Functional Condensation Polymers
Although in nature the vast majority of polymers are condensation polymers, much publicity has been focused on functionalized vinyl polymers. Functional Condensation Polymers fulfills the need to explore these polymers which form an increasingly important and diverse foundation in the search for new materials in the twentyfirst century. Some of the advantages condensation polymers hold over vinyl polymers include offering different kinds of binding sites, their ability to be made biodegradable, and their different reactivities with various reagents under diverse reaction conditions. They also offer better tailoring of end-products, different tendencies (such as fiber formation), and different physical and chemical properties. Some of the main areas emphasized include dendrimers, control release of drugs, nanostructure materials, controlled biomedical recognition, and controllable electrolyte and electrical properties.

Condensed Matter Theories
This volume gathers the invited talks of the XIII International Work shop on Condensed Matter Theories which took place in Campos do Jordao near Sao Paulo, Brazil, August 6-12, 1989. It contains contributions in a wide variety of fields including neutral quantum and classical fluids, electronic systems, composite materials, plasmas, atoms, molecules and nuclei, and as this year's workshop reflected the natural preoccupation in materials science with its spectacular prospect for mankind, room tempera ture super-conductivity. All topics are treated from a common viewpoint: that of many-body physics, whether theoretical or simu1ational. Since the very first workshop, held at the prestigious Instituto de Fisica Teorica in Sao Paulo, and organized by the same organizer of the 1989 workshop, Professor Valdir Casaca Aguilera-Navarro, the meeting has taken place annually six times in Latin America, four in Europe and three in the United States. Its principal objective has been to innitiate and nurture collaborative research networks of scientists interested in the IDultidisciplinary aspects of many-body theory applied to problems in con densed-matter physics. Financial as well as moral support is gratefully appreciated by all: of the CLAF in Rio, the CNPq in Brasilia, the FAPESP and the FUNDUNESP in Sao Paulo, and the U.S. Army Research Office in Durham, NC, USA.

Field Theories in Condensed Matter Physics
The application of field theoretic techniques to problems in condensed matter physics has generated an array of concepts and mathematical techniques to attack a range of problems such as the theory of quantum phase transitions, the quantum Hall effect, and quantum wires. While concepts such as the renormalization group, topology, and bosonization have become necessary tools for the condensed matter physicist, enough open problems and interesting applications remain to drive much activity in this area in the coming years. Field Theories in Condensed Matter Physics presents a comprehensive survey of the concepts, techniques, and applications of the field. Written by experts and carefully edited, the book provides the necessary background for graduate students entering the area of modern condensed matter physics. It also supplies field theorists with a valuable introduction to the areas in condensed matter physics where field theoretic concepts can be fruitfully applied.

Transport in Condensed Matter
Transport in Condensed Matter offers a clear and comprehensive introduction to the principles that govern how charge and spin move through condensed-matter systems. The book opens with linear response theory, Green's functions, and the Boltzmann transport equation, essential tools for understanding electronic behaviour in solids. It then develops perturbation theory and diagrammatic methods, followed by a detailed treatment of impurity scattering, a crucial but often neglected ingredient in realistic transport calculations. A major strength of the book is its coverage of contemporary themes, including topological transport and the integer and anomalous quantum Hall effects, transport in non-Hermitian systems and magnon transport, spanning ferromagnets, antiferromagnets, noncollinear orders, and skyrmion-based phenomena. Additional chapters introduce the memory-function formalism and the emerging field of electron hydrodynamics using the Navier-Stokes equation. Key features include: A self-contained introduction to many-body transport methods.Clear derivations of all major equations and results.Coverage of modern research topics such as non-Hermitian transport, topological magnons, nonlinear Hall effects, and strange metals.Connects traditional frameworks with emerging directions in modern condensed-matter physics.Appendices, which review essential background concepts, making the text suitable for readers transitioning into the field. Suitable for both researchers and graduate students, the book offers a unified overview of transport phenomena in electronic and magnetic systems, connecting many-body techniques with some of the most active areas in modern condensed matter physics and quantum materials.

Gateway to Condensed Matter Physics and Molecular Biophysics
This new volume provides the necessary background material and brings into focus the fundamental concepts essential for advanced research in theoretical condensed matter physics and its interface with molecular biophysics. It is the outcome of the author’s long teaching and research career in theoretical condensed matter physics and related interdisciplinary fields. The author aims to motivate students to take up research in condensed matter physics and march toward new frontiers. He writes: “My long understanding of students’ attitude and orientation brings me to the conclusion that many of them are quite excited about the developments in the frontier research areas at the beginning of their career; however, a sizeable fraction of them start losing interest gradually as they are often unable to connect these developments with the basic physics they have studied. I have tried to fill this gap in this book.”To this end, special care has been taken to balance the physical concepts and mathematical expressions as well as proper mixing of theoretical and experimental aspects. He starts with the very well-known elementary ideas or basic concepts and goes forward so as to remove the apparent conceptual and technical gap between the known laws and various interesting, challenging, and novel experimental results and effects, some of which are amongst the latest discoveries.Key features:• Introduces a new way of looking at various important and fundamental phenomena in condensed matter from the perspective of microscopic theory• Explores a new interface of quantum condensed matter physics and molecular biophysics, highlighting research potentialities• Addresses the crucial questions surrounding these phenomena when they are mutually coexisting or competing in real condensed matter systems or materials, from both theoretical and experimental angles• Deals with biological molecules and some of their properties and processes and discusses the modeling of these with the help of condensed matter physics and statistical physics• Emphasizes fundamental concepts, particularly in condensed matter physics and making proper use of them

Symmetry and Condensed Matter Physics
Unlike existing texts, this book blends for the first time three topics in physics - symmetry, condensed matter physics and computational methods - into one pedagogical textbook. It includes new concepts in mathematical crystallography; experimental methods capitalizing on symmetry aspects; non-conventional applications such as Fourier crystallography, color groups, quasicrystals and incommensurate systems; as well as concepts and techniques behind the Landau theory of phase transitions. Adopting a computational approach to the application of group theoretical techniques to solving symmetry related problems, it dramatically alleviates the need for intensive calculations usually found in the presentation of symmetry. Writing computer programs helps the student achieve a firm understanding of the underlying concepts, and sample programs, based on Mathematica, are presented throughout the book. Containing over 150 exercises, this textbook is ideal for graduate students in condensed matter physics, materials science, and chemistry. Solutions and computer programs are available online at www.cambridge.org/9780521828451.

Topology in Condensed Matter
This volume is based on the talks and lectures given by the participants of the 3-month seminar program "Topology in Condensed Matter," which was held in the MPIPKS Dresden, 8 May-31 July 2002 under the scienti?c direction of Professors M. Kleman, S. Novikov, and myself. The aim of this program was to discuss recent applications of topology to several areas in condensed matter physics and related ?elds like biology. The last 30 years of the development of modern physics a?rmed two important ideas. The ?rst is the e?cient applications of topology in physics. One should mention applications in condensed matter, such as classi?cation of defects and textures in liquid crystals and super?uid liquids, the role of entangibility in polymer physics and DNA structures. The second tendency is also very prevalent. Some important discoveries in particle physics and condensed m- ter led to new and unpredictable questions in pure mathematics. We refer to the invention of monopoles and instantons in quantum ?eld theory, q- sicrystals ?uid membranes of high genus, fullerenes (C ,C , etc. ), and so on 60 90 in condensed matter. The number of such applications in the last years has increased substantially. The papers presented in this volume and the next one "Topology in - ology" re?ect the spectrum of topics discussed. Besides original papers, a mini-course in topology for physicists and biologists was organized. These lectures will be published in the second volume.

Condenser Capacities and Symmetrization in Geometric Function Theory
This is the first systematic presentation of the capacitory approach and symmetrization in the context of complex analysis. The content of the book is original – the main part has not been covered by existing textbooks and monographs. After an introduction to the theory of condenser capacities in the plane, the monotonicity of the capacity under various special transformations (polarization, Gonchar transformation, averaging transformations and others) is established, followed by various types of symmetrization which are one of the main objects of the book. By using symmetrization principles, some metric properties of compact sets are obtained and some extremal decomposition problems are solved. Moreover, the classical and present facts for univalent and multivalent meromorphic functions are proven. This book will be a valuable source for current and future researchers in various branches of complex analysis and potential theory.

Lecturers from Asia, Australia, Europe and North America gave a total of twenty-nine lectures which were spread over the five days. Unfortunately we were not able to include in this volume the lectures of S. Das Sarma from the University of Maryland on "Non-Equilibrium Growth as a Self-Organised Phenomenon" due to constraints of time. The workshops have been held annually since 1991 in Sydney, each covering a novel research area in condensed matter physics that is of topical interest. Australia has a strong tradition of research in condensed matter physics. The workshops are jointly organised by the School of Physics at the University of New South Wales (Sydney) and the Department of Theoretical Physics, Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering at the Australian National University (Canberra). The late Gordon God frey was an Associate Professor of Physics at the University of New South Wales. He bequeathed his estate for the promotion and teaching of theoretical physics within the university. The primary purpose of each workshop is to expose post-graduate students in physics to both informal interaction and formal lectures from recognised international leaders in topical research areas. Past experience has demonstrated again and again that to be informed about a new field there is no substitute for personal contact and interaction.

Topology and Condensed Matter Physics
This book introduces aspects of topology and applications to problems in condensed matter physics. Basic topics in mathematics have been introduced in a form accessible to physicists, and the use of topology in quantum, statistical and solid state physics has been developed with an emphasis on pedagogy. The aim is to bridge the language barrier between physics and mathematics, as well as the different specializations in physics. Pitched at the level of a graduate student of physics, this book does not assume any additional knowledge of mathematics or physics. It is therefore suited for advanced postgraduate students as well. A collection of selected problems will help the reader learn the topics on one's own, and the broad range of topics covered will make the text a valuable resource for practising researchers in the field. The book consists of two parts: one corresponds to developing the necessary mathematics and the other discusses applications to physical problems. The section on mathematics is a quick, but more-or-less complete, review of topology. The focus is on explaining fundamental concepts rather than dwelling on details of proofs while retaining the mathematical flavour. There is an overview chapter at the beginning and a recapitulation chapter on group theory. The physics section starts with an introduction and then goes on to topics in quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics of polymers, knots, and vertex models, solid state physics, exotic excitations such as Dirac quasiparticles, Majorana modes, Abelian and non-Abelian anyons. Quantum spin liquids and quantum information-processing are also covered in some detail.
