Dead Sea
A human history of one of the planet’s most iconic lakes, and the civilizations that surrounded its shores The Dead Sea is a place of many contradictions. Hot springs around the lake are famed for their healing properties, though its own waters are deadly to most lifeforms—even so, civilizations have built ancient cities and hilltop fortresses around its shores for centuries. The protagonists in its story are not only Jews and Arabs, but also Greeks, Nabataeans, Romans, Crusaders and Mamluks. Today it has become a tourist hotspot, but its drying basin is increasingly under threat. In this panoramic account, Nir Arielli explores the history of the Dead Sea from the first Neolithic settlements to the present day. Moving through the ages, Arielli reveals the religious, economic, military, and scientific importance of the lake, which has been both a source of great wealth and a site of war. The Dead Sea weaves together a tapestry of the lake’s human stories—and amidst environmental degradation and renewed conflict, makes a powerful case for why it should be saved.

Live Forever?
Time wants you dead. Not just you, but your friends, family, pets – everyone you’ve ever met…'A beautifully written book about life and death: busts myths, explores the stories of science and history, and ultimately is rich and uplifting.' Dr Adam RutherfordWith over 17,000 known diseases affecting humans, and countless poisons, carcinogens and toxins in our environment, it’s a miracle that our bodies manage to keep us alive. And that is, of course, if they don’t betray us themselves, whether through cancers or autoimmune conditions.Biomedical researcher Professor John Tregoning tells the unlikely story of how, against all odds, we manage to stay alive. Taking an organ-by-organ tour of the human body, Tregoning embarks on his own experimental quest, testing 'life-extending' diets and exercise regimes to separate fact from fad. Exploring the multitude of ways our bodies can kill us, from inherited genetic conditions, through heart attacks, arrythmias and angina, onto the delicate workings of the brain, Live Forever? offers compelling insight into how our bodies work, how we can best look after them – and ultimately live longer, healthier lives.***'I heartily recommend this deep dive into wellness... It turns out that none of us are getting out of here alive, but John has bravely put his mind and body on the line to discover the secrets of staying healthy and happy as we get older. A funny, fascinating and educative book.' Ben Willbond, co-creator of Ghosts'The idea that a book about death and dying could be a delightful read seems ridiculous, and yet John Tregoning has pulled off this trick with humour, flair and elegance.' Nessa Carey, author of The Epigenetics Revolution'An enjoyable and entertaining mixture of scientific facts about ageing and completely unscientific self-experimentation... recognizing that although none of us will live forever, there are ways we can improve our chances of living well while we are still around.' Was That Racist?
This book is a research-based approach to racial bias training that focuses on detecting the subtler forms of bias and acts as a call-to-action to push back against resistance to DEI training and even the very reality of racial bias by an author with a credible platform in this area. For years, she has researched how people from different racial groups notice bias, talk about what they see, and, most importantly, what happens if (when) they disagree. The research is clear: on average, White people typically only detect overt forms of racial bias, like the use of racial slurs, whereas people of colour detect those overt forms of bias and the subtler examples as well. The research is also clear: people of colour are the group with the more accurate perspective. White people are largely unaware of, or unwilling to acknowledge, racism, and it's hurting all of us. It makes conversations about race and racism - the exact ones we need to be having to realise a more just and equitable world - incredibly challenging. As a diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) practitioner who has consulted for some of the world's leading companies, Dr Carter sees these theoretical gaps in bias detection play out in practical scenarios every day, and wants to help. People of colour are tired and are sick of being asked to educate White colleagues or to yield 'grace and space' as they fumble and do harm in the process. Indeed, many White people want to change their behaviour, to have more nuanced conversations about racism, to reduce their own biases, but that work is hard, it's emotionally taxing and it's scary. Detecting Bias will use peer-reviewed research, personal stories and client examples to drive these points home.

Far from Eutopia
In 2020, after three and a half years of bitter negotiations, Britain left the European Union. For some it was a day of freedom, for others a tragedy which would leave Britain isolated and poorer. Vote Brexit, the Remain campaign warned us, and it would be an act of self-harm. The economy would collapse, sending prices and unemployment soaring. Meanwhile, in contrast to xenophobic, inward-looking Britain, the EU would soar ahead without us.But is that really what has happened? Ross Clark reveals just how badly the EU is doing - and how in many ways Britain is doing better. Since Brexit, for example, the UK economy has grown faster than Germany's. In spite of inflation which followed the pandemic and the invasion of Ukraine, Britain has the lowest food prices in Europe. The air is cleaner than in many countries. Despite recent events surveys suggest there is less racism and xenophobia in Britain than in almost any other European country. For years, European economies have been far more sluggish than those of other developed countries. In the absence of economic growth and with high migration, European societies are strained. The far right is advancing and public disillusionment with the EU growing quickly. While Britain shares many of Europe's problems to a greater or less extent, this hard-hitting polemic argues that it now has the means to disentangle itself from the EU's draw strings set off on a more prosperous path.

New Beginnings
The first book in beloved Amish novelist Linda Byler's Seekers series. As a young man growing up in an Amish family, Amos struggles to fit in. Slow in school, overweight, and afflicted with terrible acne, he feels he's a constant disappointment to his mother, sisters, teachers, and employers. Convinced that he will never be good enough for them, he leaves home and accepts a job as a live-in groundskeeper for an "English" (non-Amish) couple. Gradually, he moves toward a healthier, more confident version of himself. But he can't leave behind the fact that living as an English person--driving a pickup truck, sporting short hair and a flannel button-up shirt--is the greatest disappointment to his family yet. When Amos meets Skye, he's drawn to her refreshingly forthright mannerisms. With her camouflage baseball cap and love of the outdoors, she's fun and free in ways that only an English girl can be. And then there's Anna, a young Amish woman who is sweet and kind and unmistakably cute. In fact, she's special enough to make him wonder if he could go back to the Amish life to be with her. But how could he do that with any kind of sincerity, given he's not even sure he believes in God? Author Linda Byler is an active member of the Amish church and writes all her novels by hand with a pen and notebook. She offers a unique and fascinating look into Amish history and culture.

Chain
'Back in 2012, everyone knew who Bradley Wiggins was. Everyone, that is, but me. Thirteen years after the summer that defined me, I have finally defined myself. The disguises have gone. I've made peace with myself.' 'IT'S NOT A LIGHT READ BUT, BLIMEY, IT IS BRILLIANT' POLLY VERNON, THE TIMES Think you know Bradley Wiggins? Think again. Join Bradley Wiggins on a remarkable journey of self-discovery during which he faced his greatest ever opponent – the demons inside his head. He has cast aside his fragile shell and is the person he always wanted to be. Finally, he is happy in his own skin. He has broken the chain. Bradley Wiggins is the greatest British cyclist of his generation. A national hero on both track and road, he won five Olympic gold medals, eight world titles and the Tour de France. But his is a story mired in contradiction, controversy, and confusion. Sat on a throne after winning gold at London 2012, just ten days after becoming the first Briton to win the Tour de France, here was a man with the world at his feet. Sporting hero. People’s champion. Legend. Everyone knew who ‘Wiggo’ was. Everyone, that is, but him. Bradley’s own truth was one of a chaotic and disturbing upbringing characterised by abandonment and abuse. The bike had been his escape but he knew that the second he got out of the saddle he was a shadow-man with no self-belief and even less self-worth. With zero confidence in his value as a human being, attention was his worst nightmare. Bradley’s answer was to wear a mask. He became ‘Sir Wiggo’, the loveable rogue, the disguise slowly suffocating the real him, crushing the last few remnants of self-esteem. Bradley descended into a deep personal despair marked by drug addiction. It was his lowest point, and one which, he freely admits, could have resulted in his death. Bradley’s saviour has been himself. Incredibly he found the strength to embark on a remarkable journey of self-discovery during which he faced his greatest ever opponent – the demons inside his head. In so doing he reached an understanding of what and who he is. The result is this powerful memoir, The Chain. It is a journey he now wants to share. He wants others to understand they are not alone in their mental battles; that embracing honesty and openness is the key to personal happiness. Bradley Wiggins has cast aside his fragile shell. Now, as the person he always wanted to be, he has become an inspiration to us all. Forget the jerseys, the medals. Finally, Bradley Wiggins is who he is, in his own skin. He has broken the chain.

This Way Up

Whether you’re an avid map junkie or simply ‘map-curious’, you will uncover a unique tale of adventure, error and unexpected humour in each chapter, as we attempt to answer the question: ‘What on earth happened here?’ So, ditch the compass (or disable location services) and set out on a journey with us, the Map Men, into a world of cartographic chaos and mappy mishaps. Because the worst maps are the best maps.

Dream Work
Dream Work, a collection of forty-five poems originally published in 1986, follows both chronologically and logically Mary Oliver's American Primitive, which won her the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1983. The depth and diversity of perceptual awareness, so steadfast and radiant in American Primitive, continues in Dream Work. Additionally, she has turned her attention in these poems to the solitary and difficult labours of the spirit, to accepting the truth about one's personal world, and to valuing the triumphs while transcending the failures of human relationships.
