Powerless is the third book in the Chestnut Springs series by Elsie Silver. Once again, I loved returning to the world of Chestnut Springs. Familiar faces make appearances throughout the story without ever taking the spotlight away from our new main characters. Reading these books feels a little like putting on your favourite comfy tracksuit pants – warm, familiar, and impossible not to love.
When Sloane’s wedding day goes spectacularly wrong, her childhood friend Jasper Gervais is there to help her pick up the pieces. The two embark on an impromptu road trip as they try to escape their heartbreak and the complications of their lives, but somewhere along the way their lifelong friendship begins to become something more. The timing isn’t perfect, and both are carrying wounds from their pasts, but perhaps they’ve been exactly what the other has needed all along.
Sloane and Jasper are both such likeable characters, and watching their friendship slowly blossom into something more is heartwarming. Their chemistry, banter, and unwavering support for one another make this friends-to-lovers romance an absolute delight to read. Jasper, in particular, completely stole my heart, especially because I had seen little scenes with him in the previous books and couldn’t wait to meet him.
I thoroughly enjoyed my latest visit to Chestnut Springs and can’t wait to pick up the next book in the series. If you enjoy runaway brides, friends-to-lovers romances, road trips, lovable characters, and plenty of banter, this one is definitely for you.
