The award-winning author of Gods of Jade and Shadow (one of the 100 best fantasy novels of all time, TIME magazine) returns with a mesmerising feminist Gothic fantasy, in which a glamorous young socialite discovers the haunting secrets of a beautiful old mansion in 1950s Mexico. He is trying to poison me. You must come for me, Noemí. You have to save me.When glamorous socialite Noemí Taboada receives a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging to be rescued from a mysterious doom, it's clear something is desperately amiss. Catalina has always had a flair for the dramatic, but her claims that her husband is poisoning her and her visions of restless ghosts seem remarkable, even for her.Noemí's chic gowns and perfect lipstick are more suited to cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing, but she immediately heads to High Place, a remote mansion in the Mexican countryside, determined to discover what is so affecting her cousin.Tough and smart, she possesses an indomitable will, and she is not afraid: not of her cousin's new husband, who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems to be fascinated by Noemí; and not of the house itself, which begins to invade Noemi's dreams with visions of blood and doom. Her only ally in this inhospitable abode is the family's youngest son. Shy and gentle, he seems to want to help, but might also be hiding dark knowledge of his family's past. For there are many secrets behind the walls of High Place. The family's once colossal wealth and faded mining empire kept them from prying eyes, but as Noemí digs deeper she unearths stories of violence and madness. And Noemí, mesmerized by the terrifying yet seductive world of High Place, may soon find it impossible to leave this enigmatic house behind . . .

Vier komplekse verhoudings, bietjie misdaad, baie liefde
I am amazed by this book. It is a murder mystery with suprising twists. It follows a 17 year old Pippa. Pip wants to do her EPQ school project on the Andie Bell case and throughout her project she discovers new leads that might lead her to the killer if he hasnt already been found. There isn't really romance in this book. Though I am rooting for a couple in mind. This book has loss and gain and is a must read. This book was really popular on bookyok a couple of years ago and I regret not reading it earlier. Theres also a show based on this book. Suitable for all ages really.
Debra drops (or is dropped?) into Uruk in Sumer in 2000BC. It is a shock certainly, four thousand years ago is a long time, but noone has any time for ninnies here. In between working in the fields and hand-in-hand with the 6-year-old Leqi, she listens to ancient Sumerian stories about Gilgamesh, the precursors to the bible stories, and the material that has proved to be fundamental to our literary tradition. Given the opportunity to go to school (after all she can write in a funny script already) She persuades the head priest to allow her to take young Leqi with her. The tension lies in the penurious circumstances in Uruk for peasants and the financial demands created by schooling, beautifully crafted between two narrative threads - daily life vs. the literary tradition. In the final moment of the book they slam together in a way that brought tears to my eyes. I couldn't recommend it highly enough.
