Several books have documented Durban’s significant buildings, mostly on a technical level. We have selected a range of the most interesting Art Deco buildings, photographed in bright sunlight and blue skies to bring out their colourful glory.

The Durban Art Deco Society has interacted with building owners, residents, and architects, and conducted guided visits and walks, public displays, and student competitions on the Art Deco theme. In this process it has amassed a considerable amount of information and photographs of Durban’s Art Deco, which is now being put to use in this book.

Whilst not aiming to be comprehensive, the book seeks rather to be visually engaging, with interesting information about a selection of buildings in different locations serving different purposes.

The Durban Art Deco Society was founded in 1999 with the objective of creating awareness of Durban’s fine heritage of over 100 buildings in the Art Deco style, to promote their conservation and advise on maintenance. Twenty-five years later, the Society is still busy documenting our many buildings, vetting and advising on modifications, and generally encouraging preservation of this heritage.
