Parasites, People, and Places
Professor Gerald W. Esch is one of the world's leading ecological parasitologists. Here, he presents a series of essays on classic examples of field parasitology. The essays focus on the significance of the work and its contribution to the field but also on the people and particularly the sites at which the work took place. Taken together, the essays represent a beautifully written account of the development of an entire field of scientific endeavour spanning a period of 50 years or more. The essays are not meant to be academic in a scientific sense, but there is a great deal of science in them. The book will be of great value to all parasitologists and ecologists, but also to anyone interested in how biological field work is carried out and how it contributes to greater understanding of the natural world.

Parallelism in Logic
The potential of parallelism in logic reaches far beyond the exploitation of AND- and OR-parallelism usually found in attempts to parallelize PROLOG. This book discusses parallelism in logic and its exploitation on parallel architectures. A variety of categories of parallelism is discussed with respect to different levels of a logical formula and different ways to evaluate it. As an outcome of these investigations it is shown that modularity allows s tructuring of logic programs and meta-evaluation can be used to c ontrol the evaluation process on a parallel system. This combinat ion yields a consistent programming framework with a wide scope. Finally, the suitability of a specific evaluation mechanism for p arallel architectures is investigated.

Comparative Aspects of Extracellular Acid-Base Balance
Interest in comparative acid-base physiology has considerably grown during last decades even in the absence of major technical or conceptual advances. This is firstly because it has become clear that the extracellular acid-base state reflects the performance of many exchange functions at the organism level: respiration and ventilation of the gas exchange surfaces, metab olism, iono-and osmoregulation. Such functions are much in fluenced by ambient conditions, and the measurement of acid base parameters thus provides useful information about the organism's responses to environmental challenges. Secondly, many processes at the molecular level are now known to be pH sensitive, and acid-base regulation thus appears to be a major requirement for the functional integrity of cells and organisms. How extracellular acid-base balance can be maintained in a wide variety of animals living in different conditions is the sub ject of this book. The approach is comparative and environ mental throughout. All body fluids share similar buffer proper ties, and common physicochemical principles apply to any acid base system. However, in accord with differing designs and con straints along animal evolution, varying effector organs and mechanisms are at work to maintain an appropriate acid-base state in the organism. Particular emphasis is placed on the fun damental differences between water and air breathers and on the acid-base and respiratory problems arising at the transition from an aquatic to a terrestrial life. Also the complex array of factors influencing the acid-base state in water-dwelling animals is thoroughly discussed.

Iris Murdoch's Paradoxical Novels
The first study of the literary criticism on Murdoch's novels. The novels of the late Iris Murdoch have been compared to Shakespeare; her name has been put forward for the Nobel Prize in literature; her works have been translated into 29 languages; and no less a critic than Harold Bloom has said of her 'no other contemporary British novelist seems to me to be of Murdoch's eminence.' Collecting the major critics who have described for the last third of a century the phenomena of Iris Murdoch's fiction, this study analyzes the stories those critics tell about her artistic processes. Murdoch passed away in February 1999 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's Disease, and now it seems time to examine her critical reception. There are three major questions at the heart of this reception and at the heart of the present study: to what extent is Murdoch a philosophical novelist, a realistic novelist, a postmodern novelist? The book also deals with the question of Murdoch's reputation in the literary world: an intriguing question in view of the praise of Bloom and other critics and writers. This is the first full-length work to deal with the literary criticism on Murdoch. Barbara Stevens Heusel isprofessor of English at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri.

Paraconsistent Decision-Making Method
This book presents a novel decision-making support system based on paraconsistent annotated evidential logic, which directly handles imprecise, incomplete and contradictory data. The authors offer insights into areas such as engineering and biomedicine, as well as related fields. Decision analysis is useful in making choices when the consequences of actions are uncertain, like in business administration, where it assists in making investment decisions, and in health care, Decision analysis is also valuable when the possible actions may lead to conflicting consequences. A fundamental tenet of decision analysis is that even though the available information is incomplete, a decision must be made. Thus, analyses often contain assumptions about or estimates of missing data. The contribution that this method can provide to professionals and companies has significant relevance in terms of the impact of information systems on productivity and quality of the companies; the lack of training companies for proper planning and management of information systems; and the need for interdisciplinary treatment of several sectors of almost all related scientific areas. This book is a valuable resource for professionals seeking a competitive edge in their performance.

Intracellular Parasitism
This publication is a collection of essays on the biology of intracellular parasitisms where both bacterial and protozoan parasites are discussed. The juxtaposition of authors representing fields of research emphasizes the many common problems facing intracellular parasites and the hosts that harbor them. In addition, numerous illustrations of how different parasites and host attempt to solve these problems in different ways are provided. The book includes one or more chapters on Bdellovibrio, Chlamydia, Rickettsia, Coxiella, Legionella, Shigellae, Mycobacterium, Microsporidium, Plasmodium, and Toxoplasma. The authors frequently speculate and generalize on the subject matter discussed.

Paradoxical Psychotherapy: A Practitioner’s Guide
This book reports the results of an evidence-based case study for mental disorders which show that PTC has been very successful in bringing about deep and constant therapeutic changes. In response to the need of a more efficient approach for the treatment of psychological disorders, especially the broad spectrum of anxiety disorders, the PTC psychotherapeutic model was developed. Results of the follow-up studies reported in the present book show that the relapse rate in this model is in its lowest level compared to other psychotherapeutic approaches.Simple nature of the PTC protocol, described within the present book, allows psychotherapists and clinical practitioners to use this newly developed psychotherapy model for the treatment of mental disorders. This newly developed psychotherapy model can be applied to new developments in the field of psychotherapy theory, research, and practice. All psychotherapy associations, psychotherapy societies, psychological associations, psychotherapy societies, healthcare organizations, and academic libraries are likely to be part of the readership of this book.

Parachute Ward
A BESTSELLER IN CANADA -- NOW IN TRADE PAPERBACK! This is the story of an authentic Canadian hero, a man whose courage and determination saved the lives of countless soldiers and civilians in the besieged mountains of Yugoslavia during the Second World War. On the night of May 12, 1944, Major Colin Scott Dafoe -- a surgeon on assignment with Britain's Special Operations Executive -- parachuted into eastern Bosnia. His mission was to provide medical aid to the men and women who were Marshal Tito's Partisans. In a makeshift hospital constructed from parachutes, Dafoe operated on the maimed and wounded. And when an enemy offensive forced the Partisans into the rugged mountains and dense forests, Dafoe and his portable "parachute ward" followed, operating in the field of combat. Based on Dafoe's own record of his wartime mission, and through the reminiscences of his family, friends, and colleagues, "The Parachute Ward" recounts the saga of a truly remarkable man.

Intracellular Parasites
Volume 18 of the Subcellular Biochemistry series, which specializes in various aspects of the biochemistry of the intracellular parasites, was initially proposed by Jose Luis Avila and strongly supported by myself, as Series Editor of Sub cellular Biochemistry. Considerable assistance was received from Professor Frank Wunderlich (University of Dusseldorf) and more particularly from Dr. Michael Miles (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine) during the compilation of the list of possible chapters. Our initial aim was to present a comprehensive survey of this broad field of study. Although some interesting topics have been lost due to authors backing out late in the production schedule of the book, the manuscripts that were submitted have provided a useful over view of the subject, with notable strength within the field of Leishmania. The 13 chapters of the book have been grouped according to subject. The first five chapters deal with Leishmania and are followed by two chapters on Try ponosoma cruzi, two on the malarial parasites, and two on the Coccidia. The fmal two chapters cover the Microsporidia and chemotherapy, respectively.
