Launching Your Kids for Life
Ask any parent what they want most for their child, and most likely you'll hear the same answer again and again: to see their children grow up into happy, healthy adults whose lives count for something. But ask those same parents what they're doing to equip their children for such a life and you'll get embarrassed silence. Finally, parents can find help for this crucial task in a book that is encouraging, easy to grasp, and filled with great practical suggestions. In Launching Your Kids for Life, Bob and Cheryl Reccord liken the job of equipping your children for success in life to the procedure that NASA undertakes to prepare for a shuttle launch. The Reccords, along with their friends Dr. Tommy Holloway, past director of the NASA Space Program and three-time shuttle astronaut David Leetsma point out that just as the shuttle must break through the Earth's gravitational force into space, so too must children break free into adulthood. But our children can't do it on their own. They need our help. They need us to equip them, to prepare them, to help them discover their life's mission, and to celebrate the milestones along the way. If we learn how to do this, then we can be sure that they can fly anywhere their wings will take them.

Big Time
For some of us, Big Ten basketball will always mean the original ten great teams that comprised the league. But for all fans, the teams during this time period bring back memories of some of the best teams and players that have ever played basketball. In the sweeping history of two decades of Big Ten basketball, Murry Nelson chronicles the conference when it was the most successful of any basketball conference in the nation. Coaches such as Lute Olson, Lou Henson, Johnny Orr, Gene Keady, and Bob Knight led the nation in national titles, influencing the league with their playing styles, changes to rules, recruitment and, of course, intensity. Follow Joe Barry Carroll as he leads the Purdue Boilermakers to the Final Four in 1980, Steve Alford as he takes the Hoosiers to a national championship win, Kent Benson's undefeated conference record, and Magic Johnson as he leads the Michigan State Spartans to multiple titles and championships. With chapters devoted to each season from 1972 to 1992, you can relive the action as if you were attending the games.

Young man with a red tie
It is November 1963. The white police state has captured almost all the underground leaders of the struggle against apartheid, including Nelson Mandela, and put them on trial on charges that carry the death penalty. Bob Hepple, a 29-year-old lawyer, is making his hazardous escape from South Africa into Bechuanaland, the neighbouring British Protectorate, in order to avoid being called as a state witness. He has acted as Mandela’s legal adviser and has been a lifeline to the underground leaders, with whom he was arrested on 11 July 1963 at Liliesleaf Farm, Rivonia, and detained without trial. He has managed, in Mandela’s words about him, to ‘outwit the enemy’, and now faces the bitter revenge of Dr Yutar, the state prosecutor. In this memoir of these dramatic events, Bob Hepple throws fresh light on the character of Mandela and other leaders and on the controversies surrounding the emergence of the South African Communist Party and its ‘secret’ resolution in December 1960 to begin the armed freedom struggle. There is a first-hand account of Mandela’s period as the ‘Black Pimpernel’, his 1962 trial for incitement, and of the Rivonia raid in 1963. He gives a graphic account of the psychological effects of interrogation in solitary detention without trial, and of the difficult personal choices he had to make. Bob Hepple tells his story against the background of the experiences of his childhood and youth in a racist society. These experiences led him – described by a pro-government newspaper as ‘a young man with a red tie’ – to play a role as a student activist against racial segregation in the universities, an adviser and assistant to the virtually illegal multi-racial trade unions, a lawyer defending political victims of the police state, and to a lifetime fighting for human rights.

Bold as Love
As Christians, we’re called to love our neighbors—all our neighbors. But is that even possible? And can we truly love them well?People often think of their neighbors as those already belonging to their “tribe” or community. It’s safe, it’s easy, and it doesn’t often cause conflict—politically or religiously. But in today’s world, everyone and everything is interconnected globally in an ever-changing cultural landscape, while religious strife runs rampant. Is it feasible for Christians to live their faith boldly and lovingly while entering into a true relationship with “neighbors” of other faiths, both locally and globally? In Bold as Love, Pastor Bob Roberts shows you what it looks like to live out your faith daily in the global public square among people of other faiths—Jews, Muslims, atheists, Hindus, Buddhists. While he admits that it can be challenging to engage people of other faiths whose beliefs are as strong as yours, he demonstrates how to enter into this critical dialogue in a radical yet loving way. “We have to learn to speak with one conversation and give the same message everywhere to everyone,” he says. “We are commanded to love God and love others. And sometimes that requires risky boldness.”Roberts invites you to respond to this call to live a life of fearless and loving engagement with the world. So take the risk! Your faith wasn’t made to live in isolation. It’s something you do face-to-face, heart-to-heart, hand-to-hand. Whether you are in a suburb of Houston or a village in India, put away the fear and suspicion and, instead, answer the call to radically love others the way God loves. And get ready to see your life and the lives of those you touch—your family, your community, even your enemies—transformed!

From Small Screen to Vinyl
From its infancy, television networks and studios explore others avenues to increase their revenues. Conveniently enough, several film studios and production companies—MGM, MTM, Columbia/Screen Gems, Talent Associates, Warner Brothers—had their own record label divisions. The obvious benefit was cross promotion: a television series could be plugged on the record and the record could be promoted on the TV show. Though few and far between, several television performers went on to become major recording stars. Ricky Nelson started as a child actor on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet before dominating rock and pop charts. Johnny Crawford of The Rifleman, Walter Brennan of The Real McCoys, and even Bruce Willis of Moonlighting all scored Top Ten hit singles. But these were just the standouts from the hundreds of TV actors who recorded songs, and the stories behind their records are simply fascinating. In From Small Screen to Vinyl: A Guide to TV Stars Who Made Records 1950-2000, author Bob Leszczak offers a look at hundreds of stars who performed double duty: as a television performer as well as a recording artist. He looks not only at the show and the performer but the behind-the-scenes dramas that unfolded as each attempted to tackle the two different mediums. Through his interviews with many of these multitaskers, the author has uncovered new, and mostly never before known facts about those who sought to conquer the world of vinyl. As Leszczak stresses, most eagerly embraced the opportunity to record, while others saw it as a necessary evil—the result of contractual obligations or industry pressures. Entries are listed alphabetically from Nick Adams (of The Rebel) to Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. (of 77 Sunset Strip). Also included are over 80 photos of these rare releases taken from the author’s private collection. For a new look at your old favorites, From Small Screen to Vinyl, will let you see that just because one is a TV star does not mean that he or she does not have the ability to expand beyond their acting prowess.Baby boomers, fans of classic hits radio, and devotees of classic TV programs will find From Small Screen to Vinyl a treasure trove of TV and record trivia—and no TV or music library can be considered complete without it.

How I Played the Game
Byron Nelson was one of golf's greatest legends. He was one of the finest golfers ever to pick up a putter, and the man who had the most magnificent year any golfer has ever had—1945, when he won an incredible eighteen PGA tournaments, including eleven in a row, and finished second in seven others. How I Played the Game is the beautifully told tale, in his own words, of a man determined to be the best ever: his hardscrabble rural Texas upbringing and his near-death experience with typhoid fever; his early years as a caddie at Fort Worth's Glen Garden Country Club (where as a 15-year-old he beat another young caddie named Ben Hogan in the Caddie Championship); the lean years as an amateur and as a young pro during the Depression; and the golden years of the 1940s, when he invented the modern golf swing and forged the legend of "Lord Byron."Even after his sudden retirement (the real reason for which is finally revealed here) his impact on the game never lessened. Besides his many years as an insightful TV golf commentator, he was mentor to several future golf champions, Ken Venturi and Tom Watson among them. And he continued to play top-caliber golf with the greats of the game, like Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, and Arnold Palmer, and some who were less than great—President Eisenhower, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, and a host of others.Laced throughout with scores of priceless stories, anecdotes, opinions, and even golf tips, and with an in-depth, event-by-event recreation of his golden year, 1945, How I Played the Game is golf writing and remembrance of the highest order—irresistible reading for every golfer and fan.
