Shadows Over Iran: A Personal Account 1976-83
This true account started as a love story with many obstacles in its way such as nationality, religion and differing cultures and developed into becoming a witness to major historical events. Starting in London in 1975, falling in love and then marrying in Iran in 1977 the story is initially of how life was in the time of the Shah and then the rising storm of unrest as the country erupted into full blown revolution culminating in the change of regime in early 1979. Following this the events of the first four years of the Islamic Republic and the rapidly changing cast of personalities involved are described in conjunction with the US hostage crisis, other revolutionary events and war all taking place in the same country whilst a major construction project involving large numbers of expatriates was ongoing in its own little world. In addition the effect of the upheavals on everyday life are described together with the abrupt termination of this in 1983.

Independence of East Timor
This book is a history of the struggle for independence after East Timor was invaded by Indonesia in 1975. The occupation, which lasted 24 years, was immediately resisted through guerrilla warfare and clandestine resistance. A continuum of effort between the armed freedom fighters in the mountains, the resilience of urban supporters, and international activism and support eventually brought about liberation in September 1999. Given that the Timor rebels did not have a land border with a friendly state, had no external supplier of weapons and no liberated area in which to recover between guerrilla operations, their successful resistance is unique in the history of guerrilla warfare and independence struggles. Equally uncommon was an unexpected weapon in the struggle -- a remarkable display of strategic non-violent action. This is the first study to integrate all the major factors in East Timor's independence struggle. The multi-dimensional perspectives addressed in this volume include Indonesian, US and Australian diplomacy; Indonesian military operations and activities against the populace; East Timorese resistance at all social levels; human rights abuses; the issue of oil; and international diplomacy resulting from global solidarity activism.

Florestan Fernandes’ Critical Sociology
This book intends to familiarise the reader with the political and sociological thought of Florestan Fernandes, covering the range of his research themes and socialist militancy between the 1940s and 1990s.Considered the founding father of sociology in Brazil, Florestan Fernandes’ work is essential for an understanding of the historical and political dilemmas of Brazilian and Latin American societies. His main themes encompass research on folklore, indigenous peoples, race relations between blacks and whites, sociological theory, education, underdevelopment, dependence, Latin American dictatorships, and the Brazilian "re-democratization" after 1980, providing a new interpretation of Latin America from the point of view of the lumpen social strata.Following Mannheim's inspiration, the present work is inserted in the field of sociology of knowledge. It takes an original approach to the ideas of Florestan Fernandes based on the notion of a lumpen thought style. This book is a key resource for readers learning about the history of the social sciences in Latin America, and about the political dilemmas of Latin American societies.
