradictory solutions and a gridlock in policy as well as on transport systems.Gridlock examines current transport and mobility in a geographical, social, political-economy and technological context. The challenges of rising congestion are highlighted through case studies from the UK, the USA, and OECD countries. Sutton offers readers a vision of a sustainable mobility future through the concept of mobility management, combining mobile communication and information technology with logistics to match travel demand to the capacity of transport systems.Essential reading for transport professionals and students of transportation planning and policy, Gridlock offers a unique manifesto for sustainable mobility settlement, addressing the pressing problems of growing populations and congestion while looking ahead to a more sustainable future.

George Miksch Sutton
The first biography of the distinguished ornithologistGeorge Miksch Sutton (1898-1982) is revered by bird lovers everywhere for his beautiful paintings. A Victorian gentleman, adventurer, and raconteur, he was trained in the sciences but felt equally at home in the arts.Jerome Jackson, a friend and colleague of Sutton, draws on extant correspondence, interviews, and personal knowledge to offer a portrait of the artist that will surprise those who knew him only in his later years. Capturing a superb ornithologist who worked under the most inhospitable conditions, from the arctic to the tropics, Jackson shows us a person who guarded his privacy and struggled with uncertainty.Jackson depicts a Renaissance man whose life was, more than a search for birds, a quest for knowledge through science and art in the service of humanity. Tracing Sutton's roots through two generations, Jackson reveals what set him apart from other ornithologists and bird artists. Focusing on Sutton's formative years - how he acquired his love of birds at an early age and how that love guided his life - Jackson then relates Sutton's adventures in the Arctic, Mexico, Oklahoma, and elsewhere.Jackson's account fills in details missing from Sutton's autobiography, Bird Student. Gracing the book are fifty reproductions of Sutton's art - twenty-eight in full color - including early, unpublished, or obscure works along with non-avian subjects.
