Willie Mangum and the North Carolina Whigs in the Age of Jackson
In the 1820s, young congressman Willie Mangum imbibed the political philosophy of North Carolina's senior senator Nathaniel Macon, the ""prophet of pure republicanism."" From his election in 1824, Mangum was at the epicenter of national and state government. In the 1830s, he emerged as leader of an opposition party-the Whigs-and became an opponent of Andrew Jackson and his Democratic Party.Mangum's career offers insight into the ideology and politics of North Carolina's Whigs. Opposition to executive power was fundamental to the Whig platform but in North Carolina the party was a coalition melding the Old Republicans' creed with the National Republican economic agenda touted by Henry Clay, a combination that enabled them to dominate. Mangum and the Carolina Whigs have received little attention from scholars. This book traces their rapid rise to power and their even more rapid fall in the years prior to the Civil War.

Vice and the Victorians
Vice and the Victorians explores the ways the Victorian world gave meanings to the word 'vice', and the role this complex notion played in shaping society. Mike Huggins provides a richer and more nuanced understanding of a term that, despite its vital importance to the Victorians, has thus far lacked a clear definition. Each chapter explores a different facet of vice. Firstly, the book seeks to define exactly what vice meant to the Victorians, exploring how the language of vice was used as a tool to beat down opposition and dissent. It considers the cultural geography and spatial dimensions of vice in the public and private spheres, before moving on to look at specific vices: the unholy trinity of drink, sex and gambling. Finally, it shifts from vice to virtue and the efforts of moral reformers, and reassesses the relationship between vice and respectability in Victorian life.In his lively and engaging discussion, Mike Huggins draws on a range of theory and exploits a wide variety of texts and representations from the periodical press, parliamentary reports and Acts, novels, obscene publications, paintings and posters, newspapers, sermons, pamphlets and investigative works. This will be an illuminating text for undergraduates studying Victorian Britain as well as anyone wishing to gain a more nuanced understanding of Victorian society.

Papers of George Washington Volume 30
This volume 30 of the Revolutionary War series opens in January 1781 with a mutiny in the Continental army’s Pennsylvania regiments, presenting Gen. George Washington with one of the most formidable crises of the war. Although a negotiated settlement resolved the problem, he feared the implications for discipline in the rest of the army. Washington’s concerns were well founded, as news reached him that the New Jersey troops had followed suit. He sent a detachment of New England troops to put down the rebellion. In the meantime, a coastal storm that damaged British ships offered Washington an opportunity to defeat and capture Benedict Arnold, now in command of British and Loyalist troops in Virginia. The subsequent joint naval and land offensive with the French shifted the main theater of war from New York to the southern states, foreshadowing the coming campaign of Yorktown.

Bridges and Bodies
The second book in the Ben Time Mystery series, Bridges and Bodies follows Ben Time as he finds himself in a position to investigate the not-so-coincidental deaths of two railroad men. Ben Time is a locomotive engineer and the union chaplain, fighting to demonstrate Christian principles while working with modern-day railroad men on a day-to-day basis. One of the murdered railroad men was alive and well the day before the body was found, even working with Ben directly. The passage of a single night changed everything when Ben spots a ghostly apparition drop from the side of the local haunted railroad bridge. Much to Ben’s surprise, another body is discovered under the railroad bridge five miles West. As Ben looks into the deaths of these men, he hopes to exonerate several friends and coworkers who are on the suspect list, one of whom he had just had an opportunity to pray with. But solving these crimes proves to be a daunting task for the trainman as he begins wondering if he’ll be able to clear his friends after all.In this thrilling sequel to Murder and Misconception, T.A. Huggins once again compellingly depicts modern-day railroad life and the ensuing conflict experienced by men living with Christian principles in a secular environment as readers are drawn into Ben Time’s world and the mystery of the bodies under the bridges.
