Salonica, City of Ghosts
The history of a bewilderingly exotic city, rarely written about: five hundred years of clashing cultures and peoples, from the glories of Suleiman the Magnificent to its nadir under Nazi occupation. Salonica is the point where the wonders and horrors of the Orient and Europe have met over the centuries. Written with a Pepysian sense of the texture of daily life in the city through the ages, and with breathtakingly detailed historical research, Salonica evokes the sights, smells, habits, songs and responses of a unique city and its inhabitants. The history of Salonica is one of forgotten alternatives and wrong choices, of identities assumed and discarded. For centuries Jews, Christians and Muslims have succeeded each other in ascendancy, each people intent on erasing the presence of their predecessors, and the result is a city of extraordinarily rich cultural traditions and memories of extreme violence and genocide, one that sits on the overlapping hinterlands of both Europe and the East. Mark Mazower has written a work of astonishing depth and originality about this remarkable city. Magnificently researched and beautifully written, it is more than a book about a place; it studies in detail the way in which three great faiths and peoples have inhabited the same territory, and how smooth transitions and adaptations have been interwoven with violent endings and new beginnings.

Atrocity Exhibition
A prophetic and experimental masterpiece by J. G. Ballard, the acclaimed author of ‘Crash’ and ‘Super-Cannes’. This edition includes explanatory notes from the author. The irrational, all-pervading violence of the modern world is the subject of this extraordinary tour de force. The central character’s dreams are haunted by images of John F. Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe, dead astronauts and car-crash victims as he traverses the screaming wastes of nervous breakdown. Seeking his sanity, he casts himself in a number of roles: H-bomber pilot, presidential assassin, crash victim, psychopath. Finally, through the black, perverse magic of violence he transcends his psychic turmoil to find the key to a bizarre new sexuality. In this revised edition, Ballard has added extensive annotation that help to unlock many of the mysteries of one of the most prophetic, enigmatic and original works of the late twentieth century. This edition is part of a new commemorative series of Ballard’s works, featuring introductions from a number of his admirers (including Neil Gaiman, Iain Sinclair, James Lever and Ali Smith) and brand-new cover designs.

Apartheid's Granddaughter
Lidia Rauch was born at the crossroads of South Africa’s past and present – the granddaughter of one of apartheid’s longest-serving ministers, raised in a world constructed for her comfort, yet called to reckon with its cost. Her story moves between privilege and pain: from a childhood marked by fracture to a career within the machinery of government, to the long, uneasy road of reckoning with what it means to be white, Afrikaans, and free in a country still carrying the weight of its past. In this fearless and tender memoir, Lidia turns toward the truth – dismantling the myths she was raised on, confronting the discomfort she once avoided, and choosing responsibility over denial. Along the way she encounters the people and moments that changed her – from the townships of Cape Town to the rooms where power is brokered – and discovers that freedom is not a gift bestowed by the system, but a commitment we make to one another. Apartheid’s Granddaughter is not a story of guilt or absolution, but of courage and repair. It’s an invitation to white South Africans to face their inheritance with honesty and courage. Both intimate and universal, this book reminds us that transformation is possible – and that healing begins when we choose to see ourselves and one another.

Life at the Bottom
Now in a 25th anniversary edition, featuring a foreword from bestselling author Rob Henderson of the Manhattan Institute and a new postscript from Theodore Dalrymple."A classic for our times. It is as fundamental for understanding the world we live in as the three R's." -Thomas SowellAs a British psychiatrist who treated the poor in a slum hospital and a prison in England, Theodore Dalrymple had seemingly seen it all. Yet, in listening to and observing his patients, he has been continually astonished by the latest twist of depravity that exceeds even his own considerable experience. Dalrymple’s key insight in Life at the Bottom is that long-term poverty is caused not by economics but by a dysfunctional set of values, one that is continually reinforced by an elite culture searching for victims. This culture persuades those at the bottom that they have no responsibility for their actions and are not the molders of their own lives. Drawn from the pages of the cutting-edge political and cultural quarterly City Journal, Dalrymple's book draws upon scores of eye-opening, true-life vignettes that are by turns hilariously funny, chillingly horrifying, and all too revealing--sometimes all at once. And Dalrymple writes in prose that transcends journalism and achieves the quality of literature.

Sandstone Houses of the Eastern Free State
Discover the timeless beauty and architectural heritage of the Eastern Free State in this superb, multilayered book from Otterley Press. In 320 pages of informative text and striking images, Sandstone Houses of the Eastern Free State takes readers on an enchanting road trip through the region. Sandstone Houses of the Eastern Free State will take the form of a road trip through the Eastern Free State, commencing in the Swinburne/Harrismith area, then moving to Clarens, Fouriesburg and on to Ficksburg, Ladybrand, Tweespruit, Wepener, Clocolan and Zastron, as well as to lesser-known villages and settlements in the area. Richly illustrated, and featuring a variety of houses, including some very small cottages dating back to 1830, the book will take you on a tour of this glorious countryside where sandstone cliffs bask in honey-gold hues. Each chapter offers insights into the craftsmanship, historical significance and family stories associated with the remarkable sandstone houses scattered across a rugged landscape. The quarries in Fouriesburg, Ladybrand and Ficksburg provided the stone for these unique houses and, even today, the stone is carved using the same techniques that were employed a hundred years ago. The sandstone utilised in the building of the houses – which range from small to legendary – is known for its distinctive character and high quality. The houses, chronicled by examining both the architecture and the stories of people who lived in the homes (for the two are intertwined), is written by local experts in each area. As time moves on many of these dwellings are falling into disrepair, with the potential loss of their legacy. The historical record of a selection of houses is preserved within the pages of this book.

She Has Her Mother's Laugh
SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2018 BAILLIE GIFFORD PRIZE FOR NON-FICTIONShe Has Her Mother’s Laugh presents a profoundly original perspective on what we pass along from generation to generation. Charles Darwin played a crucial part in turning heredity into a scientific question, and yet he failed spectacularly to answer it. The birth of genetics in the early 1900s seemed to do precisely that. Gradually, people translated their old notions about heredity into a language of genes. As the technology for studying genes became cheaper, millions of people ordered genetic tests to link themselves to missing parents, to distant ancestors, to ethnic identities . . .But, award-winning science writer Carl Zimmer argues, heredity isn’t just about genes that pass from parent to child. Heredity continues within our own bodies, as a single cell gives rise to trillions of cells that make up our bodies. We say we inherit genes from our ancestors but we inherit other things that matter as much or more to our lives, from microbes to technologies we use to make life more comfortable. We need a new definition of what heredity is and, through Carl Zimmer’s lucid exposition and storytelling, this resounding tour de force delivers it.Weaving together historical and current scientific research, his own experience with his two daughters, and the kind of original reporting expected of one of the world’s best science journalists, Zimmer ultimately unpacks urgent bioethical quandaries arising from new biomedical technologies, but also long-standing presumptions about who we really are and what we can pass on to future generations.
