Ek kan dink aan ’n hele paar kinders (en grootmense!) wat baie opgewonde gaan wees om ’n nuwe avontuur van die Suid-Afrikaanse ontdekkingsreisiger, Riaan Manser, onder oë te kry. Hy het voorheen geboei met My eerste Afrika-avontuur. Toe was daar My eerste wilde eiland-avontuur. Sy volgende teiken was die Land van vuur en ys, en van lig en duisternis.
Ysland het geblyk sy grootste uitdaging te wees. Om die vaart rondom die eiland aan te durf in ’n oopsee-kayak, genaamd “Inspirasie” is bemoeilik deur die feit dat sy roeimaat geen ervaring het van so ’n kayak nie. Boonop is Dan serebraal gestremd en sou Riaan dus verantwoordelik wees om albei van hulle veilig te hou.
Soos die vorige twee publikasies, is My eerste Ysland-avontuur propvol inligting oor die eiland, sy tradisionele kosse, diere en ander interessante feite. Die kleurvolle boek spog met talle foto’s asook die besondere en prettige illustrasies deur Martinus van Tee. Daar is volop afwisseling in die lettertipes en die teks is kindervriendelik.
‘n Volle bladsy word afgestaan aan praktiese wenke vir diegene wat ’n reis na Ysland beplan. Nadat Riaan en Dan die elemente, walvisse, arktiese roofmeeue en ‘n aktiewe vulkaan beleef het, kan hy beslis met gesag waarsku en raad gee.
Die Ysland-avontuur is ’n besielende getuigskrif van wat vermag kan word wanneer iemand waag om ’n droom te jaag en te waag buite sy gemaksone, ten spyte van groot uitdagings. Met sy ekspidisies poog Riaan Manser om te inspireer, en hy kry dit baie goed reg.

Hoe gemaak om haar hart te bewaar?

’n Jaar nadat haar verlowing misluk het, koop Marguerite van Wyk Die Blou Turksvy, ’n besige winkel op haar grootworddorp, Viljoensvlei. Sy het groot planne om dit uit te brei en vaste voornemens om “eerder kaalvoet oor die naaste berg (te loop) as om ooit weer die gedagte te kry om haar aan ’n man te verbind.” (p. 11)
Op Engels is daar ’n uitdrukking wat lui: famous last words. Dit is wat mens spoedig van haar voorneme kan sê wanneer Bernard Visagie op die toneel verskyn. Die aantrekkingskrag tussen dié twee gee ook aanleiding tot ’n interessante dimensie in die storielyn, want dit word duidelik dat daar ’n vete van meer as dertig jaar bestaan tussen die Van Wyks en die Visagies. Die skrywer hou mens aan die wonder daaroor, terwyl Bernard en Marguerite hulle eie stryd het met hulle gevoelens vir mekaar.
Die oulike titel kom by monde van die einste boer, Bernard: “Miskien gee iemand jou eendag ’n rede om te bly.” (p.117) Die held kry volpunte by my, ’n man uit een stuk, standvastig en met goeie maniere. Die romanse is uitgegee in die sub-genre, Plaas, en het goed daarin geslaag om my aandag te behou. Ek het juis deesdae so ’n swakte vir boere en boere se vrouens!

Die uitdagings in 'n plattelandse gemeenskap realisties geskilder

Berdine se verhaal en die lewe wat sy vir haarself kom uitkerf op die platteland, hervat presies daar waar die vorige boek afgesluit het. Dieter Daneel het dwarsdeur die eerste twee boeke in die reeks, Die lewe wat ek jou gegee het, en Die skuiling, die leser laat wonder of hy enige romantiese aspirasies het met Berdine. Dit tesame met die feit dat mense beweer dat hy ’n onbekende verlede het. Die onwagte soen buite die hospitaal op De Aar, laat die leser, maar beslis ook vir Berdine, in die duister. Veral wanneer hy ’n lae profiel hou.
Die skrywer slaag weer goed daarin om die probleme in ’n gemeenskap soos hierdie, met skrikwekkende realiteit oor te dra. Daar is drankmisbruik, werkloosheid, ellende en verval, en droogte wat mens en dier aftakel. Die behoefte aan heenkome vir getraumatiseerde vroue en kinders het vir Berdine en Melanie, die predikant, beweeg om ’n fasiliteit, wat nou ingewy word en bekend staan as Die Bertha Human-skuiling, in te rig en in gebruik te neem.
Te midde van die lewensdrama wat daagliks rondom hulle afspeel, toon Melanie toenemend tekens van uitbranding, terwyl Berdine self baie hooi op haar vurk het. Verder is Berdine steeds nie gemaklik om te deel oor haar geloof wat sy maar onlangs herontdek het nie.
Helena Hugo is een van ons gewildste skrywers van geestelike fiksie. Ek sal beslis aanbeveel dat die boeke van hierdie reeks in volgorde gelees word. Dit word uitgegee deur Lux Verbi, ’n druknaam van NB Uitgewers.
